The other part too is the linearity of making the mix tape. If you wanted to insert or change your order you could potentially have to start over.
It was also a good thing to do when visiting friends you'd peruse their CD collection, then start taping and chatting. It could also be a majority of the "thing to do" while visiting because of the time it would take in planning and executing.
Now I went to my buddies and we ripped like 10 albums in 45 minutes... that would have taken us a good evening back in the old analog days.
