The New Tilted Mileage Thread
New Miles: 135 (bike)
Thread Mileage: 135 Personal Mileage: 135 Notes: We used to have a thread where people tracked their miles running. I miss that, but figured it would be nice to start a new one rather than resurrecting the old one. Here's how I envision this working. You do some miles on your feet or bike, or any means that are powered by you and not gasoline. You come here and report them. Update your stats, the thread stats, and then in the notes part, you can make some comments on the mileage. Right now, I'm describing this thread. I'm envisioning sort of a blog that everyone is invited as a primary contributor. However, if you just want to log some numbers, that's cool too. I am by no means a hardcore biker. I own no spandex. I use platform pedals, and most of the time I've pretty slow. There is no carbon fiber anything on my ride. I moved to Los Angeles about a year ago to go to school. When I did, I got an idea in my head that I'd commute to school by bicycle. I have no idea why. I didn't have a bike. I had only spent like 3 days in LA in my life. I didn't have the slightest idea whether such a thing was in any way reasonable or feasible. So, I traded an old laptop for a bike (thanks alinn) and packed up to move. For a year, I rode my bike to school. I stopped getting parking passes. I just rode. It isn't far -- only about 3 miles each way. But I did it each day went from being winded to being exhilarated. After a bit, I felt like the commute wasn't quite long enough. After 9 months of this, I decided I would get a nicer bike (meaning one that wasn't bought for someone 5 inches taller than me) and extend my reach. I picked up a Surly Crosscheck, some lights, a rack, and here I am. My new routine is to ride to school. After school, I ride from school to a bus stop, and take the bus to work with my bike on the rack. Then I ride home from work. All told, this is about 15 miles, with 10 miles of it on the trip home from work. At some point, I'll start biking to work too. I'm proud of my miles because they have meaning. I've got a car, but I ride by choice... Every mile on my bike is a mile that I choose not to spend in my car. It's a mile that isn't bad for the environment, a mile that I spent exercising rather than sitting in a cage, a mile that I didn't pollute, send money to oil dictatorships, or pad the pockets of the oil companies. It's a mile that didn't contribute to the stress of traffic in LA. And I go places. Under my own power. Tonight's ride sparked the idea for this thread because I saw two interesting things. The first was a pair of motorcycles racing down Silverlake Dr with no lights on. They were probably doing about 75 on a residential street. At first I thought they were just assholes, but then 2 police cars with lights blazing and sirens blaring showed up. And then a helicopter with a spotlight. So they were probably more exciting than I first thought. Then, as I came huffing and puffing up a hill to turn on Sunset Blvd, I saw the tail end of a convoy or about 40 or 50 bikers disappearing around the corner. It was clearly a group ride of some sort. As I waited for the light to change for my left turn, 2 stragglers went cruising by, obviously having fun. After they had gone about 20 yards past me, one turned and looked in my direction and waved for me to follow them. If they hadn't been headed away from my house at 11:30 PM after a 16 hour day, I probably would have done it. I hope I see them again. So, you don't have to write a novel to post in this thread. I definitely won't each time I post. But share your thoughts when you've got them, and enjoy getting places through your own energy.

cool thread. but I work in KM, not miles.
So I ride for 4km every day to work and 4km back. this is since the 1st nice day of summer /spring. I'm probably up to 200km(that would be 25times going to and from work total) so...124.27 miles. New Miles: 124.27 (bike) Thread Mileage: 259.27 Personal Mileage: 124.27

New Miles: 5.7 (bike)
Thread Mileage: 324.2 (318.5 + 5.7) Personal Mileage: 140.7 Notes: I'm glad you guys like this idea. Today's ride was just school and back. I was tired from last night, so it felt good to take it easy. I'm not sure if I'll have the luxury of riding this weekend or not -- I have to study a lot. We'll see.

