Wish me luck
I just gotta whine.
I HATE the dentist. I hate them with a passion. I have had too many rude, mean dentists. I've had them call me a lier, ignore my questions completely, and be dowright snooty. I've had them do such sloppy jobs that I ended up with a raw cheek from a rough filling and one dentist broke a filling. These are not instances from the same dentist. This is from 4 different dentists in very different parts of the state. I am able to handle pain anywhere else in my body quite well but in my mouth NO. I don't handle pain in my mouth. I metabolize the novacain VERY quickly. The last time any dentist did work on my teeth he had to give me 4 shots of novacain and I could still feel twinges of pain. He said he couldn't give me any more. Well today is doomsday. I have all 4 of my wisdom teeth in just fine. They were in about 4 or 5 years ago. Unfortunately ONE of them on the top grew in close to where my jawbone angles down. The outside of the tooth is right up against my jawbone and almost impossible to clean. I cannot fit my brush inbetween and the only way to clean it is to scrape it with a pick. Well consequently I've developed a cavity on that side of the tooth that is hard to reach. It's bad enough at this point that the dentist gave me the option of pulling it or fixing it. I opted to get it pulled because I know I'd have MORE trouble later with it and it IS a wisdom tooth so somewhat more disposable in a sense. I know I'm saving myself more work later by getting it pulled but I am dreading this. I've heard such horror stories about dry sockets or absesses and other complications. I am not looking forward to this. On the one hand I'm being a big baby. It's only one wisdom tooth. Other the other hand, I HATE THE DENTIST!!!. I get tense about going for a CLEANING. I would rather have a colposcopy again than go to the dentist for this. Thanks for letting me whine. If you have any suggestions for pain relief or even relaxing while in the dentist chair, let me know.

I used to be that way about the dentist. Once I found a good one, with cool hygenists, then everything has gotten better. I still get the anxiety, but it goes quick. I had 4 fillings removed and refilled, totally not fun, but with plenty of gas, novacaine and headphones, it wasn't so bad. Then my last 2 wisdom teeth pulled, plenty of gas, and novicaine, and everything went fine.
Just do some deep breathing, and try to relax as best you can. |

I would say for wisdom teeth......definitely get gassed. I did, it didn't make it feel any better later but at least I wasn't there for all the tuggin' and pryin'
For regular visits, maybe a leftover Tylenol w/codeine, valium, or some other painkiller from the medicine chest. Nothing to knock you out but just a relaxer. Good Luck.

Take a tylenol or advil before you leave for the appointment. I've had tooth implant surgeries under gas and had my wisdom teeth pulled out while completely under. Of the two, I preferred being completely out because I couldn't see/feel/hear what they were doing, especially in such a confined area. Get them to give you whatever will relax you the most. The more you are relaxed, the easier it will be on you and your body, and the quicker they will be able to work. Putting an ace bandage over an ice pack on your cheeck will SIGNIFICANTLY reduce any swelling, and save you from getting chipmunk cheeks.

Consious Sedation. (sp?) I had that when I my wisdom teeth were taken out all at once. Coming out of the sedation was the hardest part of the whole thing.
I have not found my ultimate Dentist but I have found that by going every 6 months forces me to face the fear more often and I am almost over my Dentist fear. I used to require N2O just for cleanings. I have not needed it for 2 years now. Nor do I dread to visits. I almost look forward to having very clean and smooth feeling teeth.

Well the Dentist numbed things quite thoroughly. The tooth broke and his plyers knocked my lower front teeth. OUCH. But it seemed to take less than 10 min once he'd let the novacain take effect. The actual pulling was quick and almost completely painless. I have a headache and my jaw aches but there is not a lot of soreness. The actual hole that the tooth left is obviously tender but beyond that there is little swelling. The site continues to bleed off an on but this morning seems to have almost stopped completely. I went to bed last night (propped up) with packing in since it was still bleeding somewhat. When I changed the gauze during the night it was completely saturated with blood so I know it was bleeding quite a bit then. Possibly because I was laying down. At least while it's still bleeding it's washing any debris out. I only had a milkshake for supper and have gently rinsed with salt water so there isn't a lot of chance for debris at least.
I still hate the dentists but at least this was better than I expected. Now to get my fillings done. Hopefully only 2 more visits and I should be good for a while. Whew.
