I'm a huge fan of both personally. I basically started DJing because of DJ Shadow and others like him, but as I progressed, I became fascinated with groups melding live jazz, downtempo and electronica, like Thievery Corporation and Zero 7. I think the review is talking specifically to people who only follow one genre of techno. I, on the other hand, follow many.

I am a big fan of both DJ Shadow and Thievery Corporation, but can't understand why someone would claim that a dislike for one would mean appreciation of the other. Doesn't make any sense. I know that Thievery likes to incorporate world beats into their tracks and I find DJ Shadow to be a tad more experimental at times, but I find both euqally satisfying.

Can honestly say I haven't heard a lot of DJ Shadow's stuff, but from what I have heard I would rather lean towards Thievery Corp.
Why? I'm not real sure, I think I just prefer Thiev. Corps style and have been a fan for a long time. Will attempt to get more DJ Shadow into me and get back to you. |

Thievery might not be in business if it were'nt for the mainstream acceptance of Shadow....not to say they wouldn't making music..but lets face it ,prior to Shadow, people weren't checking for beat music. Granted Thievery has grown leaps and bounds since their debut...but it just wouldn't be the same without Mr. Josh Davis. Personally, I enjoy Shadows ability to trancend all genres. His solo efforts are solid, but his work with artists like Thom Yourke (sp?) on the UNKLE album blow me away. I recently heard a song he did with Zach De La Rocha, formerly of Rage against the machine...and I was in awe of how well his production mached De La Rocha's delivery. For the film "Dark Days" he created a wonderfully painful score that really emphasized the desperation of the people living in an underground abandoned subway tunnel. He's a pioneer and a great creative mind. I think it was Rolling Stone that called him the Jimi Hendrix of the sampler.
I have really enjoyed Thievery's last couple albums. Mirror Conspircy is a nice collection of good grooves and great vocal performances. The Richest Man In Babylon just feels like a continuation of M.C. but I enjoy them both...actually anything that ESL puts out is woth picking up. ..I'm a little biased having grown up in HipHops hayday..but It's Shadow by miles for me. |
