Quake 4 Out Tomorrow - 10/18 (screenshots+)

This went a bit under the radar.

The godfather of FPS games - id software - (Doom3, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Quake 1-3) will be releasing the fourth installment in the Quake series, Quake4, tomorrow. You know it's going to have state-of-the-art graphics, physics and gameplay. Q4 is primarily a single player game that picks up where Quake 2 single player campaign left off. There's also multiplayer capability, described as "fast-paced, Quake3 inspired". Sounds good to me!

Nailgun is back...

Grenade Launcher

RL is back, of course (Appears to look similar to the Q2 RL)

Lightning Gun (Which I don't *think* was in Q2)

Fingers crossed.
Hope this won't require a new computer to play. :/

It's looks exactly the same as Doom3, I know it's by the same developer and it's obviously using the same engine, but they could have tried to differentiate it a bit more. I mean, the landscapes, rooms and characters/enemies all look the same, the first pic could be a Doom3 screenshot.
Having said that, it doesn't mean I won't play it!

People are saying that it's a fault for it using the Doom 3 engine, but damn, this game looks great. The graphics are still amazing, even if it is based on a somewhat old engine. I've never been a fan of the Quake games so I'll probably skip it. I did enjoy Quake 2 on PS1 though.

I don't know man, overall I just get the feeling that this will be "just another FPS." The gameplay hasn't been updated, it's a recycled story, and the graphics are almost identical to Doom3. I mean, yes, it looks good. The graphics are pretty. But that's about all I see that it has going for it. Who knows, maybe it will be awesome.

Hmmm...I didn't know it used the Doom3 engine (guess it was obvious by the looks :/). Everything is so dark and muddy in D3, and I prefer the crisper graphics/physics of Q3. I guess the same engine means the same mediocre performance on my computer.

I hope this isn't an afterthought title, or just an expanded Doom3 multiplayer title with a crappy single player campaign thrown in for sales. Not happy about the D3 engine, but who knows. It is Id Software...they've made some pretty good games in the past.

I loved Quake 2. Wasn't too thrilled with Q3. I'm sure I'll buy Q4 but I'm going to hold off a while and read some reviews. I bought Doom 3 and only played it for about ten minutes. I don't know why.

ID Software has let me down alot recently, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a downer, Doom 3 was extremely bad and Quake 3 Arena was the worst of the series. I think I'll let my friends buy it first and let me know what they thought of it.

Plus, where the hell is the BFG?? You can't have quake without it!

Meh.

I'll probably skip it, or wait until it goes down to like $10. I don't really feel like spending the money for 10 hours of gameplay when it doesn't look very good.

Actually this latest installment of Quake was created primarily by a team called Raven Software, whom iD lent assistance to in updating and working closely with the D3 engine. Raven were the first guys to get thier hands on it, and its been revamped to better handle racey multiplayer, large areas and large numbers of players/monsters. It's supposed to be more like the older quake experiences, more "frantic", not like the Doom 3 *walk walk walk -monster- walk walk -two monsters- walk walk -big monster-*

To Lasereth: "somewhat old engine"? *raises eyebrow* they dont come much newer... (except the hardcore pixelshader engines like U3E... fuck that, I'd rather the game ran)

To feelgood: Return to Wolfenstein wasn't an iD effort either. As for Quake 3 being the worst.... that game was the apex of deathmatch, clearly you're not a deathmatcher.

I defintely agree. I prefer Q3 Deathmatch/CTF to any of the others, Counterstrike, Unreal Tournament, Painkiller, etc...

I figured someone would ask about that. I meant that instead of creating a new engine for the game, they simply used an engine that was already completely built and proven to run. Some people are criticizing the developers for not using their own engine...I think it looks and plays fine. I guess it's up to the developers to add more to the game than what Doom 3 had (really nice atmosphere).

I'm a diehard Quake series fan but I'm not too excited about this. First, I think Quake 2 was the worst of the series (relative to two other great games), and Q4 is based on it. Second, it does look exactly like Doom 3, which translates into drab aesthetics and a low frame rate (on my box.) Whenever I play RA3 people are saying "I can't wait for Q4," but I have a hard time seeing how this game could improve upon the perfected deathmatch of CPMA/RA3, or even good ol' QuakeWorld.

Yeah I cannot see my self buying this untill its at least 15 bucks.

It looks no different then Doom3, and that game was far from impressive other then the random scares it did.

Dark gloomy graphics is just not appealing to me.

