MMORPG Issues
I'm keen on trying a new MMORPG. Currently I am enjoying EVE Online: The Second Genesis, but I'd like to know what else is out there.
Before I open my wallet though, I want to find out what technical issues and playability issues anyone has found with the RPGs they have played. Is there a fundamental problem with the leveling system in your RPG? Is there an issue with its economy or PVP? What are you able to do while playing alone or with a group, and have you found any other areas that your RPG is lacking in? With EVE, I have found that you cannot really get anywhere by yourself. You can, but it takes a great deal of time. With a corporation (group), you can ask your mates for help during missions (quests) or with currency or items. I live from paycheque to paycheque, so to speak. ![]() It is a PVP game, but it also doesn't run well with individuals who just want to play for fun (me). And that doesn't sit well with me because I seem to always be behind the eight ball. The others in my group haven't been playing much longer than I have, but they seem to have much more than me. Anyway, I ranted about the above in hopes that someone may use it as an example of what I'm looking for. What are your beefs about the MMORPGs that you play?

I'm really enjoying World Of Warcraft.
I've heard nothing but negative from Eve so don't judge them all based on one game ![]() Try this link. Many topics are of course covered in the forums. Should be able to find answers to all your questions. Good luck. http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/ |

Don't go to the WoW forums -- you'll never find a bigger group of flaming idiots.
I've played a ton of MMORPGs. I'll talk about World of Warcraft since it's the only one I'm playing at the moment. Leveling in WoW is really easy. It came out at the end of November and I already have a 39 priest and 39 warrior. I don't power level either. The game is based around quests, or missions that are completed for extra experience and money/items. The quest system has only one flaw: it makes you feel stupid for killing enemies without a quest. It gives you the sense of wasting your time even though you're not. PVP in WoW is really lacking. It's basically not even implemented yet. There is constant ganking on the PVP servers (I know, playing on a PVP server is asking for it) but there's no rewards for PVP at all. None. Zip. The only reason to kill another player is to make them have to run back to their corpse (wasting time). There are major plans of the PVP system in the future, but right now it's boring. The economy? Depends on which server you're on. Our server is the most populated server in all of WoW (30,000 players) and the economy is really strong. It's easy to make money and easy to find the items you want. You can "solo" in WoW as well. It's possible to go through the entire game solo (not many people do because some of the quests with uber rewards REQUIRE a group due to the difficulty of the area and enemies). If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. -Lasereth

Planetside is my game. I like it alot, its more of an FPS than RPG but whatever and it is put out my SOE.
My only problem with it is that the game can get laggy if your computer is not the best. Also the highest battle rank (level) you can get to is 23. I am on the Emerald server named Reav.

What exactly about EVE have you heard? (I'm curious, as maybe I can empathize) lasereth: As with all MMORPGs, they come under MAD LAG when tens or hundreds of players are in the same area... How is the lag in World of Warcraft? What happens, do you have portal spawns (as a friend mentioned Asheron's Call 2 where everyone gets shoved off to different parts of the world when lag happens there)? What happens to the graphics? Are there ways to turn down the graphic detail? Do you have the option of moving from PVP to non-PVP servers in WoW? Is there any other difference other than player-killing on PVP servers? Is there anything that you spend a ridiulous time doing, for no apparent reason that to waste time (For example, in EVE to get around you travel between star systems.. and the time it takes to travel can be a few minutes depending on how fast your ship travels)? las: You have a point: I am not going to read the forums, because they are obviously very bias in one direction or another.

WoW is a really good game IMO. I hated everquest one, but if you play on a RolePlaying server in WoW, the people are great, and really helpful, not to mention the economy is good.
The only place that really lags is Ironforge, AKA Ironlag. Its the dwarven city, and its where the Auctions for the Alliance take place. Still its a great game. |

Playing EQ2 at the mo. Bug - Just seems a little laggy.
Pretty goodm enjoying it loads. Nice and easy to get into, does not need much hard work to understand and enjoy but if you want to put the work in there it LOADS more to do (back story etc). Played EVE - Did not like it much, to math's bassed for my liking. To much Jumping from system to system and mining. Not enough combat (this was around 12 months ago). Not tried WoW (not out over here just yet, not sure if I will either). AC 1 was cool but a bit dated now, played it for around 4 years or more. Lots to do, really fun. AO and add ons - Hmm hard to say with this one. You get your arse kicked if you do not have all the best gear, which is very hard to get. Having to replace that gear every few levels is a pain as well. Planetside is great if you want a massive FPS with hudge battles but does get a little boring fighting over the smal island each time. |

