Damn! I did finish it, I'm certain! Perhaps it just didn't send before I started backtracking.

Fremen 08-21-2003 01:41 PM

A new riddle:

There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

Shpoop 08-21-2003 01:48 PM

yea ive seen this one... ill let someone else have a go

I managed to spend my whole morning on this (and half of my afternoon)... :)

startling
starting
staring
string
sting
sing
sin
in
I

And here's a new one:
Can you name 3 consecutive days without using Monday, Thursday or Sunday?

mathmo 08-22-2003 02:37 AM

What about yesterday, today, tomorrow :)

Ahh... OK than... Accepted... :D

rheemteam 08-22-2003 08:28 AM

i hope this isn't a double post

I don't think I've seen an answer to this one yet:

Quote:

"whats greater than god, more evil then the devil, poor men have it, rich men dont want it, and if you eat it you will die"
A: Nothing. Nothing is greater than god, nothing is more evil that the devil, poor men have nothing, rich men don't want nothing and if you eat nothing then you die.

And here are some more (I can't make it to the forums often, so I'll post the lot in one go):

Q: I have a heart that never beats,
I have a home but I never sleep.
I can take a mans house and build anothers,
And I love to play games with my many brothers.
I am a king among fools.
Who am I?

Q: They call me a man, but I'll never have a wife.
I was given a body, but not given life.
They made me a mouth, but didn't give me breath.
Water gives me life and sun brings me death.
What am I?

I've heard two decent answers to the above one

Q: The following number is the only one of its kind.
8,549,176,320
Can you figure out what is so special about it?

Q: What is ten men's length and ten men's strength and yet ten men cannot make it stand on its end?

Whew. That's it for me.

A snowman

cliche 08-22-2003 09:56 AM

I think the first is a card? Perhaps the king of hearts?

Not sure about the number other than it has all the digits (but so do rather a lot of others). It's not a square or a cube.

eight-five-four-nine-one-seven-six-three-two-zero

Shpoop 08-22-2003 08:32 PM

how bout this:

God never sees it. A king seldom sees it. We see it every day. What is it?

rheemteam 08-22-2003 08:41 PM

BonesCPA: Yep, or a river.

cliche: right again.

mathmo: yes.

Shpoop: Is it a father, or someone older than them? Something like that, anyway.

TIO 08-22-2003 11:11 PM

Shpop, is it an equal?

Shpoop 08-23-2003 09:22 AM

TIO got it

I'm sure the cheating at cards is the right answer but let's say he stole the 54yh bike and got shot for it.

Welcome to the thread. :)

Soda_BoB 08-29-2003 05:16 AM

Ok I got a pretty good one

There are three worms in a line moving forward

The first worm says " There are two worms behind me"

The second worm says " There are two worms infront of me"

The middle worm says " There are no worms infront ot behind of me"

Why does he say this?

mathmo 08-29-2003 06:05 AM

Re: i hope this isn't a double post

Just looking over the previous riddles, no-one seems to have suggested an answer for this one:

So, how about a rope, a tug-of-war rope perhaps???

All moving one way. Or the middle worm is stupid...maybe the soviets made him numb...

Fremen 08-30-2003 04:46 AM

The word CANDY can be spelled using just 2 letters. Can you figure out how?

rheemteam 08-30-2003 05:22 AM

mathmo:

Yes, a rope.

K & D? (sound it out)

TIO 08-30-2003 05:59 AM

Bones, I'd say it's C&Y

Soda_BoB 08-30-2003 07:46 AM

I agree with TIO

Shpoop 08-30-2003 08:46 PM

yea it is CandY

Munku 08-30-2003 09:57 PM

A man without eyes, saw plums on a tree
He did not take plums and he did not leave plums
How could this be?

Did he remember plums? See them in his mind?

TIO, Shpoop, y'all are correct. :)

Shpoop 08-31-2003 08:02 AM

ooh its something like since he had bad sight, he thought he saw plums but they were apples and he took one or something like that, right?

Xell101 08-31-2003 08:05 AM

I don't see the implication he actually did anything other than look at plums

Shpoop 08-31-2003 10:27 AM

"he did not leave plums"

The man only had one eye. As for the rest of the riddle I'm not sure. Maybe he only took some of the plums and left some others on the tree?

"Two bodies have I, though both joined in one, the stiller I stand the faster I run."

Quietus 08-31-2003 12:38 PM

Messed up post, please delete...

Xell101 08-31-2003 01:50 PM

Did he see the plums, go blind, and leave the plums alone?

Munku 08-31-2003 02:21 PM

He only had one eye. So he still could see. There were 2 plums. He took one, and left one. Therefore he didn't take nor leave plums plural.

Xell101 08-31-2003 05:26 PM

...arg, I didn't think there might be wacky grammar, drats!

Shpoop 08-31-2003 05:43 PM

yea i was gonna say that munku, but u got to it first...

as for quietus'
a nose?
or some sort of river/ straight

Quietus 08-31-2003 09:43 PM

Nope... A river kind of makes sense I guess, but not what I'm looking for.

colourmeirish 08-31-2003 11:16 PM

i wish i found this sooner!!

this is my favorite riddle. i guess microsoft asks this to potential employees, and expects them to get it in five minutes or less.

"U2" has a concert that starts in 17 minutes and they must all cross
a bridge to get there. All four men begin on the same side of the
bridge. You must help them across to the other side. It is night.

There is one flashlight. A maximum of two people can cross at one
time.

Any party who crosses, either 1 or 2 people, must have the flashlight
with them. The flashlight must be walked back and forth,
it cannot be thrown, etc. Each band member walks at a different
speed.

A pair must walk together at the rate of the slower man's pace:

Bono:- 1 minute to cross
Edge:- 2 minutes to cross
Adam:- 5 minutes to cross
Larry:-10 minutes to cross

Blistex 09-01-2003 07:29 PM

Answer to this is that U2 are a bunch of sellouts and decide to f*ck their fans and get drunk instead. Thus they don`t need to cross the bridge.

A plane is flying over enemy territory. It is in perfect working order and is maintaining a perfectly static altitude. The bomb-bay doors are opened over the target and the bombs are released, but dont fall towards their targets.

Why is this?
