Games you've recently purchased/played

The entertainment has a thread going where users post their review or rating of the last movie users last watched. So, I figured I'll start up a similar thread for games (Xbox, PS2, PC, PSP, Gameboy, Game Cube, etc)

So, here goes:

Silent Hunter III

3/10

This game didn't get good rating from me b/c I didn't have enough patience to put up with this extremely realistic simulation. The AI is a little dumb, they had to constantly wait for my orders and there wasn't an option somewhere where I could automatic orders. The visuals are stunning, I'll give them points for that. I returned the game anyways.

Half Life 2

10/10

This is, without a doubt, one of the best game I've ever played. It even beats my expectation and even took my attention away from Halo 2 for a change. The graphics are stunning, the single player has great replay value, and the multiplayer is awesome. What more could I ask from a game?

Doom 3

7/10

It's not a bad game, it's not a great game. The single player has little replay value. Multiplayer sucks, I jumped into a CTF game for 5 min and I dropped out of it cuz I found it to be too similar to Quake 2. In fact, this game reminds me entirely of 2005's version of Quake 2. There's nothing new here. The game even has BFG (Big Fucking Gun) which was originally came from Quake 2. Activision needs to come up with something new like Half Life 2 did. I returned the game as well.

Rome: Total War

9/10

Awesome stragety game. It's similar to Civilization 3 (Best game ever) only this time, you can actually zoom in to command your armies in battles. If that's not your preferences, you can simply have the battle automatically resolved. You can also manage each region, your empire and each cities. You can move your armies around, build buildings. It's like Age of Empires and Civilization 3 put together.

Halo 2

8/10

The visuals are stunning and there is a great story line. But it kinda gets boring after awhile when you're doing nothing but shooting, running over alien baddies with your vehicles. It would be great if there were puzzles or problesm to resolve. The thing that sucks about the game that there's too many zombies, especially little critters. Half life 2 has those but it doesn't over-do it as Halo series does. I haven't had the chance to play multiplayer at all, so I can't comment on that much. It's obvious that Halo 3 is going to be coming out and I'm definately am going to buy it since I want to see the end of the story.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2

9/10

Excellent role playing game. It's a pretty long game and I've already played it 4 or 5 times already. I'm not much of a RPG fan before I purchased KOTOR and now, I'm looking out for RPG games. The game also lets you manage your characters extensively, including what skills to learn, what items to wear, use, purchase or sell. It'll be great if the next game in the series will be something of MMORPG

Mercenaries

8/10

Take GTA: Miami and Military hardware together and what do you get? That's right, Mercenaries. The game has excellent replay value, it lets me run around and blow shits up without having to worry about missions. The visuals are great, music sucks, did I mention you could blow shits up? Even with tanks? Helicopters? Artillery?

Coppertop 05-13-2005 10:21 AM

Guild Wars
Great game so far. Only about 3 hours into it. What the fuck is up with a max party size of 2 at the beginning?

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Very good single player campaign. Much wittier dialogue this time around. Co-op multiplay is buggy as fuck.

Jade Empire

Another great from Bioware. Loved every minute of it.

Advance Wars 2

Excellent way to spend the workday.

Lego Star Wars
Fun game all around. Great to play with a friend. Lots of replayability value.

Games I am too broke to afford right now but will post reviews of when I can:

Brothers in Arms
Stronghold 2
World at War
Dungeon Lords

WoW - 8 / 10
Mega Man X8 - 9 / 10

And thats it in the last 6 months I'd say. Pretty sad, but its just to hard to be a gamer as a senior in college.

FXRS 05-13-2005 01:50 PM

Never really got into console games. PC games I play are pretty limited.

I did play Half Life2 and found it very enjoyable. Fustrating at times but fun.

I fly alot of Microsoft Flight Sim.

My favorite though is Nascar Racing Series from Sierra/Papyrus. Raced in several online leagues. Raced against Dale Jr. and others several times.

hulk 05-13-2005 05:41 PM

RE4 still has me by the balls, I love it. 100/10.
Metroid Prime 2 is begging for me to play again, as well.

sub zero 05-15-2005 08:01 AM

I have been playing FFXI alot and aside from what most people say, it really is a very solid MMORPG. So much to do and see you just gotta get yourself into the game.
Bought Bleach Video Game for my PSP. Seeing as how I am a fan of the series it is kinda biased to say that I like the game. Its good because its quick, easy to pick up, and can be challeneging to play. The problems are that there are only 6 characters to choose from and unless you know how to read kana, you won't have any idea whats going on in the story mode. Still its a great buy if you like the series or heavily anime influenced games.

