Any Volleyball Fans?

Playing, watching, whatever!

I finally found a local group to play with. They go down to Destin for the Volleyball week at Fudpuckers. The women's team won the A division.

I am about a B player. I like to set more than spike (I have very little vertical leap. I am working on that)

We play outdoor grass in the summer and indoor in the fall through spring.

Any tips on playing co-ed fours? Diamond vs. Box?

I love vball. My roomies and I (I'm a girl living with 5 guys) recently set up a net in our backyard. I have always liked the box, though I don't have too much experience with the diamond.

The problem with the box is the big open spot in the middle where it is easy to let it fall since you aren't sure who's it is. This can be avoided though, just as long as your team has good communication. When playing, I tend to say someone's name, especially if it looks like it may be between 2 players. This way someone goes for it. My roomies like it when I do it cuz it decreases the amount of confusion on the court and results in less missed shots.

We tend to like the box too... As long as you have a good setter, and a okay backup.

We lost the tournament due to some A level player deciding I didn't know what I was doing and squeezing me out. Luck of the Draw sucks sometimes.

We have another tournament this weekend, but we have our own team. Should be a different outcome...

Anyone have good drills to increase my vertical leap?

I was AA/open until I hurt my knee. I lost 3 inches off my vertical.

So now I watch it during the Olympics. That's about it.

I love volleyball so much I tattoed it on my arm in case I ever develop amnesia and forgot how much I loved it.

I've been playing for about 14 years, off and on, since high school. I started out playing tennis but fell in LOVE with volleyball. I love everything about the game, thinking about it, talking about, drawing it, getting a tattoo of it, watching it, and especially PLAYING it. My favorite is 2's on sand. I started out indoor, but came to love playing on sand.

Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to help others learn the game, coach intramural teams, learn new skills, and met many incredible people from all walks of life. I love volleyball so much that it once cured my 101 degree fever because I got up out of bed to play it! Now THAT's insane!

I started out setting, but realized pretty quickly that I would rather be a hitter. I'm proud to say that although I'm short (5'5") compared to other male players, I often hold my own and have, together with my sand partner, beaten some impressive teams in tournaments. Gotta love that.

Sorry to hear that you lost the tournament. There will be plenty of others and you'll get better with each game.

As for drills, try to practice jumping on sand. At the net from the far left or right, jump up and practice blocking. Do this from left to middle to right, or vice versa. Squat down, push as hard as you can against the sand, and feel yourself reaching for the sky. You have to believe and want to jump as high as your body will let you. I have heard everything from I'm too short, to I'm a girl, to I can't do it. But no matter who you are, if you believe and know that you are capable of doing exceptional things with your body then, with pratice, your body will comply.

Also, if you want to practice spiking. Do the same thing. Practice on sand.

Do that as many times as you can possibly do. I can almost promise you that once you jump on sand and then play on grass or indoor, you'll feel like you can fly! Good luck.

We did much better this weekend. We put together a team that played well together. Heat got us ( I think it hit 97 degrees ) but we had fun. Our setter won MVP for the bracket we were in.

Thanks for the advise on the leap. I'll try it.

Hi dragonhawk, I posted a while earlier about the Air Alert program. It's a 12 week long program that requires a lot of dedication. Around 15-40+ minutes a day, 5 days a week for 12 weeks. I increased a significant amount after 8 weeks, but had to quit then because of a bad back. I haven't been able to do anything vigorous in a while because of my lower back.

Anyhow, you've probably heard of Air Alert before, let me know if you don't have it but want the whole program.
