Surf, Ska, Oi!
I really want to find more bands of the mentioned genres. Got any recommendations?
Surf music: I like stuff that sort of has an edge, if you know what I mean. I'm not talkin about anything like the Beach Boys, but there's this one band called the Aqua Velvets that's pretty snazzy. Ska: This one is tricky, cause I don't really know what it is that I like. Horns aren't required for it to be good... Bands I do like include Citizen Fish and Op Ivy. Smart lyrics. Those are important. Oi: This one's also a little tough. I like the Templars... BeerZone is good too. What else is out there? I guess it's good when the vocals are rough. Or something. Ok, thanks for reading.

if you really want to hear ska, look for bands like
Lee 'Scratch' Perry Max Romeo and the Upsetters the specials Desmond Dekker there was a pretty hot ska scene in boston in the late 1980's too. probably the most famous band to come out of there was the mighty mighty bosstones but bim ska la bim and plate o shrimp are pretty good too.

Thanks for... contributing... but I don't think any of those bands fit into the catagories. Gads, I think I'm about to give up on surf music though. I don't even wanna deal with the Ventures, who recorded about 7 billion records, and it's so hard to find other stuff. I'm beginning to think the genre is more of a novelty than anything else. [edit: Oh, uh, your post is... gone...]

Define "surf music" for me? The one band that personifies the lifestyle and audience down here in Oz is early Midnight Oil....the 'Head Injuries' album from 1979 is an Australian classic. Peter Garrett surfed his ass off, sang about a surfer's way of life (that's before he, errmmm, became a federal politician recently)...so if that's not "surf music", I dunno what is!
When it comes to ska, I'm a bit of a Two-Tone fan...Madness, Selector, the Beat and the Specials tugged my chain. Australia had a couple of great ska bands in the late 80's called The Strange Tenants and No Nonsense; the latter supported Madness in a total riot of a gig way back when. Good times....

I'm new around here, but not to be rude... but if came from califorina it ain't ska Alot of bands mentioned aren't ska bands at all. Sublime? Rancid?
Ska - my favorite 3 ska albums: The Toasters - Dub'56 The Pietasters - Strapped Live Mephiskapheles - God Bless Satan Surf - PUT IN THE TIME TO FIND GOOD SURF!!!!!! I know exactly what you mean, the beach boys and jan and dean suck balls. The Lively Ones, The Apemen, Trashmen, Trashwoman, Mummies, Los Straitjackets, Laika & The Cosmonauts, Dick Dale, Tiki Tiki Bamoooos, and 50% of Agent Orange is surf. Oi - is a tough one, just cause the line blurs between it and punk and good ol'barroom rock'n'roll. Niblick Henbane, The Wretched Ones, the Buissness, Cock Sparrer, Roger Miret and the Disasters, Sham'69, Cockney Rejects, Blitz are a good start. |

My favorite Ska song/band hasn't been listed, suprisingly: Fishbone - Party At Ground Zero.
Another vote for Madness, the Beat, General Public and the Specials. Some are more Mod than Ska, but close enough. |

Surf:
Man or Astroman - Buy "Made From Technicium" immediately. Seriously. Stop reading this thread. Guy buy it, Put it on, then come back and finish reading this. Satan's Pilgrims The Monomen The Cramps (old stuff) - You know, I don't know that you could call this music "surf" per se, but it has a real surfy feel to it. Buy "Bad Music for Bad People" Ska Reel Big Fish "Turn the Radio Off" - all their other stuff is sucky, yet this CD is great Scofflaws - These guys are oh, so good OLD Fishbone Sublime

This is a bit of a deviation from the present conversation, but I've never really thought of Sublime as ska. Listen to Voo Doo Glow Skulls and Catch 22 and Reel Big Fish and put that next to Sublime. Doesn't really match up to me. Sublime has always had a unique texture to it that defies any general category that I can come up with but I certainly wouldn't call it ska.

How about the SKAtalites? Ok so the lyrics aren't so smart, but its good original ska. The Slackers have some good ska/reggae stuff, and Skavoovie and the Epitones was a fantastic new wave group but in an original style. I second the Toasters and Specials votes as well.
As a last point, I wouldn't really call Operation Ivy ska in and of itself. Ska influenced punk? Sure, but an upbeat chord on the guitar does not make ska music. |