Lasareth really summed up WoW very nicely. There are quests in abundance, but at later levels (40+) it is faster to just grind then to do quests to gain levels. But I'd recommend doing the quests. I power leveled my first character to 60 and I'm currently leveling my alt just by questing. It is so much more fun. But it's nice to have a 60 to fall back on in case I get ganked and corpse camped on my alt. I keep both in the same area at all times
![]() PvP is pointless at the moment but that is changing. Of all the MMO's I have tried, WoW is the best by far. --jaded

Many players complain of videolag and blame it on WoW's server because they don't know the difference. Videolag is when your actual computer slows down because your videocard or ram amount sucks. WoW does have a really odd way of drawing characters in the game that causes major hiccups in Ironforge, but the MASSIVE LAG!! everyone talks about in Ironforge is usually over 50% caused by the people complaining having shitty computers. My PC does hiccup when initially loading the characters in IF, but after that it runs fine. No other area of the world lags except the Horde auction house city, Orgrimmar. The same thing goes on there. So basically, you have to deal with lag in IF and Org but after that it doesn't exist. There are no lag portals that move you. The graphics do get choppy in Ironforge if your computer sucks, and yes, you can turn basically every known video feature to man down to low if you want. WoW specializes in time saving. Travelling doesn't take long at all, but it's not instant. The longest flight path is probably 5 or 6 minutes, and that's all the way across a continent. Right now, you can't switch servers at all, but Blizzard plans to allow a one-time-only server switch. PVP servers may be annoying at times, but trust me, it's better than playing on a non PVP server and being friends with the horde because you can't attack them. -Lasereth

![]() I'm not saying there is anything wrong with playing PvP. I have characters on two PvP servers that I made for the sake of playing and communicating with friends who decided to go PvP at launch. Just as a different perspective here, there are a couple things I've noticed about PvP servers. One thing that really stands out is the lack of maturity or intelligence in the public channels. Now don't take this as a general insult, I am NOT saying that everyone who plays on a PvP server is an annoying twit. I am instead saying that a visible majority of the people who constantly talk in open channels are annoying twits. There are plenty of dorks on the PvE servers too, but I've not found it necessary to filter out General chat on PvE like I do on PvP. Another major issue is the total lack of protection against being ganked by someone many levels higher than you. There is currently NO penalty for a level 60 deciding to run around and kill people 30+ levels below them. Currently there are a good number of bored level 60's running around doing just that. I'm sure there are some decent people out there who use PvP in the spirit it was intended, but they are vastly outnumbered by the griefers. During peak hours it can be virtually impossible to do quests or XP without being ganked on a regular basis by someone against which you have no defense. Once again, don't take me out of context here. I don't have anything against people who like PvP. I'm just saying that unless you pick up WoW specifically because you want to engage in PvP that you'd probably be happier playing on a PvE server and having the PvP aspect of the game be voluntary.

Ive been playing random MMORPGS (Mostly Textbased) for the better part of the last 7 years. Right now I'm addicted to DragonRealms (http://www.play.net/dr). IMHO, Its by far the best Textbased MMORPG that I have ever played. The community is awsome, and the RP oppitunities and sheer amount of actions you can preform are top notch. PvP is suported aslong as both players concent beforehand, If not then the offending player will become wanted within that provence. Its only downfall so far has been that the rate at which you gain experiance in specfic skils is directly related to your Intelegance Wisdome and Disciplin Stats. This is fine if you are play a character that you normaly would beef up these stats with (Like a mage or a cleric), but it seems to bring a bit of dificulty in later on with other professions if they neglect to advance these skills. Anyway, its got a 30day free trial thing happening at the moment so if you are interested in learning more, the best way would probably be to play it.
Hope this helps in some way! -Keist |

Either way, I'll take the large chance of being ganked by a 60 rather than seeing an annoying horde person and not being able to do anything about it. ![]() -Lasereth

World of Warcraft is going to be an amazing game in about 6months when the newness wears off, and most of the kids playing get sick of it.
They've got an amazing amount of content, and great gameply, but the people that you have to put up with during prime-time really take the fun out of the game. I think the key to having fun with any MMORPG is playing with people that you like. |

That being said, Simu's games have some of the best roleplayers out there, which, despite problems with gameplay and the company, kept me there for a lot longer than I would have stayed otherwise. I've made some great friends through Gemstone and had a variety of great, memorable experiences. Most of my friends left though, and playing the game for the game's sake was more frustrating than interesting or fun. I've found WoW to be a great time even when I have had no PC interaction. The world is immersive and the quest system allows for tangible rewards and a sense of accomplishment on a regular basis. PVP ganking is kind of weak right now, but it'll improve once I get out of Ashenvale (one of the most hotly contested areas in the game). Ironforge and Stormwind lag like hell for me, but I'm quite sure that's much more a function of my computer being subpar than it is anything to do with the servers. Hope that helps. |
