Are you accomplishing your goals?

I graduated in 2003 from highschool. I want to continue my education but I need either a scholarship or around $35,000 CDN to attend the school I would like to study at. I invisioned myself working fulltime and painting and working on my portfolio after work and on weekend, instead, working has consumed my motivation and inspiration to accomplish my personal goals. That is my fault for not learning how to strike a balance and so, on tuesday, I am resigning from my job. I feel guilt over it already as I like my boss but I need a soild block of time for myself. I hope to sell the Porsche I have been working on over the last year and use the money to travel next. It feels like I wasted the past eleven months of my life, I regret not abusing the oportunity I have now to live freely at home still, I don't know why I even thought working fulltime would help me to accomplish my goals. I guess this is more of a release for me.

Do you define your goals and set out to accomplish them? Looking back over the past 12 months do you feel your time was well used or wasted?

I am working towards my goals. I graduated with the mindset of "I have a good paying job, with plenty of opportunity for upward movement, I don't need school". Then recession came and I realized my mindset should have been "I don't have enough experience to land me a decent job when there's competition on the line!". Well, since I've decided the field of work I was in sucks, and have changed my mindset. I've set new goals, and am doing everything I can to achieve them.

I used to set tons and tons of goals, and only grasp a few, and say "oh, I don't have the money for this or that". Now, I've set one or two long-term goals, and keep that in sight at all times (lack of money is no longer an opt out for me). If you want it bad enough you'll make it happen one way or another.

I have recently found goals in my life to work towards. I am now on my way to achieving them. About 2 months ago, I had no goal to work towards and all that time before it (some 7 months living on my own) I would say have been wasted. I have been extremely productive with my time now however.

By the way NotMinus, there are tons and tons of lurkers on this board- if you bothered to compare your views with those of other threads you would have realized that 35 views and no replies are standard fare for TFP.

Goals change. Mine change all the time. Remember that there are short and long term goals. Make sure you create a timeline that is realistic for your goals.

BTW, you are young. Enjoy yourself a bit. Save like you are gonne retire at 50 and live like you are gonna die tomorrow.

IMO - Get a reliable cheap car with air bags. Fancy/fast cars are for fancy people with the money to maintain/restore them.

sure

I'm into goals.

I've changed my goals short and long term all the time, but underlying are the values that help me with those goals. It's important to make sure that you don't compromise your values in order to achieve those goals.

My most recent goal was buying a new property. I never thought I'd ever be able to buy something in Manhattan and last year, not only did I buy something, I bought something in Manhattan. I also renovated it and paid cash for that renovation.

But in order to do it, I had to make sacrifices and know that the goal was there and never took my eye off the goal. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard either. It just took time and I had to be patient.

People want instant gratification all the time, it took me a good while to learn that while I was trying to find that instant gratification time was wasting away.

My time was not wasted at all.

as far as 35 views and no comments.... I hadn't seen this thread yet. Remember you have to be patient.

Good luck.

I personally feel unless you set many goals and make them specific you can't really achieve much. I mean what are you working towards? You need a reason or a destination.

I set many specific goals, long term and short term and while many of them are accomplished some don't. The trick is to be very adaptable. Some goals I make conflict with each other and you just have to decide which path is better in terms of your ultimate goals.

I used to be a lurker myself. Anyways, thanks for the replys. I took the first step today and left my notice of resignation on my bosses desk to find tomorrow. I was planning on tell him today but it was his day off and I didn't want to interupt his long weekend. I definatly feel a little anxious right now as I haven't done anything this impulsive for sometime now. I don't know how things will go tomorrow when my boss finds out also, I think he expected me to work in his shop for years to come. It feels great though to be taken the first steps to living my life the way I see fit.

Long term goals I'm slowly working towards. Short term goals are dependent on others in my life, so at times they can change. My goals are very specific and they are time dependent.

I am working towards them still. Of course, I am 25- I still have time, and I have a child to raise and money to make. I put Moon's dreams first (he is getting into an art Institute to major in Photography this summer) because of his current unemployment and the fact that he does not want to return to his job. I am still meditating on what I want to do- there are so many passions I have, but the biggest one is brewing as we speak- it has to do with creating peace and transcending peace and unity in the world, whether it be through writing, speaking, travelling, volunteering....or probably all of the above. Plus I have other goals in my life as well. It's just a matter of taking it all one day at a time. I'll get there.
