rough spot on foot
i have a patch on the top of my foot that is kind of hard and leathery. visually, it looks like regular skin, there isn't any discoloration or anything, but it looks a little more cracked and lined than the rest of the skin, but basically it's just tough rough leathery skin. could this just be a callus, or could it be something worse, some terrible skin disease? i only know what calluses are like on the toes or bottoms of the feet, and fingers, i don't know what they're like on the smooth flat surface on the tops of the feet, so i can't tell. i'm kinda nervous it's something like scleroderma.
if someone could just tell me that they've had something similar and it was nothing, that would be great, im a hypochondriac |

could be anything from a callus to a rash to a flesh eating virus. try wearing some diffrent shoes for a while if it dosnt start to go away in a few days go to a doctor and ask them. its just your foot not like you really need it anyway. hopping around is fun.
Most likely its nothing too bad. |

Do you rock climb? It looks like you might be about to climb in that picture. My climbing shoes are the only things I can think of that could be causing the problem, but they're really tight and I don't know if they move enough to be causing this. I can't stop wearing them to see if it goes away.

I do rock climb... but that picture is at a swimming hole in colorado... you scramble around and can jump anywhere from 10 to 80 feet down into the water...
if you think its your climbing shoes you could try one of those super super thin nylon socks, I forget what they're called maybe boot liners... or you could put a square of moleskin over the spot when your wearing those shoes... but really I would just try some lotion if your that worried about it... I would prolly just keep an eye on it and see if it gets bigger or worse or whatever I cant stand having painfully tight climbing shoes, I think something that is comfortable and well fitted is better then painfully tight... I can wear my shoes for 8+hours and they'll still be comfy... It will be a disaster when I cant get these shoes resoled anymore...

I've been wanting to ask a similar question but have never felt it deserved its own thread, so I hope you don't mind if I post mine here.
My right foot has always (for years unchanged) had dry and cracked skin on the bottom of it (from my toes to my heel). My left food though, is perfect. If there were foot models my left foot could make it. My right foot is the opposite though. In addition to the worse skin my right's nails are sort of messed up. I jokingly refer to it as my Achilles heel. It's not so bad that I've ever felt the need to consult a doctor but it's always puzzled me. I don't think it could be a fungus, because its like that no where else on my body, and I think it would have spread to my other foot by now. Nor are there any other symptoms I'm not mentioning. There's no itchyness or redness. I've had athelet's foot, its certainly not that. So is it just a freak occurence? Can anyone think of any wierd natural causes? It's been this way since I was maybe 14 or so. |

well if the nails are all cracked and yellowy and whatnot it might be a nail fungus...
maybe try walking around on cement barefoot, to help wear down the sole of your foot... if you wear shoes all the time then it may just be that your sole is too thick I go barefoot everywhere I can... and sometimes the skin around the edges of my heel will get thick and crack, not painfully. If i grind them down on the cement or with coarse sandpaper(who needs girly pumice stones ) then use a lanolin moistureizer at night it helps keep the sole skin soft and flexible so it wont be as prone to cracking the specific moistureizer i use is "Bag balm" comes in a green tin, its made for cow udders, but most drugstores have it and it works pretty well, altho it is pretty greasy

Naw no discoloration. Like I said, there's no other symptoms than the two I've mentioned. Though I should specify the nail thing is just sort of growing funny on my big toe. Like it got smashed or something, but I dont recall it getting smashed.
I go barefoot anywhere I can as well. I've tried moistureizers to no avail. It's more of a curiosity thing than a "I need to cure it" thing. Not that I would mind curing it though. |

It's not that I'm that worried about it. If it's the kind of thing that will go away with some lotion then I don't really care whether it goes away or not. I'm just worried it's something else. Actually, I'm not that worried anymore. It was just like a little panic attack because I read something about a chronic skin disorder. My climbing shoes are quite comfortable as well. I just said they were very tight because if you weren't a climber you might not understand how climbing shoes fit. I have 5.10 spires. I actually just got a new pair of 5.10 Galileos tonight, but they ARE way too tight, and I'm going to try to take them back. What kind of climbing do you do? |

well since I'm going to school in lubbock tx I'm very geographically deprived... i mean this place is FLAT
luckily the rec center here has a pretty decent climbing wall, so I try to hit it up weekly, but it tends to come and go depending on school work. When I'm at my parents place In california do a lot of stuff at the Needles and some at yosemite, and Joshua tree. We do more trad stuff and not as much sport climbing my shoes are some old Scarpas that my dad hand'd down to me... they may be old but we had a really awesome guy resole them for us and they fit better then any other climbing shoes i've worn.

Cool.
I've only ever bouldered. I just started 4 months ago. I do it mostly in a gym, which has a pretty large area devoted to bouldering. I've gone outside like 6-7 times, but it's like an hour and a half to anywhere good, and the gas ends up being pretty expensive. Plus, no one I go with is any good at spotting, so it's kind of dangerous outside. |
