right before period, how much more chance of pregnancy?

How much of a difference does it make in the time of month for a girl. Like is the risk of pregnancy a hell of a lot higher right before her period (2days), or just a little bit higher.

The way i understand it, a woman is most fertile around 7-14 days after the START of her period, so if she starts, and bleeds for four days, you've got three more days that are "safer" than others, and the the days after day 14 as well. There's little chance of impregnating a woman just a few days before her period.

BUT - this isn't the 1950's teachings of the Catholic church. Get with it! You shouldn't be having unprotected sex anyways, unless you're intending to procreate or are prepared to deal with the consequences of an unplanned pregnancy.

I can only agree with this, don't have unprotected sex unless you really want to father some children.
This is what is going to happen if you have unprotected sex, one time or another.
Just dont do it

Here's the deal -- there are some general rules, like smithja0423 says. But everybody's different, and even every month can be different. Don't mess with it. Use protection.

Actually, it's 11 to 18 days, and sperm can live in the vagina for up to 5 days. (My wife is catholic, and we tried this for a while. She finally gave in and we use condoms now.) It can vary from woman to woman though. It can also change based on stress, diet, and a bunch of other things. They now make fertility monitors that are based on a lot of information gathering, day the period started, her temperture, etc. They run about $200. They are supposed to be pretty accurate though.

phew, ok. thanks guys.
we had a bit of a situation, she was on BC pill though, and we used the morning after pill about 38 hours later, then again 50hours later.
she bled some the week before, only a little bit, and we didnt think that was her period, but it might have been because she took the first morning-after pill on the day her usual period was supposed to start

Mtdewrock, please tell us about the situation? If you she was on birth control, why did she need to take the morning after pill?

The morning after pill is loaded (more or less) with the same hormones that are in regular BC pills. The reason birth control pills have a couple days worth of placebos at the end of the month is to let the hormone levels drop enough for women to get their periods. If you skip the placebos and go straight into the next months pills, most women won't get their periods. I bet that she was starting to get hers, and the huge hormone levels in the morning after pill (compared to regular BC pills) caused a little wierdness.

Also, I think the morning after pill(s) can be taken up to two days later, but I am not sure.

I'd be careful on the timing - as I remember women are most fertile 14 days BEFORE their next period - so for women with 'regular' cycles it's vaguely predictable as x days after their last period. However, if a woman has an irregular cycle you're not going to find it nearly so easy to guess!

Anyway, mtdewrock, you should be safe having sex during the pill free week (or placebo week) on a combined pill, so long as she starts taking the next packet on time. You only need to worry if she's not been taking the pills at the correct time, or has vomited/had severe diarrhoea/been taking a medication which interacts with it.

And in response to Greg700 - yes, the morning after pill can work up to 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. However, it becomes less and less reliable as the hours go by so if you need it, it's best to avoid any delay.

Shit, I knew this, but I forgot it. One of my closest friends knows a bunch about this. Tonight, when I talk with her, I'll see what she says about that.
