I still don't know what so many people liked about VII. Yes, it was a great game. But it paled next to VI for SNES. VI took six and a half years to produce, and the game shows it in every way. I've played it through a dozen times, and I'm sure I will, a dozen more.
When polygons were intoduced to console systems, the industry as a whole took on the mentality that graphics were trump to superior game play. VIII showed this, I still can't believe how atrocious the game play was. As for the new FFs, I'd have to say IX is my favourite. they got back to the their roots, and oh my god, the characters wear armour. This is unheard of in RPGs, oh wait... I could go on for hours. FF is a passion. : )

It's all about FF7. . .the others are great games, but *drools* I still play 7. . . and I think it's funny that nobody mentioned FFXI Granted that it's multiplayer but I'd have thought SOMEBODY would beat on it at least a little.

FF7 was amazing, but Kefka is just so badass. How can you not pick 3/6? I dunno, 3/6 and 4/2 were just so good. However after reading this thread I do think I need to play 7 again. I also think I need to get 3/6 for the PS so I can play that again too. I can't wait for the next FF.

From what I hear - and the reason I haven't gotten the PS re-releases - the PS versions of 6, etc are inferior to the SNES versions or emulated versions. Apparently there's lag time when going into battles and there are only FMVs for the beginning and end. Almost every review I've read has said to just emulate the games instead. Of course, I'd like to be shown that those reviews were wrong.

I heartily agree that tactics is my favorite, but its a spin on the final fantasy world just like 11 was. Thats why it doesn't follow in the number scheme (which 11 should not have done either).

SaGa
My favourite ff is not a ff game at all but a SaGa game. Final Fantasy Legends 2 (i think its called that in NA because of crazy naming convensions) on gameboy. It had horrendous dot pixel graphics but that game is the reason i play games to this day. That was the first game that i truely enjoyed from start to finish and even tho I will freely admit it hasn't aged gracefully (trying to playing now is a nightmare) it really had great customisation and a unique openess and was a generally well done game (except for the translation which was terrible).
That game to me is the pinacle from which all other games are judged, because it was the first game to ever make me 'feel' for the characters involved.
