my sister thinks she has a brain tumor
well my sister called sobbing today saying she was really scared. she used to work for a neurologist as his assistant.....
so she emailed him asking if he might give her some advice on some symptoms she'd been having.... she has a weird cyst near one of her temples and for awhile the eye on that side has done a weird twitching thing every now and then, and that eyelid noticeably droops. she also has been having horrid migraine headaches, vision problems (which is odd because she has 20/15 vision), ear ringing and hearing probs, dizzyness, nausea, general tiredness and groginess.... so she emailed that neurologist and he said definitely get this checked out right away. he couldn't give her an unofficial exam or anything.....but she doesn't have medical insurance and all those tests can be pretty expensive. i told her to go get checked out just to ease her mind....but she says if they do find something, then any medical insurance won't fund it if she later decides she needs insurance because it will be a "pre-existing condition". i had a friend in high school who had a cholesterol cyst near one of her temples and she had very similar symptoms. it was a simple operation procedure, but would have been costly had she not been on military benefits. so just wondering if any of you have experienced anything with tumors or cysts on or around the head.....or known anyone who's gone through stuff like this. thanks! i know it will ease her mind if i can give some advice from people who've had this kind of thing.....

I havent been through anything with a cyst, but for about two weeks I thought I had a brain tumor for really no good reason, but I was very afraid. I cried and was just miserable. I found a bunch of other people who though they had them too. I think it's a very common fear.

one reason doctors dont normally treat family members is because with yourself or with those close to you, you usually diagnose the worst possibility....
but i hope she doesnt... ... ... that wouldnt be cool at all!

well she's not his family member, but him being a renowned doctor, he can't just see her off the records...that would seem suspicious and he could get in trouble for it.....but i think at this point that's the only way she would agree to get checked out before having health insurance....which may take awhile to procure....

It won't hurt for her to get some health insurance. I shouldn't take too long to get some.
I don't mean to plug. I just know from experience that Blue Cross Blue Shield can be reasonable in price and you can find their number on the internet. If she's young and in good health otherwise she may not even need any medical check before they'll insure her. I'm sure there's other insurance companies out there that she could check out too.

The drooping eyelid and visual problems are neurologic in nature and worrisome, although the remaining complaints could be due to a benign inner ear problem. She needs a neurological exam, and most likely an MRI of the head.
If she had a good relationship with the neurologist, it certainly is not unethical for him to take a look at her au gratis. Is he aware of her insurance problems? Most doctors put the welfare of thier patients ahead of financial concerns(most good ones anyway). Also has she looked into applying for public assistance? She will need some type of coverage as the workup is expensive and treatment even more so. As far as the arguement of being uninsurable in the future, if the condition is benign, then she is not as much an insurance risk and it should have no effect on insurance in the future. If the condition is more serious, then it is important to get it treated regardless of future insurance concerns.
