Last time we went we bought a lot of meals at bakeries - sausage rolls and meat pies and the like. The wife and I would get some of that as takeaway and it was usually in the 5 to 6 pound range for both of us. Pretty reasonable.

Hotels - the cheapest we stayed at was a Travel Inn in Glasgow for 53 pounds, and the most expensive was the Hilton in Edinburgh for 121 pounds per night.

Next time we go we are renting a house - when 4 or more people are travelling together, it is cheaper than hotel rooms, though locations may not be in the heart of the tourist districts.