NeverBorn 05-15-2005 12:45 PM

Psychonauts..loved it

Bacchanal 05-15-2005 06:53 PM

I almost exclusively play on my PS2, though I also own an Xbox and (obviously) a computer, I've just never really got into those games.

Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition - I bought this game strictly because of a thread here, and was not disappointed one bit until I'd beat everything. Now there isn't much to do except race races that I'm almost guaranteed to win. It was extremely fun, but a bit too short.

I'm always, always, always plating Socom 2 online. This game never gets old, as gameplay changes everytime you play. The very best, and most fun game I've ever played, just as far as the online play goes. I've played a couple missions in the regular mode, but it isn't nearly as fun to me.

mercanaries and cold fear im playing at the minute

Eight 05-16-2005 04:48 AM

Joint op's - 9/10 Best Multiplayer FPS out there for me :). For big scale warfare is great. Even with the bugs.

Battle for Middle earth 6/10 Nice looking RTS but is very repetitive. They could have added a few more units. You can complete each map (well apart from one or 3) by using the same plan.

I'd like to see that on the cover of of the budget priced re-release. :D

I'd also have to agree with the rest of your review.

American McGee Presents: Scrapland

Awesome game. Just what I needed. A fun, happy, beautiful looking game for $4.99.

8.5/10

Derwood 05-17-2005 05:34 AM

I just got Halo and Halo2 as gifts.

I'm only on level 3 of Halo, and maybe I suck at FPS, but DAMN is this a pain. The infrequency of save points is extremely frustrating, especially if you happen to hit a save point with very little energy or ammo, and are stuck restarting that section over and over in that state. Too many Elites in the early levels, especially where I am, when one well thrown plasma grenade is the end of the level for you.

Nancy 05-17-2005 05:51 AM

I finally got my hands on Super Mario Kart from England *jumps with joy* :D

MexicanOnABike 05-23-2005 02:37 PM

right now, i'm playing BURNOUT 3:TAKEDOWN.
i must say it's super fun!
it's a racing game but not too realistic. this is arcade.. the fun part is the crashing: you race and everytime you make someone crash, you get burnout(nitro/nos) and in the Crash mode, you must crash into trafic and cause the most damage(it's not random or luck... you actualy control the car when its crashing).
it's also pretty long for a game! the multi player is awesome.(i didnnt try online yet)

burnout3: takedown (ps2)
graphics: 9
replayability: 9 (theres over 173 race)
sounds: 9 (music is greaT!)
total: 9 out 10

MexicanOnABike 05-23-2005 02:49 PM

second game i got for the ps2 was Amplitude.
it's the sequel to Frequency(a game i never played). it's a simple puzzle(arcade) game where you drive a spaceship in a tunnel. in the tunnel, theres a bunch of tracks with nodes on them. you must shoot the nodes at the right time to activate the track. once you activate the track, you move on to the next one. simple? now the tracks are music tracks.. . so you get a drum, vocal, guitar, bass, etc... tracks and you play to a specific song. so the level will last about 4min. depending on the dif.level, you'll get more nods on each tracks. if you miss a nod, you loose that sequence and you must change tracks or wait for the sequence to end before starting again... once you beat a few levs, you get powerups on the tracks taht do a bunch of stuff like 2x, freestyle, etc.. theres more to it but thats the basics of it... i musta played that game for 10hrs strait when i got it!! it's the best arcade/puzzle game i played in my life. (altough some of you might not like it... it does get repetitive)

Amplitude(ps2)
graphics: 9 (they're as nice as can be for a puzzle game!)
replayability: 10 (it's as addictive as tetris)
sounds: 10 (it's based on music.. and it's awesome music)
total: 9.7 out 10

MexicanOnABike 05-23-2005 02:52 PM

it's too bad that theres not a way to just connect a keyboard and a mouse to the ps2 cuz it woulda made GTA:san andreas way better!!
my gf bought me this game so i tried it.... i was very dissapointed. the control setting sucks for the game. so i cant give it a good review. just that i will get it on the PC.

san andreas(ps2)
controls: 2
overall gameplay: probably a 10
total: 6
:|

MexicanOnABike 05-23-2005 02:54 PM

supermonkey ball deluxe (ps2)
graphics: 7.5 (allright for the ps2... coulda been better)
replayability: 9 (with all the levs and the minigame, you could play forever)
sounds: 6 (too childish and some sounds are downright anoying)
total: 7.5 out 10
:)

RogueHunter65 05-23-2005 02:57 PM

I just played Guild Wars yesterday. I thought it was okay

Id give it an 6.5 out of 10

It got a lower score because it didnt really have anything new to offer. It was just like any MMORPG. Also, it didnt have many races or classes. The game is very quest oriented and you can only get skills through doing those quests.