You know, I'm not looking forward to this game at all... The quake series kind of revolutionized the FPS genre with each game that came out, especially quake 1. It kind of makes me sad to see that the title of quake is cheapened by some game that uses the doom3 engine...

PC Gamer had a review of it in their latest issue. If you are looking for a single player experience, they said it can be finished in 10 hours, that includes exploring and dying a bunch against the final boss. I'm gonna pass and wait for it to hit the bargain bin, besides F.E.A.R. comes out this week (21st I think)..

Finished the first 2 levels.

First impression: It's not QUAKE 4. It's DOOM 4.

I can't make out any perceivable resemblance to the Quake series at all. It's completely DOOM3'ed out. As far as I'm concerned, it's a DOOM3 expansion pack. Dark, muddy and console-like. Needless to say, I'm disappointed. They need to scrap this engine ASAP and start from scratch.

Well, it's not all bad. At least they integrated a flashlight into the weapons.

I spoke too soon.

Flashlight is only integrated into 2 guns so far (blaster & machine gun). If you're using the shotgun and switch on the flashlight, it switches to the machine gun with the flashlight on. Unbelievable. So the shotgun doesn't have a light...back to creeeping around in the dark.

Plus, I've found 2 instances of overlighted texture polygons, ie. in a location where the entire floor is the same homogenous dark texture in a dark room, there is one bright polygon with a super high brightness value. So there's this large, retarded white patch in the middle of a dark floor. I used to make maps myself, and this is a mapmaking 101 issue. While looking through the (shitty) manual, there's at least 20 people credited as map testers, and they all missed this? How???

The blame for all this lies squarely at the feet of Id Software. Raven has developed games for Id before, and they've rocked. This isn't Raven's fault, it's the shit engine. Id Software no longer makes great pc games, they've sold out to the console market. The "feel" of the old Id games - what made them so great - is gone from their pc games.

Oh, and you can't turn off the music.

OK, done ranting.

I saw Q4 at BestBuy today. On PC-CDROM for $49.99 or DVD for $59.99! An extra ten bucks for the DVD version, unbelievable! All games should be on DVD at no additional cost. Screw it. I bought Serious Sam 2 for $30. I'll buy Q4 when it's less than $30 for the DVD.

The DVD version comes with Quake 2 and the Quake 2 expansion packs - so it's not "just" 10$ for the DVD. I regularily read Shacknews and there were a lot of people who liked it, and also people who didn't like it. It looks like it's not one of those games that you can half-like (for better or worse).

Gotcha maybe these folks will follow suit of HL2 and recreate all the old maps with the new engine. I can only hope.

If not Raven, then I'm sure that someone in the community probably will. After all, there was a project (I lost track of completion) of porting Doom to the Doom 3 engine, and they were doing a pretty good job from last I heard.

Ok I've played it for an hour or so and I just feel like voices some thoughts.
1. The cartoonish weapon icons they brought in from Q3 don't fit well.
2. I like the fact they hide weapons and items out of view like Q2
3. Bringing back some characters from Q2 and updating them is cool.
4. Having people hand you new weapons instead of you finding them is not as fun.
5. I don't know what other people are thinking, the only thing this game has in common with Doom3 is the engine. Sure everything is going to look similar because of that fact.
6. I think the recommended requirements are overrated. I'm playing above what they recommend for my computer and it runs great.
7. So far I'm enjoying it, it definately keeps with the spirit of Q2 (though sometimes you forget you are playing a quake game, not gritty enough), and in my mind that's a good thing.

Something doesn't make sense here. Are you really surprised that Quake 4 is running greatwhen your comp is above the reccomended requirements or did you mean to type something else?

I'd imagine something along the lines of the game recommended a lower quality, and he's using something higher

Yes, I had to read it twice.

The game scans your system and sets the quality and resolution accordingly. I raised those settings above what it reccomended, and it still runs great.

I'm probably about 3/4 through the game, and I have to say I like it better than Doom3.

2 reasons: first, the weapons are all very impressive and fun to use; they look/sound/feel great, and second, the gameplay is way more varied and interesting. Yes, walking into rooms still triggers stuff to appear from nowhere, but rooms seem bigger, there always seem to be places to take cover in firefights, and there are actually some pretty fun long-range indoor/outdoor battles, where the railgun/rocket launcher/nailgun come in useful.

So, not bad. I still think the graphics are goofy and cartoonish, but...not bad.
