Don't go to the WoW forums -- you'll never find a bigger group of flaming idiots.
I've played a ton of MMORPGs. I'll talk about World of Warcraft since it's the only one I'm playing at the moment.
Leveling in WoW is really easy. It came out at the end of November and I already have a 39 priest and 39 warrior. I don't power level either.
The game is based around quests, or missions that are completed for extra experience and money/items. The quest system has only one flaw: it makes you feel stupid for killing enemies without a quest. It gives you the sense of wasting your time even though you're not.
PVP in WoW is really lacking. It's basically not even implemented yet. There is constant ganking on the PVP servers (I know, playing on a PVP server is asking for it) but there's no rewards for PVP at all. None. Zip. The only reason to kill another player is to make them have to run back to their corpse (wasting time). There are major plans of the PVP system in the future, but right now it's boring.
The economy? Depends on which server you're on. Our server is the most populated server in all of WoW (30,000 players) and the economy is really strong. It's easy to make money and easy to find the items you want.
You can "solo" in WoW as well. It's possible to go through the entire game solo (not many people do because some of the quests with uber rewards REQUIRE a group due to the difficulty of the area and enemies).
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
