Does anyone else have a Fiero?
Just wondering if anyone else here has a Pontiac Fiero. I have an 87 GT. It's up on jackstands right now awaiting a water pump replacement (I have been putting it off for 3 months).
Here's a picture. I have to get rid of that pinstripe on the hood, every time I see it, I cringe. I have done some 'mods'. It has a 2 1/4" catback exhaust and a high flow cat. I put black carpet in it instead of the stock gray. I put a set of driving lamps in (you can see them in the picture). And I replaced the entire stereo. Sony 50wx4 head unit, Kenwoods up front, Boston Acoustics in the back, and a 10" sub. I have a set of 17" wheels to put on it too. -Steve |

The 4 cylinder 5 speed cars can get around 40mpg, while the V6 5 speeds get around 30. A V6 automatic like mine gets around 25. They're reliable if they are taken care off, mine wasn't and things are constantly breaking on it. But then I know of people that have had no trouble.
There's a forum that I am a member of that has over 10,000 members. They have all the info you could ever want. http://www.fiero.nl/forum Everyone there is really helpful. |

In my opinion, fieros are kinda...um...trashy. Every one ive ever seen is somewhat rusted, usually has really nasty louvres (sp?) on the rear window, and sounds like a riding lawnmower. I understand the idea; make a light rwd sportcoup, thats somewhat economical, but another company did that, far better....Toyota and the Mr2. People have their own opinions as to what cars are good or not, and imo fieros are not good. This is a rumor but i heard that those things could explode if hit in the rear.

I don't think you were seeing Fieros then, likely MR2s. The Fiero has plastic body panels, just like a Saturn. In fact, the body panels for the Saturns are made on the exact same machines that the Fiero panels were made on. So your chances of seeing a (visibly) rusted Fiero are basically impossible, unless they were driving around without body panels (which some guys in the club are known to do). They don't make louvers for the back windows. And it's pretty much impossible to make a Fiero explode by hitting it in the back (or hitting it anywhere for that matter). The gastank is under the center console, which is probably the safest place to put a tank in any car. If I came off sounding like a dick, I didn't mean it. I am really into Fieros and I know more about them than most people. I get kind of offended at misinformed people, which is true of most car enthusiasts it seems. eh, no offense taken. I prefer the mr2, thus why i mentioned it. The main fiero im referencing for my post, was owned by a friend of my dads. It was just such a pile of shit. Missing half the body panles (that would explain the whole "rust" thing i talked about). The headlight motors didnt always work so the car either winked or just couldt be driven at night. Although I SWEAR this thing had louvres on the rear window tho, that part i garauntee. Not sure where he got them, or hell if he even made them (he was a garbage man who tended to ghetto rig things. As for the whole exploding thing, like i said it was a rumor. I didnt really feel a need to double check it, since i dont really care that much. Good to know they wont explode tho.

you can get louvers for the fiero. It wasn't a bad little car for what it was. Appropriately named, since the first version of it tended to catch fire from time to time I drove one once, and I thought that considering it was basically a Citation turned around and with a different body, it handled nicely. I wouldn't want one as a pizza delivery car though - you gotta drive RWD, midengined cars kinda carefully in the snow, so it'd suck for winter deliveries. I prefer the mr2 (maybe 'cause I have a 95 turbo) myself, but I won't dis the fiero. It was a nice, cheap little sports car that you didn't have to have a trust fund to afford. |

I had a '91 MR2 and knew a couple guys with Fieros. The debate was always "my Toyota has better fit & finsh" to their "my Fiero has more HP". Of course if I'd had a turbo MR2 it wouldn't have been a contest but as it was...
Anyway, my point was the Fiero had some pretty ardent fans. They really did like their cars so I'm thinking there must be redeeming qualities to this car. If it trips your trigger, go for it! |

i would love to have fastback gt sometime, though with either an ls1 or an L67 in it.. biggest gripe though is that mid-late 80s GM interior, yuch. though come to think of it i could probably do a 2.0T and 6 speed out of one of the new 9-3 sports sedans and keep the stick and be happy that way as well.

QUOTE] I'm no sure about the explosions, but I'm pretty sure they were discontinued because of their inability to pass the crash test standards. It's not what I'd call a safe car, if you care about that sort of thing.

shakran - I hadn't seen those before. But they would probably look kinda crappy on a notchback (non-GT) I have only ever seen louvers on one car and they looked really good but I think they were a 1-off on a fastback GT. Theyre supposedly not too bad in the snow. I don't know, mine doesn't go out in the snow. But I hear that if you put some tall and skinny tires on the back, like 185/70-14s or something, they're pretty good. There are a lot of people that drive them year round.
Nimisys - Quite a few people put in the interior from a 4th generation Firebird/Camaro. It completly changes how the car looks. And 1 or 2 have put in 3000GT dashboards. here is a Firebird dash: Quote:
