Well, there's a difference between being sad and depressed. Depression is when the sad and hopeless feelings persist more than any other feeling for around 6 months or more. There are studies suggesting depression might be genetic but nothing is set in stone yet. Environment can have a lot to do with the way you feel. If people aroudn you are sad or unhappy, it rubs off. Misery loves company. Unfortunately, company doesn't like misery. Happy people stick around those who feel the same way.
Make sure you understand that drugs prescribed by psychiatrists can have dangerous effects. Some people find they work. Others get no benefit at all and end up worse for it. Be leery of anyone who uses drugs as the first way to handle depression. Pharmaceutical companies have massive influence when it comes to doctors and, unfortunately, psychiatrists too.
