This will be the first CD purchase in over a year for me. Perfect Circle just plain kicks ass. I'm actually excited for the new CD.

I will probably be going against the tide here, but I really didn't like it. I found it to sound like an album full of Tool filler. Granted, it's better than a lot of stuff being released, but for a Maynard album, it was a let down.

I have a policy against downloading songs of bands I love before the album is released, so I'm gonna wait to buy the CD. The waiting is almost unbearable though.

I personally like Mer De Noms better, the new one as people said here sounds alot like Tool, so be prepaired.

Not that I am saying Tool is bad, I love Maynard, but.. this doesn't sound alot like APC

I was a tool fan before I was an APC fan. But yes I do love both. And Thirteenth Step is very nice. I only wish I could purchase it direct from them. I will be buying it the day it comes out.

It's not a Maynard album. Its an A Perfect Circle album. Tool and APC are 2 completely different bands. I quite like the album and will buy it as soon at it's released.

I just downloaded it (don't worry, I'll be buying it as soon as it comes out, but I just can't wait that long!) and I love it. The vocals in The Package are incredible.

After listening the the album a few times over, I hate to say it, but I'm sort of disappointed. There are some great songs, I especially like The Package, Blue, and Pet, however, most of the other songs strike me as bland and uninteresting. I'm really hoping that it grows on me, because I'm pretty sure I didn't like Mer de Noms much the first few times I heard it... but now I think it's one of the best CDs I own - hopefully the same happens with Thirteenth Step.

Also, TS seems like a headphones kind of CD, and I have yet to listen to it with anything except my 5.1 Klipsch system, so I'm losing a lot of the softer sounding elements that seem to have a strong presence throughout the album.

absolutely an amazing album. havent stopped listening to it since i got it. freaking amazing. i had my doubts with them being able to pull off something better than mer de noms, how i was wrong. this is utterly brilliant!

twiggy - had my doubts about him, he blew me away
iha - there was never any doubt he'd be perfect for the band.

rock on a perfect circle!

I love the CD. it's MUCH different then Mer de Noms. but if you didn't think that then you didn't hear the story behind MER. Billy Howedel wrote/composed most of the songs before APC was a group. then one day Maynard went in there and made them work. Billy even stated that maynard sang to songs he never thought fit vocals. So i think what 13th step is. is the band actually comming together to write the songs together. Which is some really dark and romantic material in Maynards. It is very reminescent of a tool album, but it doesn't have the same tool edge and obscureness. NONETHELESS...i havn't been in the mood to listen to anything else. (the nurse that loved me reminds me of that song at the end of opiate ... "i had a friend once he took some acid..." just a thought.)

I saw it in the stores today, copy protection that makes it so you can't play it on OS's higher than Win95. That sucks, I listen to all my music on the PC pretty much, then again I guess I could just use the vivid trick. WIll probably pick it up later this week.

APC

APC as in "A Perfect Circle," not the battery-backup company.

Being the courteous kind of guy I am (and I'm not; that was a blatant lie), I thought I'd let you all know that the new APC album, Thirteenth Step , is amazing.
It's very different from Mer de Noms conceptually. I'm not much into the wine-lingo, so I can't say "It has a mildly precocious taste" and have any idea what i'm talking about, so bear with me.

It's easy to see the transition from, say, "Brena," "Thomas," or "Rose" to "The Noose," "A Stranger," and "Gravity."
The melody remains slower and deeper, while transitions from one rift to the next prohibit any real use of bridges and repetitive choruses.
It's also got a few more caustic tracks, like "Weak and Powerless," and "Pet." I'd say they've become more contemplative, but by no means weaker.

Anywhoo, buy it. DL it if you must, but the CD's only $10 at Best Buy, so let the band see 15 cents or so, a gold record or two, and give 'em a reason to make more music.

In fact, that thread was a promontional. You'll note that the thread creator encouraged readers/TFPers to buy it.
If you take the time to read my thread, and not just the last few sentences at the end, you'll recognize that I gave a short-and-sweet review of it. I noted some of the song titles, and compared them to older songs; I also discussed the melodic transitions from older songs to newer ones.

