On a more serious note, I really like this photograph. The atmosphere of it is perfect for the subject. Did you use a filter for this? The effect looks similar to something I saw in a movie that I'm too skiddish to use right now.

The technique involved taking vaseline and putting it on the lens then wiping it off in a circular motion with a soft tissue. The idea was to leave graduating amounts of vaseline as one worked towards the edge of the lens so there was virtually none in the center and just a bit on the outer edges. What was left gave a similar effect to what you've done here.

Interesting shot there, PJ. The colors are wild! Orange and green...quite..Halloweeny! The only salvation from the evilness are a few tiny spots of blue in the upper RH corner.

I'll have to scan meself some of my own graveyard shots and at least attempt to get some of that eerie air to them that you always get.

I got some similar photos a few years ago in black and white at an abandoned farm in North Georgia. Didn't know I was taking pictures of the slaughterhouse at the time. Quite interesting shadows. I got rid of the photos. Flagler College convinced me of the existence of ghosts. and I really, really don't like to piss them off.

Actually JJ, I did use a 'filter'. When I saw this scene I was wearing my sunglasses, through which I love the color casts it gives. I showed it to mrs. joe and she suggested trying to cover the lens of my Holga with my sunglasses. This was the result, although as jujueye pointed out, the field of view was a bit to wide for the sunglasses. Probably something I can doctor up in PS.


Yeah man, the thought of carrying that crap in the field and accidently getting it on more of my gear than I want to makes me shudder as well. Thankfully, there are diffused filters made now with a clear center spot that are much nicer to work with.

Joe... I'm surprised. You've never had an issue with putting Vaseline on your gear before... (I'm not even touching the "shudder" comment).



By the way... this is a great shot. Reminds me of a horror film from the 70s. Either it was the stock they used or the age of the print by the time it was screened on TV (they used to use 16mm prints instead of video tape for broadcasting films on TV).

What always amazes me is the amount of money people will spend on quality equipment (myself included) when very very inexpensive cameras like Paddy's Holga and your 110 can capture some very artistic images.
