What now?
I'm more curious about the responses from the people who have disagreed with the war from the beginning. It seems as though the bulk of the discussion/arguments here continue to focus on the validity of the war. I would just like to start a thread that focuses on where we are now (not how or why we got here), and what the best course of action is.
My opinion (as if it will come much of a surprise to anyone that's read my posts), is that we should use any and all means at our disposal to get Iraq on it's feet (which I think requires much more public support), get this over with and get outta there in a reasonable amount of time. I think part of what made vietnam vietnam was the lack of public support, and therefore lack of government support for the people that were over there. It concerns me that this may happen in Iraq. I see this happening with members of the UN. Because they didn't agree with the war in the first place, nobody is offering support. It's undeniably in everyone's best interest the Iraq situation is resolved, and this would happen more quickly if the UN committed themselves to making this happen. Anyway, maybe not articulated in the best way possible cause I got a million things on my mind, just curious to see where this goes). |

I am one of "those people" who disagreed from the beginning, but I think it would be foolish to get out now. First we need the help of the world (read: the UN), but for the long-term we need to start getting the Iraqi people back on their own feet, in terms of a viable police force and rebuilding basic infrastructure. The focus should be on giving them a measure of security and then slowly letting them take more responsibility, until they are entirely independent.

I don't quite understand the "Kepp doing what were doing, focus on UN backing" option. Are you implying that focusing on UN backing is what we have been doing all along, or that we should keep doing what we've been doing, AS WELL as seek more UN aid?

I don't see how you go from having a lack of public support (I'm assuming you mean stateside) to making the mission harder in iraq or vietnam.
Now if you're talking about lack of public support in those countries, you're definitely on to something. Our mission in vietnam was made more difficult because we were propping up a corrupt dictator who's only good merit was that he was a capitalist. In Iraq we aren't getting public support for hundreds of different reasons, some good, some bullshit.

I think that we need to focus completely on getting Iraq moving. This includes reaching out to the world for help. If they don't want to, so be it. That is unfortunate, but not the end of the world. We have to stay the course on Iraq, and keep making progress. We need better intelligence in Iraq, and if need be more troops. The problem with bringing in fresh troops is that there may be even more accidents and/or deaths due to the inexperience. We have to be completely dedicated to this. Getting out now, would be the worst thing we could ever do for Iraq and the Middle East.