I will say that it was cool that you could just click on a city to travel to it, cuts down on the running around time.

Its not bad, but not that good either

Derwood 05-23-2005 06:52 PM

I just picked up some Game Cube games for my brother-in-law at a garage sale. $3 each. Got him LOTR: The Two Towers, Gauntlet Dark Something (?) and Pokemon Colisseum. Don't know if they are any good, but 3 for $9 was worth the gamble.

irateplatypus 05-23-2005 09:14 PM

only a quarter the way through it, but...

Resident Evil 4 for good ol' Gamecube is pretty amazing.

i've tried to get into this genre before... but RE4 is the first one that has fully integrated the GAMEPLAY with the presentation/atmosphere. the graphics are amazing and such that cutscenes are brief and excecuted on the fly. the audio is great: not much in the way of music... but the sound effects are top-notch. the continuity of the gameplay (versus just working your way from cut-scene to cut-scene) coupled with the ridiculously polished audio/video presentation makes for an engrossing experience.

i'll catch myself leaning forward or wincing in anticipation of the crazy thing that surely must be around the corner. anyone who knows me would say this is very unplatypus-like... so i think that is a testament to the game itself.

control is the only glaring shortcoming. there is no reason not to have analog movement in this day and age. it's baffling why capcom chose to incorporate digital character movement over an analog input device. you get used to it... eventually. certainly could be improved.

10/10 in sub-areas such as storyline, graphics, sound fx...

9/10 overall for this unbelievable game. goes right alongside metroid prime, wind waker and soul calibur for must-have titles.

Robaggio 05-23-2005 09:33 PM

HL2: 10/10
Metal Gear Solid 3: 10/10
Halo 2: 3/10

Latest Resident Evil for Gamecube: 9/10
Guild Wars: 6/10

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: 2/10
Jade Empire: 6/10

CandyLover 05-25-2005 05:43 AM

Everquest 2 9/10
I like everything about this game. Good challange. Good Graphics. Great game play. Only flaw i didnt appreciate to much is theres nothing in the at all u can do alone you have to have a group for everything. gets kind of aggravating at times.

Scorps 05-25-2005 09:08 AM

Need For Speed :Underground

10/10

I love it so much I have bet it like 4 times but I use different cars everytime. and I can keep playing it:)

Lunatic 05-25-2005 11:48 AM

Guild Wars 8/10
I really love this game and best of all its free, Im really looking foward to the company updating it with newer worlds and stuff, Cause this game is very fun.

shadowalker 05-26-2005 07:15 PM

I just picked up Far Cry for 5 bucks USD in a clearance bin. I'm sure you all have checked it out so i'll just give it a 9/10 sence i'm only on the frist lvl still.

DukeNukem4ever 05-26-2005 08:08 PM

Morrowind GOTYE (with only the best mods installed)

FreeLancer (once again, with only the best of mods installed)

Whenever I get bored with them I just download a new mod and I'm good to go!

Church 05-26-2005 08:25 PM

I just broke down and picked up Zelda Windwaker on recommendation by many friends. I must say, its a great game. I'm a little stuck, but I'm sure if I sit down I can get past this part no problem, lol.

8.5/10

bookerV 05-27-2005 05:55 AM

I picked up Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory, and I must say it is a VERY sweet game. If you are into the stealth action games this one is a must. I'm not usually into this type of game too often, but this one has definitely drawn me in.

9/10.

Cuatela 05-27-2005 12:43 PM

Just got Air Force Delta Strike for $8.35 from EBG. Fairly nice, although I think I like Ace Combat 5's gameplay and menu better. People and dialogue is a nice difference though, as well as the option to choose different pilots.

Aladdin Sane 05-28-2005 06:32 PM

I bought Pirates! and that was a big mistake. BORING. 2/10
HL 2 8/10
I've been thinking about buying Splinter Cell : Chaos Theory.

guthmund 05-31-2005 08:11 PM

Funny you should mention Chaos Theory.

I just bought it today and the game is fan-friggin-tastic.

It's just so pretty. The AI is a lot smarter than in the previous incarnations and the little things they added (like the knife and all the cool things to do with the knife :) ) make this like a whole new game for me.

I've yet to delve too deeply into the co-op mode, but what I have seen is spectacular.

Definately 10/10. The best game to come out on the X-box in the six months.

I delve the bargain bins and pawn shops, no doubt about it. All these games ran me $40 all together.

