First, you will need to get ahold of all 3 credit reporting agencies, experian, equifax, and transunion. They don't share data with each other. Unless you have been denied credit, you will have to pay to get a copy of your credit report. The fee is like 5 or 10 bucks in most cases. They will mail you a copy of your credit report and there will be a form that comes with it that you can fill out and send back. When they receive this form, they will investigate it. Once they start investigating, the company in question has 30 days to respond or it comes off your report. When they are finished, they will send you a new copy of your credit report.

If you know that a credit contains an error...just write that credit reporting agency telling them to fix the error.
Simple. No evidence or explanation required on your part. They are required to verify the info they report and if they don't or can't they are required to remove. Not that this usually happens but there are statutory damages easily recoverable in small claims court for violations of the FCRA. Also, if you are denied credit as a result of inaccurate information then you can recover punitive damages also. It usually takes lots and lots of letter writing, and unless you send certified mail, return reciept requested, your requests are likely to get 'lost in the mail' Also, some states (like Maryland) require the CR bureaus to provide a copy of their report to consumers for free once a year. Your state might also. Finally, each of the CRA (credit reporting agencies) has a web site where you can obtain a copy of your credit report. Good Luck, -bear

Go to Equifax.com, pay the $8 or $12 for online report from all three, then use their online service to dispute the inaccuracy (up to 17). If they don't respond within 30 days, it will be removed by default.

you can go to a few of those 30 day free trail credit report people like on MSN and they have a form you can fill out to send to the credit agencies, that is what I did and it was much easier then I could have thought

Send everything certified mail!!!
They will try and screw you on the whole 30 days thing so you need proof that they indeed had 30 days to verify. This was the most important part of the process. We had one try and tell us they had 10 days left to verify when the 30 days had been up. Gave them the proof and they backed down. After 30 days, send a request to have the information removed (site the law--can't think of it offhand). We found it took about 60-90 days to get something off. It is not in their best interest to work with you, you have to take the upper hand or nothing will happen. My wife looked up forms and such on the internet and used those in all of her mailings.
