Depression

I was sitting today and I was woundering how depression can be (i cant spell sorry) genetic... I think that its just someway to get out of dealing with todays kids with fucked up ways of thinking....

MyGrandparents my mom dad and anyone I can think of in my famly are all depressed people I dont ever talk to them because of this...

But for some reasion I find myself always being depresed or just in a fucked up state of mind... I was woundering if other people find themself in this state of mind for no reasion and what do you do?

I will be reading this post often.

I also wonder how much current environment influences mood.

my friend is bi-polar aka manic-depression.
it is indeed genetic & runs in her family.

she takes medication that she will have to take for the rest of her life in order to remain chemically balanced & a happy person.

please, talk to your doctor.

when i was a child, my mother was horribly depressed & she was also the victim of the 70s housewife syndrome... doctors gave her diet pills, in fact they were "black beauties" (amphetimines) & then also sleeping pills so she could sleep at night). she tried suicide (over-dosing on those sleeping pills) THREE times.

shame they didn't have what she really needed back then. today she is happy & pleasant thanks to an Rx of paxal™.
my brother should also be on that or something, but he remains in denial & he remains completely unhappy.

Well, there's a difference between being sad and depressed. Depression is when the sad and hopeless feelings persist more than any other feeling for around 6 months or more. There are studies suggesting depression might be genetic but nothing is set in stone yet. Environment can have a lot to do with the way you feel. If people aroudn you are sad or unhappy, it rubs off. Misery loves company. Unfortunately, company doesn't like misery. Happy people stick around those who feel the same way.

Make sure you understand that drugs prescribed by psychiatrists can have dangerous effects. Some people find they work. Others get no benefit at all and end up worse for it. Be leery of anyone who uses drugs as the first way to handle depression. Pharmaceutical companies have massive influence when it comes to doctors and, unfortunately, psychiatrists too.

gondath, i agree to some degree.

first trying to change your environment & life style is the first step. that can totally change your attitude. it did for me!

but i do believe some folks' brains are geneticly imbalanced in certain ways. & lucky that in today's world there is help. sometimes just therapy can help. it worked for me! but others will require medication. it's not a sin to take a pill if it makes your life better. and i'm not talking about recreational drug use. i'm talking about general well being & happiness.

aw you edited before my reply

yeah, i would also be very wary of the doctor who just willy nilly writes out a prescription. your general practioner should send you to a therapist or psychiatrist, who can determine if you require meds or not.

Drugs tend to be more necessary and effective with major psychological problems. People who are bipolar, schizophrenic, depressed to the point they refuse to get out of bed every day, are some of the major ones. The therapy approach is best to start with if you can function for a while in the state you are in. It depends on the person and circumstance, ultimately.

I only object if drugs are the only thing prescribed for what are minor problems, in some cases. Relying on these types of drugs can have long term consequences. I wouldn't recommend being on them unless absolutely necessary. That said, there are still people who need them to go about their daily lives. One fact I find amusing is the commercials that say there MIGHT be a correlation between a chemical imbalance and a particular disorder. Some of the disorders aren't even understood well enough to prescribe a cure. I'd read up on the medicines, regardless of what a psychiatrist might try to sell you on. Many times they get incentives from the drug companies, especially if they work out of hospitals. Psychology has a long way to go before it becomes a hard science.
