Thievery might not be in business if it were'nt for the mainstream acceptance of Shadow....not to say they wouldn't making music..but lets face it ,prior to Shadow, people weren't checking for beat music. Granted Thievery has grown leaps and bounds since their debut...but it just wouldn't be the same without Mr. Josh Davis. Personally, I enjoy Shadows ability to trancend all genres. His solo efforts are solid, but his work with artists like Thom Yourke (sp?) on the UNKLE album blow me away. I recently heard a song he did with Zach De La Rocha, formerly of Rage against the machine...and I was in awe of how well his production mached De La Rocha's delivery. For the film "Dark Days" he created a wonderfully painful score that really emphasized the desperation of the people living in an underground abandoned subway tunnel. He's a pioneer and a great creative mind. I think it was Rolling Stone that called him the Jimi Hendrix of the sampler.
I have really enjoyed Thievery's last couple albums. Mirror Conspircy is a nice collection of good grooves and great vocal performances. The Richest Man In Babylon just feels like a continuation of M.C. but I enjoy them both...actually anything that ESL puts out is woth picking up. ..I'm a little biased having grown up in HipHops hayday..but It's Shadow by miles for me.