#2 - Morrowind : Elder scrolls something...something.. (I don't have it sitting in front of me) Kind of a hassle getting started, but pretty cool nonetheless. As I understand it the more you put in the more you get out. I haven't put much in, so, I can't say. So, I'll stick it with a 6/10.

#3 Simpsons : Hit and Run. Pawnshop beauty at $10 and it's certainly worth it. The dialogue is very, very funny and all the inside jokes are a big treat for me as I'm a big Simpsons fan. It's just too cool driving Mr. Plow around and bashing....well, everything. The driving is fun, but kind of glitchy....so, 8/10

#4 Medal of Honor : Rising Sun. I bought it for the gamecube because it was getting lonely. The co-op was a nice change as I don't see it too often. Fun to play through once or twice, but the controls were awkward and the level design was....well, it wasn't all that good. I got lost in a shack in the Phillipines for 20 minutes because I couldn't find my way out the poorly lit maze. Not to mention all the extra stuff, which was hard to find and really didn't pay off...at all. 4/10

#5 Last but not least, Fable. Kind of a cool idea and fun to play through, but it gets pretty tiresome playing through it more than once. I mean, I do the same stuff if I'm a great hero or an evil slug and it matters not a bit. It's a very pretty game and could have been really good, but it just didn't sit all that well with me even though it's spectacularly pretty. Good idea, just poorly implemented. 7/10

t3m3st 05-31-2005 09:28 PM

I just got my vacation pay and spent it at EB. Here's the rundown:

Tekken 5 for PS2

By no means perfect, it's a great improvement on 4. The got rid of all of 4's flaws, and it feels like a sequal to Tekken 3. It has the visual look and feel of Tekken 3, which is one of my all time fav games. Also, it has Tekken 1, 2 and 3, so bonus. The new single player platform toss-in, Devil Within, feels like a rush job with repetitive tasks and textures that make every level seems the same. The arcade mode is fun, and lets you compete against computer controlled opponents of different skill levels, as you fight to raise your rank and to raise money to buy extras. My big complaint is that the final boss is just too unballanced. He can kill you in 3 unblockable and often unavoidable hits. "But so can alot of characters", you say? He does it on easy mode.
This game though, is great in arcade mode, and though it has it's flaws, these will probably be the best graphics we'll see on PS2. The good REALLY outweighs the bad.

I'll give it 8/10

Rebel Assault 2: Rouge Leader for GCN

I've been waiting for the used price on this game to drop since I bought my cube in 2002. I finally forked over the $20 and picked it up (damn I'm cheap) and I enjoyed it alot. I had bought RA3 on release, and hated it. This was the game I should have bought. If just for the first level, the Battle of Yavin, this game is worth it for a Star Wars fan. If you like this sort of thing. I've got friends who are fans of XvT who hate Rebel Assault with a passion.

I'll give this 8/10 too.

Guild Wars

I love it. Everything I hated about p2p mmo's is fixed here. Sometimes I forget though that if I'm out questing, my friends can't just walk out and play with me.

I'm gonna say 8/10 here too... broken record much?

Metal Gear Solid 3 for PS2

Waited for this game for so long. Bought it copied, but there's a problem with my chipped ps2, so i can't play copies. Guy that was gonna fix it for me got shut down, so I finally bought MGS3. I haven't played it yet because I'm too lazy to get up and take Tekken out. Nice box art though. I'll give the box art 8/10 for the hell of it.

RubenBaraja 06-01-2005 09:35 AM

Just started Oddworld Strangers Wrath.

Any thoughts on this? Looks okay from what I have played however I am still only upto the Tutorials.

CBlend 06-01-2005 02:37 PM

Yoshi Touch and Go ----> 9/10
Wario Ware: Twisted! ----> 8/10
Resident Evil 4 ----> 10/10

All three are awesome!

lpj8 06-01-2005 08:19 PM

Finally got around to play Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
It starts out pretty slow, but after the first chapter, it picks up, and has some great subplots with a ton of humor.
The gameplay is fun, and leveling your players up is very satisfying. Its also rather long, and provides a great challenge.
I'd give it a 9 out of 10

hulk 06-03-2005 03:17 AM

Donkey Konga! I have two sets of bongos, got both the Jungle Beat and Donkey Konga packs. And goddamn, it's fun! Go buy now!

Slayer 06-03-2005 10:47 AM

Jade Empire. The game amazing with a great battle system and graphic.

Half Life 2. Finally got the game. I Had been playing counterstike source non stop lol.

Strelich 06-04-2005 10:03 PM

Silent Hunter III. I'm a hardcore sim fanatic, and CAOTD (Aces of the Deep: Command Edition) is an old favorite of mine. If I had any complaints, it would be the concessions made in modelling ship physics and AI in general. (The uber acceleration of all ships, the magic stabilization of the main and flak guns under AI control, or the empty ports.) Graphics are excellent, and the mechanics are solid. It's somewhat moddable, though some issues as mentioned before can only be fixed by the dev team. I'd say an 8.5/10, given that.

Lock On:MAC - Flaming Cliffs - As much as I was a fan of Flanker 2.5, I must admit that I wasn't that keen on this sim, maybe because it seemed like it was more of a flight simulator (among the best fidelity flight models in any sim out there) than an all around combat simulation. The graphics are nice, though the sim is very CPU intensive. In other words, other than the best systems out there, 'stutters ahoy'. The AI for aircraft are limited and predictable, and the avionics systems for the US aircraft are somewhat simplified. However, I'm an avid fan of Falcon 4 and all the mods for it, so it is a step back in many ways. I would say 6/10.

Both sims are from Ubisoft, which is pretty much the only remaining major publishing company willing to release simulations. Suffice it to say, given console dominance and development costs/times, it's a big risk only Ubisoft has taken.

SWAT 4: I haven't played it much, the enemy targeting AI is to me a little too good. That, coupled with the rather strict rules of engagement (only in that the game can be rather twitchy in excessive force and declaring compliance in sudden gunfights) means they hose down half your team in a doorway before the team returns fire). However, it's a pretty tight package all around, which modding communities are working in lieu of a SDK. All three games listed here have SDKs in the works. 7/10.

Catdaddy33 06-07-2005 04:59 AM

I picked up Far Cry for 10 bucks in the bargain bin, and is a blast to play. Considering its a yr+ old looks great even comparied to Doom 3/HL 2.

akito 06-07-2005 07:28 PM

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

This game is one of the best games on my machine right now. I've always been a fan of the splinter cell games, and this just makes it so much better. The single player campaign is amazing, and jumping online is equal amounts of fun. Online play used to be very VERY buggy, as in you couldn't play a coop game for more than a couple seconds, but it seems that they've fixed that with this latest patch, and now I find myself playing this game more than anything else almost.

9/10 akito-points for this title!

Half-Life 2

Best.Game.Ever.

11/10 akito-points for this. That extra bonus point is because Counter-strike: Source came with it. :P

SSG505 06-07-2005 08:26 PM

Brother In Arms: Road to Hill 30

Best game i've ever played in my life. I beat it on normal then difficult and about 1/3 of the way through on authentic. The game just sucks you in like nothing i've ever played before.

10/10

Jade Empire

Cool game but a little on the easy side. Camera was kinda iffy in certain areas but I loved the diffrent styles to choose from.

8/10

bookerV 06-20-2005 08:49 AM

Xbox
Crimson Skies: 6.5 / 10 Mindless repetitive fun. Decent story so far though.

Jade Empire: 9.5 / 10 This is just the type of game that I have been craving for the last little while. I am only about 1/4 of the way through the game but so far I am loving it, and I am already planning to replay it through as soon as I am done. I have heard that it is too short though, which is too bad. This is a great console RPG though, despite its length.

Fallen 06-20-2005 08:59 AM

Advent Rising

wdevauld 06-20-2005 02:03 PM

Most recently:

Xbox: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Rock Star has done it again
PC: Sid Meier's Pirates. Remake of an old classic. Kinda a cross genre RPG/strategy/arcade. Very good game except that Pirates don't dance. Yarrrr.....

Bacchanal 06-20-2005 02:54 PM

I just got God of War the other day, and I'm loving it. I think I'll go get Destroy All Humans tomorrow, it looks quite fun.

I got NFL Street 2 a couple weeks ago, and I wish I hadn't. It isn't nearly as fun as I thought it would be.

pacaveli 06-20-2005 04:58 PM

for the PS2, i bought x men legends and im loving that

and i got area 51 and i just got into online play cause im not big on FPS stories cause they're boaring and pointless, online play is fun though

heccubusiv 06-21-2005 03:08 PM

Batman Begins, too short of a game and seemed to be the same thing over and over again but traps were cool.. and the bat mobile was sweet... worth renting and beating in a weekend

I just purchased NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005. It doesn't have the killer graphics these other games do, but for people like me who are suffering from a missed NHL season, this is the next best thing.

Slavakion 06-22-2005 11:48 AM

Sinistar. By far one of the best old-school arcade games.

