Let's make a PUNK CD
Alright people. I need your help.
I want to make a good punk cd, one that's gonna be fast and hard, the truest, best representation of good punk music. So far I'm considering a lot of stuff from Rancid to Lagwagon, but I'd also like to have some older shit on there like Dead Kennedy's, Ramones, Sex Pistols, stuff that I don't necessarily know a lot about having been born long after this shit was published. So far I know I want to put: Cretin Hop by the Ramones Born to Lose by the Bouncing Souls If we get enough suggestions, I might even make a couple volumes, so HIT ME!

Sweet, replies already!
Depression makes the list! Some nice hard punk, exactly what I was looking for. Holiday in the Sun, good choice it's on, the cd obviously needs some Sex Pistols, but I couldn't throw anything trendy on there. What do you guys think about "Buzzbomb" by the Dead Kennedy's? thanks for the responses!

All - "World's on Heroin" is always a great opener and "Last Caress" by the Misfits is always a great ender to any punk mix.

armstrong is in a band called the transplants, with the drummer from Blink 182 and another guy,( i forgot his name). I at least know that much...
for songs to put on a cd... have you thought about the clash? and NOFX (isn't as old as the Ramones but, they're still awesome.)!

Rancid is sort of second wave, admittedly the bouncing souls and nofx and those other bands are too, so I'd like to save their involvement for the second cd, or like I said, if we can't get enough old school punk to fill the first one. Bloodclot is a great song. I mean, let's face it, pretty much everything by Rancid is fucking great. Out Come the Wolves was (and still is) my favorite cd of all time. I guess my real problem with Rancid is which song do you pick? I mean, how about Salvation, but if we're gonna go there, then why not St. Mary, or Avenues and Alleyways, or even Maxwell Murders. And if we're into Rancid, then what about Op Ivy, there's no way I can keep Smiling, Knowledge, Unity or Here We Go Again off the list. So Rancid just sort of opens up the metaphorical can of worms you know? EDIT Actually I'm listening to Bloodclot right now, it's been awhile, and it's exactly the kind of song we're looking for. Totally high energy! Good pick, it's definitely on. EDIT As far as the Transplants go, they're cool, but (and maybe I'm a punk snob) but their sound, although punk, is really different from anything else we've been talking about. I hope I don't kill this whole idea by being a snob, it would just be great if we could get some old school shit on here, and unfortunately, I'm not old enough to remember enough of this to fill it by myself, it might be a problem that there aren't many around that are. Oh, and I think All "The World's on Heroin" is a great choice, that's definitely on, I haven't heard the Misfits song you're talking about, D/Ling now, but I definitely think the Misfits belong, I considered "Where Eagles Dare" but will wait to see "Last Caress".

Hey man, you're not being a snob, you're just trying to make a very specific type of mix. A noble endeavor in my opinion. And while there maybe aren't many people who were down with the Clash in 1977 reading this thread, the music is still out there, you know...
Speaking of which, if you've got the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, you gotta have the Clash. I've already put in more than my two cents worth, so I'll let someone else suggest which old Clash song. |

The Bouncing Souls did an awesome cover of Anti Flag's "That's Youth"... in my opinion they did it better and with WAY more feeling than Justin Sane and AF ever did, though seeing both bands on stage singing that song together as one band was one of the best things I've ever seen. Descendents' one song called Hateful Notebook was pretty decent, one of the gems from Everything Sucks. "Scarred by Love" by the nobodys is good also, and it has the lead singer from the Queers doing vocals on it. Rancid's "Hyena" was always one of my favorites, along with "Urban Struggle" by The Vandals. If i can think of any more i'll post, and i'll pick my g/f's brain about the DK's, since she has nearly all of their albums... also, post a track list when youre finished, id be interested in making a comp like this for myself.

