The TFP Odometer!

Alright folks, the Push-Up Challenge has motivated me to start the TFP Odometer.

The rules are simple, log your miles (or % of miles) ran in this thread. If you're one of those crazy people that uses the metric system (Crazy! ) feel free to log kilometers and we'll do a conversion either way.

Hopefully this will motivate people to get out and pound the pavement. Remember - there's no substitute for running!

I'll start it off:

0+3 = 3 miles

Just as a note:

1 mile = 1.6km

So if you do run X number of kilometres, just divide the number by 1.6.

If you accept walking, I walk 1 km to work every day. I'm still trying to figure out where I can fit running and/or strength training into my new schedule, though.

Yeah, most likely is shin splints, but it might be something worse. Do you run regularly? Does the pain start immediately when you start running, or kick in when you're well into the run? If you rest a week between runs, do you still have the pain?

There are many stretches and exercises you can do to help shin splints, but they are kinda hard to explain in text. Search for them on Google and you should find tons of info about it. Unfortunately if the pain happens every time you run no matter how long you rest between runs, you may have permanent shin splints that never go away. That is bad, and if you keep running through the pain you could really damage your legs. Using a non-impact exercise such as an elliptical machine is probably your best bet if your shin splints never get better.

Okay.. well, I didn't work yesterday, but I got called in today, so 1 km there plus 1 km back.

2 km = 1.25 mi

Total 11.25

BNL,

Carno is pretty dead on about his shin spints advice. The concern is not so much the splints but that they could lead to something much more severe, like a stress fracture.

If it gives you serious pain to run, even after stretching/icing, don't do it. If it continues to persist, see a doctor. My brother had splints that became a stress fracture and he couldn't do crap for weeks while he healed, so be careful.

As for your concern for a 1.5 mile run, I would say 12 minutes is a respectable pace. That is an 8-min mile pace, which is a "running" pace. I would say a 10min 1.5 miles indicates a pretty high level of cardiovascular ability.

I've read on Runner's World that 10min/mile pace is the cut-off between a "run" and a "jog." So, if you're running 1.5 miles in 15min, you are at a jogging pace. But hell, that's good!

Also, +3 miles =

16.25

Last question first: It is probably more important what YOU think a good time for 1.5 miles would be for YOU! An average pace for a man your age in relative fitness might be 8 minutes, which would mean 12 minutes for 1.5 miles. But I am sure some real runners out there would say that you should shoot for a 6 minute mile, or 9 minutes for 1.5 miles. I find it useful to run at a comfortable pace for the distance, record my time, and then set reasonable goals to how much I want to improve. If you currently run 1.5 miles in 12 minutes, tell yourself that you want to do it in 11:30 by this time next month.

Shin splints usually go away for me if I take it easy at first, take walking breaks every 5 minutes for 1 minute or so, etc. I think that it has to do with increased circulation to the area.

And not to be a total thread jack, I don't have any mileage to contribute today, but I will measure off some distances around my new neighborhood and check back in over the weekend.

Ooooo - I love this! I did this kind of logging on the TR Forum last year and it felt great to see the miles/kms adding up!!

I wonder if, as a group we can walk 'around the world', approxmiately 24,000 miles. WillTravel, I see you started logging the group total. Can you keep us posted?

I don't have a car, so I walk everywhere. Unfair advantage, I know. Hehehe.

Today, Day 1: March 24, by 10am: 7km = 4.17 miles (I like the kms better. Looks like a lot more. )

Unlike Brilliant idiot, I have too many cars. Most run, hehe. So I have no unfair advantage. I've been needing to start walking again- so count me in. I've read walking burns more fat calories than running. And being lazy.................walking is a lot easier.

Brais,

This is a sweet program. It uses google earth to map out running routes. My friend showed this to me, it totally rocks. You can precisely measure any distances.

Oh, also!

I'm at 2.5 more km today which is another 1.5 miles, so I'm at 5.67 miles for Day 1.

Was advised by an arthopod years ago to avoid running to save my knees. But I walk... BOY do I walk! Wore a pedometer at work several years ago and averaged @ 6 miles a day (2 story auto parts store), with much lifting and carrying and stair climbing. Since becoming manager, I'm probably down to fewer than 4 miles per 9 hour day, five or six times a week. I understand that this is not all intense, heart-racing exercize, but we could really ramp up this odometer in a hurry by logging them all.
Without the pedometer, though, it's just a guess.

It's a shame I can't effectively log the amount of walking I do at work. I'm on my feet every day for eight hours, that probably adds a nice extra bit to my total.