MexicanOnABike 06-26-2005 08:28 PM

i just got into my DavemirraProBMX2... and well it's a fun game. i'm just getting used to the controls so it's cool. 8/10.

CS Source.. 9.5/10

Guild Wars 6/10 (I liked WoW's community better more social interaction..you get to know your server more)

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident 9/10

I heartily approve of this game. A real time space combat simulator with fully 3-d environment with battle reminscent of Babylon 5. The game looks great but unfortunately buggy, nearly all come from woefully suboptimal system configs, the rest come specific and easily work aroundable causes. I hit one and it took me less than three minutes to get around once I checked the game forums. The best aspect of the game is the difficulty. The top difficulty setting is nearly unbeatable due to well performing AI, not ships with 300% health or other cheats. Actually strategy is required once you're above minimum difficulty, it's great. I'd give it a ten, but yeah, bugs.

As I mentioned earlier, I got Destroy All Humans, and it's fun. I've only played it for about half an hour though, since one of my friends really wants to play it too (and I'm still playing God Of War). It has a bit of comedy in it that had me chuckling, but the controls are something to get used to.

I bought 'Destroy All Humans' yesterday and had good go at it last night.

First immpressions were that it looks and feels a lot like the Tony Hawk games without the skateboard. That's not necessarily a bad thing though, I think this game will really come into it's own once I get the hang of the controls.

Probably the second funniest game I've played this year, after LEGO Star Wars.

If I had to rate it now I'd give it... mmm... 7 out of 10.

#EDIT# After playing from start to finish I'd rate it at 4.5 out of 10.

guthmund 07-05-2005 06:14 AM

Well, I picked up two more...

1- Jade Empire. Absolutely fabulous game. I would expect nothing less from the crew that gave us Knights of the Old Republic. It is a bit short, but the replayability (is that even a word?) makes up for that a bit. I definately like the way they handled the style sets and modifiers. I was disappointed that you couldn't customize the actual character (weapons, clothing/armor that sort of thing). At the very least, I wouldn't have been so disappointed if they had let you choose a distinct face for your character. All that aside, it's a very pretty game, the story is actually pretty good and the fighting stuff is outstanding. It's just too short and a little bare boned. I'm going to give it a 7/10.

2- Pariah - This game gives me a headache. First off, it's ridiculously hard. Now, I'm a big...big Halo fan and although I might not be the top of the charts, I'm certainly no slouch. This game is hard. I don't know what it is, but you literally have to be right up on top of the enemy to shoot them properly with just your standard run of the mill kind of gun. Even then you can unload a full clip of ammo at the bad guy, blood and guts spraying wildly, and he'll still be standing. The levels are a bit atrocious and a lot of them consist of running wildly to one side of the map, flick a switch, run wildly to the other side of the map while killing a whole bunch of bad guys that seem to come out of nowhere. Now, the story is pretty good, so far, and the vehicles are fun to drive, so it's not all bad. And the weapons are nice and you can toggle a 'god code' with the cheat menu, but it just isn't enough. I give it a 5/10.

Ripsaw 07-05-2005 07:52 AM

1 - God of War. Working on finishing hard mode to perfect my combos and parrying before I try God Mode. Halfway through. Finished the challenge of the gods to unlock the costumes.

2 - Cracked open FFVII again. I never finished it, time to see what happens at the end.

Half-Life 2

I got HL2 the day it arrived at EB Games.

Everything about it far surpassed my wildest expectations. (And those were set pretty high to start with.)

6 out of 5

Burnout 2

I got the directors cut for currency. (cant complain)

5 out of 5

Kirby: Canvas Curse

This was probably the best DS game i've played in a while.

5 out of 5

Simpson's Hit and Run

Pretty good, but it was a complete spin-off of GTA

4 out of 5

Half-Life PS2

MURDERED THE GAME. The singular point was for the title Half-Life.

Resident evil: code veronica X [ps2]

[bought it used for $9]

So far, game reminds me a lot of alone in the dark. It's somewhat difficult, and the opportunities to save are somewhat sparse, which kind of frustrates me. This forces me to play for an hour or so at a time, so I don't have to constantly redo parts over and over again. The camera isn't the best, but I heard that's it's actually for the better.

Too early to rate it.

RubenBaraja 07-08-2005 03:31 PM

Finally started playing Top Spin on the Xbox due to post Wimbledon excitement.

Found it quite easy at the moment and am currently ranked 10.

Looking forward to the sequel which I am sure was announced at E3

Picked up another a few days ago...

