Take the word "dead" and think of all the rhyming words. Thread, head, ...dead. Yeah, now you know the lyrics from the first 30 seconds of one of her songs.
Her crap makes me long for better crap like Kelly Clarkson and {fill in the blank with another forgettable female pop idol}.

I feel your pain. I feel as you do especially with regards to Nirvana and the Tragically Hip, and all the bands like Blink 182 that play all their songs on the top 3 strings of their guitars.

The pseudo-irony of your last comment is that she actually wrote for Kelly Clarkson.

Also, rhyming is considered a central part of a lot of poetry, and by extension, music.

OFKUO: By top 3 strings are you talking the three that are physically on top, or the 3 highest strings? I should know this, but I haven't learned anything technical about guitar in years.

Does anybody else see that she is the Alanis Morissette of this decade??? Reading the above just made me realize it. Madonna, Morissette, Lavigne. They're all the same. They are pop icons that make recordings, not neccessarily musicians, but all the same.

Alanis Morissette wrote all her own stuff. Morissette's stuff was more mature, better song-writing.

I like Lavigne, but she's no Morissette.

Suave, everyone says it differently but the 3 strings I refer to on top are the E, A and D strings. The ones closest to your thumb,... unless you play like Steve Vai.

Hmm, in defense of Avril once again I am, lol. There is nothing wrong with Avril Lavigne. A lot of you speak about her as if she's the antichrist of music or something. She isn't that bad, there are a hell of a lot of singers and bands out there that are a lot worse than she is. Avril isn't that bad at all. And as far as whoever made the comment about Nirvana's guitar playing - if I'm not mistaken, Kurt Cobain wasn't well known for brilliant guitar playing.

What I am protesting about is how we seem to be forced to like all these crappy bands and singers simply because that is who is being pushed by the industry. Ashlee Simpson for christs sake. She repeatedly F's up at every venue she "sings" and is STILL PLAYED on the radio.

Ah okay. The low strings. I should have guessed from the bands you named, but one can never be sure. And yeah, Steve Vai is a crazy mofo.

And there is a solution for this, simple one, really -- Don't listen to the radio or watch mainstream music tv. Nobody is holding you at gunpoint and making you listen to these bands and singers that you hate so much.

Actually the reason she's STILL PLAYED on the radio is because the radio is payed to play her music by her label. Dj's are bought out too they're told what to spin. All of them sold out. MTV as well they're given a video then payed to give it a certain ammount of rotation on T.V.

Payola? Isn't that illegal?

Actually what get's played, is by demand. That's how radio, MTV, ..etc, works. Don't blame people doing their jobs who probably hate the shit they have to listen to, and spin. It's the advertisers that capitalize on the target market share that pay the piper, so to speak.

Downward spiral,
Good advise, but I wake up in the morning to the radio, and here in KY it is either country or this. And it is impossible to love every some on the radio. I play Sirius at work and you can count on hearing some Avril or Ashlee sometime during the day.

And my REAL point is that these people are so obviously talentless, what the F are they still doing on the charts? Milli Vanilli were publicly castrated for their sins, but Ashlee has a SHOW NOW!

Don't listen to the radio then, get a CD player or something and play whatever. And as far as why they are on the charts, people, as hard as it may be to believe, do like these performers, and listen to them. I thought Ashlee's show came before the album also, lol, am I mistaken?

That's what I do, most of the time. Problem is, I can't pick the radio station at my summer job...

However, most of these pop artists have one or two listenable tunes, and I would never buy any of their CD's with prices these days.

But..I just can't get enough of Avril. I love every single one of her songs; I own both cd's and even have a picture of her as my computer wallpaper. Mind you, I think the whole Sk8rrr rock punk ass girl routine is stupid and tired, and her songs are blatently emo and for the most part, pretty much the same.

Nonetheless..I just can't get enough.

thought I should share my obsession with someone
I'm sorry but Avril is So NOT punk...she's not even really skater anymore...you know what? Come on over to my dot on the map and listen to our radio stations and watch the MTV over here...she's played WAY too much here.