Nice thread .
I can go back to last weekend: 35 mile hike . Then, this week, I took the bus on Monday and walked all the other days (I'm considering that I will walk home soon). Each way is 3.5 km or about 2.2 miles, so that's 2.2*2*4 = 17.6 miles. I also walked for lunch yesterday, let's say 1.2 miles each way (might have been slightly more but this gives a nice round final number, heh) so 17.6 + 2.4 = 19 miles. 19 + 35 = 54. So: New Miles: 54 (walking) Thread Mileage: 378.2 (324.2 + 54) Personal Mileage: 54 -----Added 25/7/2008 at 12 : 52 : 37----- Oh CanuckGuy, I didn't factor in your totals.. Are you using the 22 or 1480 km total? dlish, perhaps a swimming thread is in order . I will see what I can contribute too by sitting in the hot pots at the local swimming pool. or maybe there shoud be a factor if you are swimming like 1km swim = 250000000000 km run or something to that equivelant.
let me know how you go with the scouting reports from poolside ktsp

Today, 52 miles on the bike, year to date 1130 miles. Hiking since June, 55 miles.
So if you count this week only, then thread miles = 430.2, if you count ytd then thread miles = 1563.2 I've been riding lots of miles for something like the last 10 years. I start work at 5:00AM a couple days week, work to 1:00PM then ride for a few hours, ride more on weekends and vacations. I used to ride about 4000 miles a year, the last few years have been about 2500 miles/year. Between more hours working, time at the gym and hiking, I might bike a little less this year. |

Sweet on the biking! I used to log about 5,000km a season on my bike. But I have since calmed down lots. I went for a small ride yesterday though, 20km.
I feel inspired (that and no one wants to come over, cooking for myself sucks) to get out. So perhaps I will add some more tonight. |

My trips to school are shorter than ubertuber's, but I make them pretty frequently. I never wear my GPS watch for the commuting trips (though I should) so I always just estimate a one-way trip at one mile. In reality, some trips are 0.9 mi and some are 2-3. I figure it all averages out in the end. I'm just happy to be finding time to ride the bike at all between my two summer jobs!
Today was a simple there and back: 2 + 1568 = 1570 miles I can't wait until August 25th when the university gym decides that I am a student again and lets me inside. Then I can do the 2-mile ride there, swim for a bit, and tool around campus for another 3-5 miles before coming home. Man, oh man, I can't wait.

New Miles: 3.5 (bike)
Personal Mileage: 5.5 Thread Mileage: 1618.7 + 3.5 = 1622.2 I was just trying to get to school and back and feeling kind of bummed because I missed the open lab hours, but then I discovered an excellent hill tucked away behind the trail by my house on the way back. Some sick part of my brain thought, 'YES, what an excellent time to do a hill workout even though it's humid and I'm wearing jeans!' Well, I guess I thought it was a good idea since I'm going to try to ride my fixie in a triathlon in two months and I don't want my body to be too surprised when I encounter unfamiliar hills. So I did two slow, controlled rides to the top (standing then seated), then two speed rides to the top (standing then seated in aerodynamic mode), then a final extra slow ride seated until the hill got too steep (about halfway) when I had to stand to keep moving forward. It's a good thing there was a nice long flat area to slow down in at the bottom or I would NOT have been able to stop myself. My quads are el done-o.

Uh, no - I beg to differ. While I only get 33-34 mpg in the winter when the engine has to run more to stay warm, I regularly get 37-39 this time of the year. Even took a 12 hour trip last spring going 70-80 mph on the interstate and ran in the 37-39 range.

I'm training for my first half-marathon. It's being held in December.
I guess I just decided to take up running as a way to get fit and the half-marathon is a personal challenge to myself. I never considered myself to have any sort of endurance, and I could have never seen myself doing this several years ago. Anyway, I started running at the beginning of the year, pretty much all on the treadmill. I've probably run 100ish miles so far in the past several months. But I'll start counting today. Today's miles: 5 My miles: 5 Thread miles: 1819.7 + 5 = 1824.7 |
