COLLEGE STUDENTS: How many hours of sleep (on average) do you get daily?
I am in a Statistics class, and we have to do a project on a certain topic. My group has a hypothesis on how many hours of sleep college students get on average daily, and I would like to see if it's true. The hours of sleep you get include naps, overnight sleeping, sleeping on the job, sleeping at school, etc.
So, if you are a college student, please take this poll- and help a fellow college student out! |

I get about 6-7 hours on a good night. Plus an extra hour or two of nap after school.
On a bad one....3-4-5. And the same amount for nap, it varies a lot. Sometimes no nap at all... LOL @ teh last 1.

Hmm.. Probably in the area of 6 hours. Terrible habit which causes me to sleep for about half an hour in each class except for the really early ones.

I went with 4-6 because that is what I usually get during the week, but on the weekends I make up for it a bit sleeping around 10 hours friday/saturday night.

Well, I am a graduate student, but I can tell you that as an undergrad (doing crew, so waking up at 4:30am five days a week) I slept about 4 hours a night on average. Then I would take a nap during the day, every few days. I was a walking zombie for the most part, all four year of college. But damn I loved crew.
And now that I am a grad student, I sleep about 6 hours on average, though usually a little less than that. There have been some semesters when the average was around 5, since I pulled so many all-nighters due to workload. Someday, someday, I will get 7-8 hours a night. I fear for what it does to my long-term health, sleeping so little for so many years.

6 hrs on average. When I'm busy, of course I'll be writing papers and stuff.
Then again when I am not, I just can't really sleep for some funny reasons. I do wake up early to talk to my girlfriend who's still studying in Europe- maybe that's why I don't have the healthy-8-hour-sleep.

As an undergraduate i was doing about 8-9 hours, postgraduate is a whole different story and ranges much more anywhere from 6 - 10 depending on what work is due that week. Over the worse of it for this semester so got 8 hours last night - woohoo.

About 7 hrs a night...I never nap.
On the otherhand, my roomie, sleeps AT LEAST 10 HOURS every night. If not, he naps during the day to get his time in.. [btw, i voted for 7-9 hrs/night] I've never pulled an all-nighter either, but only one quarter completed so far. You know this survey's results aren't the most valid, because it's not a random sample (in the most literal sense, as you have the partcipants who all internet users, and on a specific message board) and it's self-inclusive (IIRC) that is, each participant gave their input on their own will/self-approach. (Not trying to harass ya, I'm just recalling what I learned from staying after my pre-calc class to finish my tests, since stats was in the same room afterwards ] The teacher and kids were very specific on things and seized every chance to challenge the validity of any data/stats. regards, keyshawn

keyshawn, I know that there is a lot of bias, but I frankly don't wanna go out on the streets and poll people that are rushing to get to class. Meh, it's not like I'm publishing these results for my doctorate thesis or something. Trust me, I thought about all the biases before I made this post, and in the end, I just decided I didn't care.

Most of the important dates of my life have had around 3 hours of sleep, including board exams. I will get home tonight, and between 5-9 I will be VERY tired unless I go out and do something. Then at 9 I'll wake up again and be up till 12-2am. If I try to sleep in the 5-9 range I'll wake up between 10-2am and be wide awake and won't be able to sleep until its time to get up anyways. I do sleep in on the weekends from time to time, but even after a really late night I will often be up by 8am on a weekend.

Just a note: you left one-hour gaps in-between your choices. ie. If someone normally sleeps between 6 and 7 hours, how are they supposed to answer?

Well, I just finished grad school a couple of months ago, so though I'm not technically currently a college student I was for roughly the last ten years.
I voted 4-6. It had little to do with college, I just have a very high metabolism, so I recharge quickly. I'll go to bed at about 1:00-2:00 am, then get up at about 5:30-6:00. I have the alarm clock set for 6:15 just in case I need it, but I never do. 4:30 is about my max at night. I do tend to conk out in the early afternoon and need a nap, which adds about 45 minutes to an hour to the total, and gets me in at just under 6:00. For what it's worth, Sissy (20) needs about 9 a night. Gilda

On average I'd say I get about five hours of sleep a night, so that's how I voted! However, like many other's have pointed out, this is often very different on the weekends where I can get up to 10 hours or more in one night. But I still have many busy weekends where this isn't possible combined with many all nighters, so I'd keep my overall average at about 5 hours.

I'd say I get about 5-6 hours of sleep minimum per night. I can't seem to be able to sleep through much more than 7-8, even if I try.
I know it's a terrible habbit, weekends often make it worse. Lately though I've been burning the candle from both ends to deal with finals and the last of my term papers. With the holidays coming, I'm anticipating some well deserved rest. Although, with family visiting, I think that may introduce a whole other kind of stress :P

it's perfectly feasable to have a fraction as an average, but if you want rounding up, we can do that too.
I usually get about 5 - 8 hours of sleep each night, just like i did in college (only a few years ago). It's such a wide range because it depends on if i'm tired or not, literally. Sometimes I won't be tired until 7 or 8, and then i'll sleep until 1pm and be perfectly fine with 5 hours' sleep... and sometimes I'm tired at 5am, and sleep until 1 and get a solid 8. It's almost like my body knows when I'll be getting up and depending on how much recharge i need, i feel tired at the right time. |

I'm no longer in college, but I remember the lack of sleep that I got during that time. I was taking a full course load plus working 30-40 hours a week at my job. I would typically wake up around 6 am and not get home until about 11 or 12 pm.
I may have gotten less sleep because I also had to spend time with jj. I would often fall asleep at his place while watching a movie, but at least we were together then. I never saw my parents even though I lived with them. My parents said I just came there to sleep for a few hours and shower. Looking back, I loved college, even though I didn't really like it at the time. It was a lot of work and a lot of long hours, but there was more freedom than now...if you can believe that. Although I think that has a lot to do with the fact that I had no bills to pay.... Those of you still in school, you will graduate one of these days. Hopefully, you can get a job and have a 'normal' schedule and get enough sleep. If you do let me know how you did that because after 6 years I'm still trying to do that

My wife, who just graduated from teacher's college falls into the 4-6 hours per night. She would go to sleep between 8pm and 9pm and get up between 2am and 3am to do homework or work.
In her first year of teaching and she still keeps to this odd schedule.

For the past three years, I've averaged 6 hours or less, "making up" for lost sleep on the weekends... but since going abroad last semester, I had been getting at least 8 hours a night... but alas, final papers/projects have put an end to that... tonight will probably be the last night I get 8 hours of sleep until the end of next week. Probably more like 3+ days with about 2 hours of sleep total. Joy.

Typically about 7. I usually make sure to get everything done so I can get to bed at a reasonable hour, but 6 or less usually happens at least once a week, and during exams, it's rarely more than 4.

I usually get right about seven hours every night. Lees then that and my brain turns to porridge. In bed by 2200 most nights and up by 0500.
