At long last, here are just a few (we have a couple hundred more) of the photos we took from our trip to England. It was a honey moon of sorts! Without further ado...the pics. First up...London (of course):

Outside the British Museum. This amazing museum was free and we got a lot of great pics of some of the exhibits.

If you don't know what this is, you probably won't care. I had no idea it was real!! Didn't have time to go to Hogwart's though.

Next we went to Lewes, where I went to school 11 years ago. Included in the next batch are some pics of me at my old school with friend Richard:

Our next main stop was Warwick, where there's not a whole lot except for a big stinkin' castle!

Our next stop was in Edale. A tiny town at the south end of the Pennine Trail which leads to Scotland. This is in the heart of the Peak District which is supposed to be the most scenic part of the country. When people think of English countryside, this is it! First up, our B & B...who is that geek!?

Finally, no cultural survey would be complete without an insight into a country's cuisine. Here are some of the crazy things Brits like to eat. This was taken at a train stop in Selby:

Platform 9-3/4? That's awesome. I wonder if it's a leftover prop or what? I'm amazed that the station bureaucrats would let that remain.

The photo with the water-wheel and castle really stands out for me.

One order of beans on toast please!

Nice! I like Warwick Castle - a good place for people to stop as they travel north from London. And British Museum is a simply amazing place (but bring your own lunch, the cafeteria is pricey!)

very cool photos. Hey did you guys find it expensive? I went a few years back and am thinking of going again, but am curious as to how expensive they rooms are, and food, dining, etc!

I thought the spire you couldn't remember was St. Mary Le Bow... but I don't think that one has a clock.

I love that stone path. Is that what you hiked? Regardless it's very cool.

St. Mary le Bow has a clock, but it juts out from the side, it's not a traditional clock tower.

The image is familiar but I'm not placing it.

Short answer - yes. We ate a lot of meals that were considered "budget" and we easily spent 12 pounds for two people. We stayed with a lot of friends and family for accomodation, but one B & B we stayed in was mid-range and it was 55 pounds for the both of us.

Best thing to do is plan in advance using the Lonely Planet guidebook which we found indispensible. As far as travel, we got a couple of BritRail passes which provided us unlimited rail travel within England for 2 weeks. These can only be bought outside of England by non-citizens! They were $440 Canadian each but well worth it since we traveled all over the country. Apart from frequent rail trips into London from Crystal Palace, we pretty much made 6 major stops around the country.

Re: meals


Last time we went we bought a lot of meals at bakeries - sausage rolls and meat pies and the like. The wife and I would get some of that as takeaway and it was usually in the 5 to 6 pound range for both of us. Pretty reasonable.

Hotels - the cheapest we stayed at was a Travel Inn in Glasgow for 53 pounds, and the most expensive was the Hilton in Edinburgh for 121 pounds per night.

Next time we go we are renting a house - when 4 or more people are travelling together, it is cheaper than hotel rooms, though locations may not be in the heart of the tourist districts.

Actually I bet it's a huge tourist draw and that's why they kept it. More people = more money being spent in and around the train station, more people taking trains. All for a little sign.