X-Men: Legends -- Fun stuff. I've been playing co-op with my nephew and we've been having a blast. Some of the missions have been a bit off kilter and it's kind of difficult in the beginning until you find the right tactics against the onslaught of enemies.

It's kind of fun to whoop ass with a whole litany of X-men and the addition of some of the voices from the actual movie....well, that just makes my day.

At $20.00, I don't see any reason why you wouldn't pick up this game and give it a go.

The menus are a bit difficult to manuever through and some of the character additions seem...well, it seems they didn't put as much thought into some of the second tier characters as they did the top tier, but that's okay, I don't use them all regularly anyway.

8/10

Gatorade Frost 07-10-2005 10:09 PM

Latest game I bought was World of Warcraft, which I bought a week or two ago. Otherwise I'll buy a game once every six months or so.

I give it a 3/5. At first it was a 4/5, then I started getting into it, then I hit lvl 12, and then biff.... down to 1/5 since I practically had to grind through 5 levels to be able to beat anything succesfully without getting my n00bs p00ned off. Then level 20 comes around, I enjoy it a little bit, but now that I'm there it's lost its thrill. So that may be the end of my World of Warcraft playing.

Pacific Fighters (+ Forgotten Battles + Aces Expansion Pack)

BEST GAME EVER. WWII flight sim with about a billion flyable planes and realistic (enough - don't visit their forums and talk about realism though... sheesh) flight model. Good range of online play options from arcade-tastic to I-wish-I-were-the-love-child-of-Biggles-and-Hermann-Goering-real. I get a little upset that shipping doesn't try and dodge torpedoes though.

MS Flight Sim 2004
Lock On: Modern Air Combat
X-Plane

Detecting a theme?

Rome: Total War

And Medieval Total War. Best RTS/turn based strategy game there is (with the exception of Harpoon). I still feel happy remembering the time I crushed Gengis Khan's entire army in a single epic battle. I was so proud of my brave little soldiers.

Half Life 2

When I want to shoot people in the face without a cockpit windshield in the way. Great pretties, good atmosphere (though the canals were a little tiresome), and reasonable plot.

SF CAVE!!!!!

BEST GAME EVER AS WELL, APART FROM ALL THE OTHER GAMES BETTER THAN IT. Best score: 3795.

ratchet and clank: up your arsenal

i could just be a dork but i love the ratchet and clank series. a tad longer than the second game but also a tad easier (and no races or outer space fights)
overall id say 7.5/10

Prince of Persia 2 : Warrior Within

I've never played these games before despite all the good things I had heard about this one and the previous Prince of Persia.

This game is hard even with the difficulty set on 'easy'. I'm new to the series, I've got no experience with the controls and 5 minutes into the game they throw the first mini-boss at me. None of the moves that the tutorial have mentioned up to this point work against this gal. I eventually beat her by running towards her and rapidly tapping different combinations of buttons at random. No skill involved.

The camera sucks. Any allusion the game makes to 'camera control' is laughable because it just ain't there. The camera angles in the game are irritating, which makes some of the challenges near impossible to do. The save points are few and far between. Not to mention oddly placed. I mean, I would imagine the ideal position for them would be right before big boss fights or after a particularly difficult stretch of puzzles, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

And the map...what map? it's a pretty picture that colors itself in as you explore each area. It doesn't begin to help with navigating the ginormous world I find myself stuck in. I've spent the vast majority of my time in the game just wandering around.

I really want to really like this game. I think the story is fantastic so far and despite the clunky controls, once you get the hang of it, it's really kind of satisfying to slice someone down the middle or pop their head off. Not to mention the really cool stuff you can do (slide down curtains, run along walls, climb...anything.) It's just not enough to off set the irritating camera, the ridiculously difficult bosses or the aimless wandering because you're not sure where to go.

Guild Wars

Played for about 10 mins and really have not got a clue what is going on.

Looks like the manual is gonna be needed for this one

Oh man, pity you're having such a hard time with it, PoP2 is such an awesome game. That first boss is a right bitch, as you said (even beating it completely on normal I got trunced playing again on hard) but once you grow on it a little it's great. The combat isn't it's strong point, the freedom of running the walls, flipping from poles and launching baddies from gigantic towers just rocks.

After a few days spent getting control of the...controls, (:hmm: ) I have to say, I'm liking it a bit better.

Actually, the combat is one of the reasons I keep playing it. The buttons are still a bit clunky, but at least the combos are starting to make sense a bit. Like I said, I really, really want to like the game. I like the freedom to run and do anything I want. I just wish the camera wasn't so damn irritating. And even that I could overlook, if the map was better (think...Splinter Cell 3 / Metroid Prime 2).

