Do tape mixes "feel" different than CD mixes?
I first bought a CD-R drive in 1999, and while I've made tons of CD mixes for myself and people since then, something doesn't feel right about it.
It just feels different from when I would cue up my tapes, listening to the last note of the first song to see how it joined with the first note of the second song, figuring out how many songs could fit on a 30 minute or 45 minute side, and then writing them all out on the tape cover... Somehow some joy has been lost for me in the transfer to digital. Now all I have to do is start a playlist in iTunes and just click and drag. Before I had a CD-R drive, I would make tape mixes and think about how much easier it would be to do it on the computer, and - more importantly - how much BETTER the sound would be. But maybe there was a bit of charm in the fact that not all the songs were at the same volume (although it drove me nuts at the time). Has anybody else experienced this? |

I see waht you mean quadro, thing is Cd's are a whole lot easier. When your finished your mix record it onto tape. Then you have the best of both worlds, The ease of Cd's & the retroness of tapes.

Yeah, but then I wouldn't have the sound quality...and apart from that, I got RID of my cassette deck!

The other part too is the linearity of making the mix tape. If you wanted to insert or change your order you could potentially have to start over.
It was also a good thing to do when visiting friends you'd peruse their CD collection, then start taping and chatting. It could also be a majority of the "thing to do" while visiting because of the time it would take in planning and executing. Now I went to my buddies and we ripped like 10 albums in 45 minutes... that would have taken us a good evening back in the old analog days.

Wow, Cyn, way to resurrect a thread!
I used to do things like that with a few friends, Cyn - put things onto tape and then talk and stuff while doing it. It's interesting that you brought this back up when you did. This past weekend, Quadrette and I did a road trip. We had the iPod with us, as always. But we also brought two cassette mixes that I had made for her back in the day. Most of the songs on those cassettes were on the iPod. But there was something about the tape hiss, the order of the songs, the way they flowed....we sang at the top of our lungs and really got nostalgic about way back when. What the hell is it about that damn cassette??
