I don't see how anyone could think of NOFX as pop, seeing as how they go out of their way to avoid the MTV crowd. They don't make music videos for new releases and they don't allow MTV to play their older videos. Just my two cents. |

You're right Bob, Nofx isn't pop, I don't know why I'm so biased against them.
Anyway they definitely deserve the label "punk"

This all depends on whether you are trying to make a CD that is punk by sound or punk by ideaology.
Punk by sound included bands such as the Vandals, Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon, AFI, etc. Punk by ideaology, (Which is punk that is punk because of it's lyrical content and message), would still include Bad Religion and old (YES OLD) NoFX, but would also include the RX Bandits, Propagandhi, Sage Francis (yes, he's a rapper, but his lyrics match up to those of BR), BigWig (I'm surprised nobody has mentioned them before) and Bob Dylan. These were bands/people that are punk in their want for the reform of society to make a better whole for us all. Punk isn't about power chords and a fast beat, it's about a message that was originally delivered by people who had no other way to convey it but through music. So, my friend, I ask you, which punk are you trying to make a mix of? |

RatherThanWords,
first and foremost punk by sound. I'm all about the a-chord, fast beats, and energy. You have an excellent point, unfortunately Phil Ochs doesn't get a spot on this cd. ;-) The rest of you. 01. Cretin Hop - Ramones 02. World's on Heroin - All 03. Born to Lose - Bouncing Souls (possibly disputed) 04. Depression - Black Flag 05. Holiday in the Sun - Sex Pistols 06. Buzzbomb - the Dead Kennedy's (this can change, anything but California, I'm just so tired of that one) 07. Everybody's Girl - Dwarves 08. Unknown Road - Pennywise 09. The Gauntlet - Dropkick Murphy's (Skinhead on the MBTA as a closer?) 10. Search and Destroy- The Stooges 11. Urban Struggle - The Vandals 12. Hateful Notebook - The Descendants (can I use them and ALL and not break the rules?) 13. Bottled Violence - Minor Threat 14. Institutionalized - Suicidal Tendencies 15. I was wrong - Social Distortion 16. Beat the Bastards - The Exploited 17. I don't care about you - Fear 18. Life and Limb - Fugazi 19. Yellin in my Ear - Operation Ivy (love that song) 20. No Control - Bad Religion 21. Linoleum - Nofx 22. What Do I Get? - Buzzcocks (can I use this song if they sold it to a volkswagen commercial?) You want fries with that? Seriously, am I missing anything? I'm trying to find a way to host this somewhere, but until then, Kazaa seems to work nicely. I've been working my ass off, so I'm gonna sit down and watch Adaptation. Have fun kids.

RatherThanWords,
That's a good list, a few of those I don't have on cd, and am downloading. Thanks for your input. I kind of gave up on the whole punk cd after I made my original one. I gave one away, and this girl claimed to like it, but I had the feeling she didn't listen to any of it. Anyways it gave me the feeling that maybe the most useful part of this thread, is for people who like punk, to explore some new stuff, and that's what I've been doing with all your posts. So those of you who have something to add, I'll be sure to check in and download some stuff, it's not like anyone advertises good punk, the only way to spread the news is by word of mouth. And for those of you reading this thread who haven't ever heard any punk, download some of this stuff at random, if you don't like it, so sorry, but if you do, get on this board and we can all explore some shit together. Thanks to everyone who has posted. peace, Skettios.

Old School Punk
Suprized Subhumans (British not Canadian) hasn't been mentioned - "Religious Wars" was a favorite. Maybe too political?
Remember Anarchy 6? - "Slam Spit Cut Your Hair Kill Your Mom" - almost a joke album in the same vein for punk like Crucial Youth was for Straightedge. Last note.... The was a band Day Glow Abortions - "Addicted to Suicide" now that was straight out '86 punk Anyways...all true punk classics, the songs still remain beyond the band |
