Pitching Ideas to Radio Stations?
A bandmate of mine and I have come up with an idea for a showcase that is really low overhead, but we really want a local radio station to do some sponsorship and promotion for it.
How do I go about the following: - Getting an appointment with the Radio Advertising/Sales/Promotion people? - Presenting the idea to them in a way that they will take us seriously? Also, if anyone has ideas about the following, I'd really like to hear them: - Putting on a 5 hour musical showcase. - Legality of doing an entire show of cover songs. - Keeping your sanity while all this goes on around you. |

Go watch "Airheads". It's all you'll even need to know.
Seriously though, most radio stations around here have a staff dedicated to helping assemble shows like the one your talking about. I've been able to just walk in and talk to the promotions department, and even get on air with the DJ a couple of times. |

I've had to call several radio stations in the past for promotional type purposes and they've always been friendly and helpful. You shouldn't have any problems setting up an appointment and allowing them to hear your ideas. Good luck!

A way to get an appointment is to just ask, but show enough that they will be interested. Another way is to leverage another relationsip. You might even convince someone at a lower position at the station to be your coach and advisor since they know the folks inside the station better than you.
Once you get the appointment, better be able to show a clear, bottom line financial benefit for the station to do this. They are in the business to make money so they need to seen an ROI - return on investment. And any time they use is their number one investment! Good luck.
