baby gas!
Hi all, well my little girl is now a wopping 16 days old and have we have started to notice a trend with her. She tends to fuss and cry lot after breastfeeding sessions. She seems to be having gas pains (from my non-medical guess) after she farts or pushes out some poops she seems fine. Not everytime does she do this little fuss but it does happen quite often, and not every time does she poop but does fart several times. Her fussing seems to stop after her little butt explosions, so it looks to be gas as the issue. We tried changing breastfeeding positions and burping, as remedies. Anyone tried any gas relief products like gripe water or others that you have positive/negative opinions about? thanks for any help or your horror stories! cheero brian

Quick suggestion- it's possibly what mom eats. My daughter got cranky when I ate bananas, and acted picky about the taste of my milk when I ate broccoli.
My nephew who was born a month ago is lactose intolerant. When mom drinks any cow's milk he gets gassy. Have mom watch closely what foods she eats. If she has milk regularly, have her cut milk out for a couple days. Be sure she takes a vitamin suppliment because of course you don't want to deprive her of much needed calcium. But what mom eats is what baby eats. My daughter always got hiccups in the womb when I ate pineapple. My family has a lot of different food allergies and the first thing that came to my mind is to watch what mom eats and see if you can find a correlation. My sister-in-law has stopped breastfeeding thinking that the baby was allergic to breastmilk. She has now discovered that she has had to switch to a special soy formula that is extremely expensive and they still haven't figured out what's causing the gas. She wishes she hasn't let herself dry up and just eliminated foods from her diet. I gave a brief allergy elimination diet here. If you follow this you should find out what's bothering him pretty quickly if it's allergies or food intolerances.

thank you for the advice, my wife and I don't have any food allergies ourselves but now that gets me wondering if our baby might. my wife is going to write down what she eats and see if we can take one thing out at a time. We have been watching what she eats the entire pregnancy and still with her breastfeeding, but it makes me think that milk should be the first thing we should try as its the most common. thanks again!

If you don't hit the nail on the head right away, a quick way to help her release the gas is to gently bicycle her legs or push her knees to her tummy. Other than that, the above have said it all. Good luck and hang in there.

....we've had a lot of luck (7 week old, right now) with burping him when he's on my wife's shoulder, rather than while he's sitting. Sounds like you daughter's got some pretty routine feeding/gas issues. She'll learn when she needs to burp, too, and let you know in one way or another. Best of luck!

Right, where to begin.......
Our daughter suffered with gas and mild colic, so we've been through the mill with regards to potential solutions. This is what worked best for us. You can get an OTC medication that you give the baby before they start to feed that can help them 'release' during and afterwards (you should always burp during the feed rather than waiting til afterwards anyway). It's better for babies who are bottle fed as it can be added to the bottle and is easier for the baby to take, although I can't for the life of me remember the brand name of the one that we used (Disflatyl is another one that works well though). Whatever it was, it was absolutely brilliant. My daughter never suffered from wind again while we were using it. Generally, however, breastfed babies are less lilkely to suffer from colic and trapped wind than bottle fed babies. Also, if you are feeding from the bottle, keeping the baby as upright as possible while ensuring that the teat is always filled with milk can lessen the amount of air swallowed. When breastfeeding, be careful what your wife eats as this may also cause gas. I hear that eating spicy foods increases the instances of trapped wind in breastfeeding babies. As she got older, I also found that raising her arms above her head helped her burp (it works for me too). Gripe water is also good, and can ge used to prevent and cure colic and trapped wind. You should always have some on standby. However, when we were in the States, we couldn't find any anywhere. |

Our son SCREAMED nightly, from 5 to 8:30. Every night. At the top of his lungs. Welcome to colic. Lasted three months, and then suddenly stopped. |

thanks for idea's, the burping really is the key to our little girls tummy pain. she's now about 7 weeks old and we have some what limited the gas, with improved feeding positions and burping techniques. getting more pressure on her stomach and using gripe water 2-3 times a week helps. she's doing great, getting so big so quick makes me sad and happy at the same time. thanks again!

If you switch to formula at some point you are likely to experience the same thing. We ended up using exclusively Enfamil because Similiac constipated our daughter terribly. Could be the reverse for your child. It's about figuring out what their body can/can't tolerate

I know some of you are going to balk at this idea, but take her to the chiropracter. I took my son to the same chiropracter that adjusted me when I was a baby. By mom took me for colic type stuff and we took our little guy in for the same thing. The chiropacter did it for free, and he stopped with the colic in a week. Seems the birth canal just is not conducive to keeping a spine in line. I was real skeptical at first but just a few adjustments and no more colic. I would suggest you find a chiropracter you trust first. The guy we went to had been in business over 25 years and was part of the SF 49ers training staff for a while. I remember going with my mom and seeing Joe Montana, Roger Craig and the like while I was in the waiting room! I went back to him to get adjusted and asked he asked how everything was going. I told him that I had a baby now and he was very colic'y. He told me to bring him in. I was kind of shocked, talked to my mom and wife about it. That when my mom told me she took me and my little brother in for different things when we were babies. I had colic and my brother had the runs pretty bad. The doctors didn't seem to be able to do anything for either of us, and the chiropracter did.

Hard8s - doesn't it just break your heart at how many people think evil of you for taking your baby to the chiropracter?
My ex-husband and I used to get into the worst fights over that one, and he just couldn't bring himself to admit that it helped immensely. My youngest has been going to the chiropracter since she was two weeks old, and there was a marked improvement in her entire disposition. She even gave her first smile to the chiropracter