If you're going to do a punk CD, you NEED to have some Minor Threat on there. I'd recommend "Bottled Violence" or the song "Minor Threat". As an aside, an ex-girlfriend had no idea of punk, so I made her a punk sampler CD. The rules for it? No using a band more than once, and no more than 15 tracks. Here's what I put on it.
1. The Ramones - We're a Happy Family 2. Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen 3. The Descendents - Original Me 4. Bad Brains - Banned in D.C. 5. Minor Threat - Minor Threat 6. Bad Religion - Leaders & Followers 7. Operation Ivy - The Crowd 8. Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles 9. Rancid - Roots Radicals 10. Pennywise - Unknown Road 11. Dropkick Murphys - Caps & Bottles 12. The Offspring - Dirty Magic 13. AFI - No Poetic Device 14. NOFX - Murder the Government 15. Propaghandi - Nailing Descartes to the Wall And a quick note on modern punk bands: if you ever need to analyze them, almost every punk band, at its core, just wants to imitate their idols. Don't believe me? Lars Frederiksen of Rancid has been quoted on numerous occasions as saying that he always wanted to be Joe Strummer when he grew up. The Offspring idolized Social Distortion. AFI is simply The Cure taken to the next logical level. Propaghandi is Bad Religion for the new millennium, and every pop punk band (who I despise) wants to be NOFX in the worst possible way. Anyway, above are some of my submissions for your punk CD. Notable by their absence are the Bouncing Souls, the Vandals, Agnostic Front, H2O, and the Clash. While all these bands are punk as fuck (The Clash not so much, but that's neither her nor there) I feel these tracks make up a damn good punk comp, and argue the strongest case for punk rock. I'd definitely give these songs a listen for your comp. Oh, and if you're going to use Rancid, there's about half a dozen better and more punk songs of theirs than Bloodclot. Listen to the following songs with your whole head: "Avenues and Alleyways", "7 Years Down," "Journey to the End of East Bay", "Let's Go", "Junkie Man", and "The War's End". I'd use either No Control or I Want to Conquer the World from Bad Religion.
Also What the Fuck by Crass, Lexicon Devil by the Germs, Johnny's Got a Problem (D.I.), Hatebreeder by the Misfits, and Soup is Good Food from DK.

Okay, I'm gonna update and post a new version of the list tonight. I didn't realize this had gotten so many replies. As for now I'm going bowling. Thanks for the input guys, I'll sort this out and see what we have.

Okay, so I'm posting what we have so far, some are locked and some are disputed, so I'll separate them out. This isn't the order the final list will be in. As for the order, I would suggest chronological, I think it will sound more interesting.
01. Cretin Hop - Ramones 02. World's on Heroin - All 03. Born to Lose - Bouncing Souls (possibly disputed) 04. Depression - Black Flag 05. Holiday in the Sun - Sex Pistols 06. Buzzbomb - the Dead Kennedy's (this can change, anything but California, I'm just so tired of that one) 07. Everybody's Girl - Dwarves 08. Unknown Road - Pennywise 09. The Gauntlet - Dropkick Murphy's (Fortunes of War?) 10. 1969 - The Stooges (I'll put it on if we can't find anything better) 11. Urban Struggle - The Vandals 12. Hateful Notebook - The Descendants (can I use them and ALL and not break the rules?) 13. Bottled Violence - Minor Threat Disputed Generator, No Control, I Want to Conquer the World by Bad Religion Bloodclot and just about anything else by Rancid (this is gonna be the hardest one, I like Bloodclot, because it's got the beat and tempo, but it sounds kind of 'produced' compared to the other stuff on the album') Green Hell, Last Caress, Where Eagles Dare, and others by the Misfits Murder the Government, Linoleum, Liza and Lousie, Stickin' in My Eye by Nofx I can't find Telepath boy, also looking for an Anti-Flag suggestion, as well as Choking Victim and Leftover Crack. I wouldn't mind someone picking a better Stooges song too. Also need Agnostic Front and h2O as Heel Turn suggested. Anyway, we're almost there, just a few more to go. Fuck, I forgot about Op Ivy. The Crowd was suggested, anything else?

If youre looking for an Anti Flag suggestion, go with "Thats Youth" or maybe "Captain Anarchy." Of your choices for a NOFX song, id have to say "Stickin' in My Eye" or go with "El Lay."

Those are some good suggestions, unfortunately I have to go to work.
What I mean by truest is, I want older stuff, first and second wave, and none of this pop shit. Like no offense to the Nofx people, but to me that borders on the edge of being too pop for punk, voices always seem to high to me, and don't get me started on Jello (he's just lucky the rest of the band kicks so much ass). I personally would prefer something with a harder edge, which is why we might want to do two cds, an old school punk cd, and a new school where there's more room to play.