If you liked PoP2, you'll love the first Prince of Persia that come out. It's not as dark, but I believe it was much, much better when it comes to control and camera work. The only issue with the first one, I believe, was the legions of enemies you have to fight. It gets a bit repetative, but the puzzles are even better :D

Bacchanal 08-01-2005 03:36 PM

A friend of mine bought Flat Out, and I spent quite a bit of time playing and watching it last night. It has some really, really fun stuff to do. Throwing the driver from the car in the high jump is HILARIOUS! The races are pretty fun/tough as well. From just having played it last night, I'd buy it.

My personal opinion: 8/10

The combo system does take a while, very true. Once it clicks, though, you'll be splitting heads (literally) all over the place.

Finally bought GTA: San Andreas last night. I played for 4 hours and I think I'm 4.5% complete. (Unlike Fable, where 4 hours and I was over 50% complete).

Rockstar earns their $50 for sure!

tspikes51 08-02-2005 09:13 PM

I just got Doom 3 on PC today. I have to say that it is the best game I have played in a long time. The fluidity of the gameplay (like interacting with the computers and such) and that kind of stuff makes it absolutely immersive. The graphics are nothing short of breathtaking and scary as hell. My only complaint so far is that there seems to be a lack of selection when it comes to weapons.

I also played a demo of Half Life 2. I loved it. The physics were amazing, especially with the picker-upper gun that lets you throw stuff like sawblades, exploding barrels, and furniture at aliens.

Started KOTOR 2. So far so good.

I just reinstalled my desktop machine and the only game I felt compelled to install was WoW. I've been playing for a few months now, and have lost interest in other games.

RubenBaraja 08-21-2005 04:15 AM

Tried to get into Resident Evil (remake) for the Cube.

Is it just me or has the difficulty been cranked up a lot or am I just worse than I thought?

Excellent visuals though

I haven't played it myself, but I sat and rolled a few spliffs while my mate played it.

It looks better, but not much. I think the key improvements are in the new technologies and the map has borders marked on it.

I'm still happy with version 2. That game eats time like... some sort of great time eating thing.

Just been playing FATE. Its an RPG for the casual gamer by WildTangent (kill spyware). Fun, quick and easy and good for a few minutes play but in the end kind of empty and pointless. No story or satisfaction involved in making progress. Am waiting for either a new neverwinter nights or the new morrowind.

AVoiceOfReason 08-22-2005 06:12 AM

We bought a Gamecube about a year ago; before that, we had only the old Nintendo--the first one--and the PC. We've picked up about 15 games during the last year, my favorite of which NEED FOR SPEED UNDERGROUND and Tiger Woods' EA SPORTS golf game from 2003. The whole family has enjoyed ZELDA: WINDWAKER, and look forward to the next installment this fall.

Kubz18 08-22-2005 12:08 PM

I cant stop playing battlefield 2...
i just bought it last week and i seriously have been playing every waking minute(minus work and right now obviously)

i love the ranking system to unlock weapons and the teamwork...its very very addicting

so addicting that its had me stop playing madden on xbox....i love madden its probably one of my favorite games to buy and play each year and usually i play it all the time at least for the first month that i get it but battlefield has taken over......its sad

Lwang9276 08-22-2005 12:13 PM

Have you downloaded and played the NWN Premium modules? I have and they are great. Support Bioware man.

Last two months it's been a mix of:

Hitman II 7

And it's great walking through RE4 after the Tommy Gun is unlocked :D

Not just Bioware. Support alternative forms of game distribution. Otherwise you'll get big distributors dictating the content created by developers and publishers.

Cool game

GTA San Andreas on a PC.

OMG, sheer genius and then some. Sure I could be an idiot and mention a couple of bugs rather than appreciating the sheer gigantic scale of the map, the number of missions and vehicles. Kept me occupied for tens of hours and I can dip into it again and again. It looks fantastic as well.

It's shown me a side to the US that proves I must never live there :D
Now I know why some of the posters from the US are like they are :p

GTA San Andreas
9/10
Gets a bit boring killing people after, but a great game nonetheless

Half Life 2
11/10
Amazing game. Storyline was great, gameplay was fun, and eye candy. Deserves more than 10.

Halo 2
8/10
Could have been a better game, but nonetheless, took my breath away. Graphics were exceptional and gameplay was near perfect. Storyline was lacking though.

Battlefield 2
5/10
Don't know what the hype was all about. It was an average game.

Lego Star Wars
10/10
Probably one of the most fun games I've played so far.

World of Warcraft
9/10
Self-Explanitory.
