Yeah man, the thought of carrying that crap in the field and accidently getting it on more of my gear than I want to makes me shudder as well. Thankfully, there are diffused filters made now with a clear center spot that are much nicer to work with.

I'm almost considering trying this on one of my old lenses that I never use anymore, just to see what will happen.
