fat fingers after wrist surgery

i still have a cast on on wrist below my elbow, but they took out the pins and larger cast (to my armpit) 5 weeks after breaking both of my wrist bones playing hockey. i've been excercising my fingers , rubbing them, and trying to keep my arm elevated, but my fingers are still hugely fat.

i can't even make my index finger touch the top of my palm because the thickness of the finger gets in the way.

any suggestions for returning my fingers to normal? how long does it take?

it's pretty gross to look at.

been about 2 weeks since you posted this. how's the progression?

with the fracture, setting it, placing of pins, a cast, restricted movement, you have a lot of reasons to have inflammation, which can lead to swelling, as well as restriction of blood flow and lypmhatic fluid. in essense, you have a multitude of reasons for your fingers to be swollen.

other than doing what you're doing, there's not much else to do. the swelling could take weeks to months to subside.

I just had a broken foot back in March. It wasn't until about 6 weeks after I had broken it that the swelling really went down. The Dr told me about 6-8 weeks before it would go down. So date the healing from the last procedure you had done on it. One key for the swelling to go down was getting out of my brace and walking on it. The movement improves the blood flow and until you get better blood flow the swelling won't go down completely. I wish I'd noticed this thread earlier and been able to tell you this then. I haven't been around as much or reading as much here because of everything that's been going on. Good Luck. It's totally frustration when you're body isn't feeling or looking normal.

One more thing - The Dr told me that as long as there was swelling that putting ice on it would help. It did. I found that keeping ice on it almost completely got rid of the swelling at times. Try that out.
