Define "surf music" for me? The one band that personifies the lifestyle and audience down here in Oz is early Midnight Oil....the 'Head Injuries' album from 1979 is an Australian classic. Peter Garrett surfed his ass off, sang about a surfer's way of life (that's before he, errmmm, became a federal politician recently)...so if that's not "surf music", I dunno what is!
When it comes to ska, I'm a bit of a Two-Tone fan...Madness, Selector, the Beat and the Specials tugged my chain. Australia had a couple of great ska bands in the late 80's called The Strange Tenants and No Nonsense; the latter supported Madness in a total riot of a gig way back when. Good times....