But thanks for your input.

stldickie, they get no radio play 'round here. There's a pointed lack of good radio stations in the Roanoke Valley area, so when hitting the "seek" button, it's a toss-up between country, oldies, and hip-hop. It's quite disappointing.

Well, I bought it today. Waited for the release and got it. Its a good album, and I must say it is different and not what I expected.

I think "The Noose" could be one of the best songs by APC.

I have to say I was slightly let down with this new album after the first few cycles of hearings. The Package, Noose, Blue, Stranger and Weak and Powerless were the only ones that really stood out of the 12 tracks. I was expecting some of that classic APC style dark acoustic guitar but it was only in 1 track as opposed to most in Mer De Noms, this was the main reason why I was let down since I love that sound.

The sound has completely changed because they swapped bassists and 2nd guitarists with other bands. Twiggy improves their sound greatly with his style but there is diffinetly something lacking in the guitar work since Troy left.

I am not saying this isn't a good album, it's great. But I don't think it was as good as Mer De Noms, it's hard to top that. And APC is NOT Maynards band, Billy Howerdel started the band and does most of the composition and recording. Billy is the mastermind behind APC, Maynard comes in later and adds lyrics and of course gets credit. APC is really nothing like tool except for Maynard and drop D chords.

Twiggy had nothing to do with this cd. Nor did lohner or anyone else. the band was still the original line up when recorded. If it says different in the liner notes...well i don't know. but the original news when the cd was completed was that Paz and Troy took part in the tracking.

I was kind of blown away by the mellowness of this album, where as Mer De Noms was romantic, angsty and dramatic, Thirteeth Step gives off a quieter, happier tune. It was almost like APC was able to go into the studio and come out mostly reinvented.

In my opinion the best tracks on the album are Weak and Powerless, The Noose, A Nurse Who Loved Me, Pet, and The Outsider. Some tracks come off to me as just filler...crime and lullaby being two of them.

If you are any kind of APC fan and you're not loving this album already, I'm ready to guarantee you'll be addicted by the third time through.

And on a negative note, if you live in Canada or parts of Europe, this CD also has copyright protection. It is not playable in MP3 diskplayers, computers, and some home stereos. Good job APC.

The CDs selling in America are fine. It's just the one's selling in Europe/Canada that are copy-protected. And its not the fault of APC. They have no control over that. It's the fault of their distributor over there, EMI.

It's great! I love it! Some tracks make me think of Tool, but I know better. As for the copy protection, I too, was able to rip to mp3 with no problem. There is, however, a disclaimer telling you not to rip the album and distribute it on the net.

Yeh you should really look at the liner notes.

Danny [Lohner] did the guitars on The Noose as well as "additional production" on The Noose, A Stranger, Nurse and Pet.

Troy did the guitars for some songs (Package, Vanishing, Gravity), while I'm pretty sure Twiggy [Jeordie] did the bass for the entire album (as well as backing vocals on Pet), as the only part that credits Paz with anything is co-writing Gravity (along with Troy).

damn i really must visit more boards.

so many comments. Yes, Nurse heavily reminded me of the end of 'Opiate'.

TTS is a wonderful CD, albeit not flawless.

i haven't read any buzz or 'news' on it yet, but if it like the first APC CD, Maynard gets a bit too much credit. it hurts meto say that it's true, though.

it has a slight Toolish sound but not much. and MDM sounded nothing like TOOL besides vocally.

i bought this and the deftones this year. both are great, but a little redundant.

so... the best cd so far this year? from what i've heard, yes. best CD they could had done? no.

oh and not one heavy or sexually charged song

Well, the CD has grown on me after about the 4-5th time through. I enjoy about 5-6 of the songs now. I agree with someone above who stated that a few of the songs sound like they were thrown in for filler. It seems that they kind of ran out of stuff and wanted to make sure it showed 12 tracks.

Other than that, it is a great CD. Best of the year? I dunno, but I like it.
