is WoW addictive?
Im still wondering whether I should get WoW or not. Ive always enjoyed blizz games and Ive always gotten more than enough gameplay time for the money I spent on them. Thing is, school takes most of my time. I was thinking about picking it up for the holidays, but then, I dont know if Ill have time to play when school starts again.
Ive never played any sort of MMORPGs ever in my life. Some of my friends though were hooked on everquest a few years ago. Ive always wanted to join them, but never did cause of lack of time. Now, if this game really is better than everquest, I would expect it to be extremely addictive and all but Ive never heard anything on that matter. Everquest seems to be the only game which has received multiple different appelations like evercrack and neverest just to describe how incredibly addictive it is. Never heard any stories about mariages falling apart or people losing jobs (and even one who commited suicide...) over other games than everquest. Are they just not as addictive? Knowledge of those veteran MMORPGers wanted. |

I think Everquest being the first popular MMO became the microcosm to describe any MMO. All MMOs, IMO, are addictive. They are extremely fun, if you get into them, plus you see $15 on your credit card every month and you want to make the most of it. However, if you can supress your addictive nature and just play a little, WoW seems to be very friendly to the casual ~10 a week player. If you can only find less time (that's 40 hours a month) a game like Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind might be more up your alley as they are some what MMOish (Morrowind more then NWN but NWN has more unofficial add-on levels). I'm getting my WoW fix today and will get to play tomorrow, I'm feeling withdrawl symptoms since the open beta

well see it like this.. to me diablo 2 lod was the most addictive boring game created.. there are drops and loots in wow but nothing like diablo.. its group/solo based and max lvl is 60 but some items show a lvl of 65 so they will increase the lvls later..
you get exp for exploring the world also.. i.e. you gain 45exp for discovering *blah* good way to make friends.. and there are roleplaying servers where you talk in character so it can be enjoying.. just forget about stable play for the first month.. growing pains and all..

I wouldn't have as much fun in World of Warcraft if it wasn't for the large group of friends I'm playing with. WoW is an AWESOME game if you can bring your own group/guild to the game. It's still fun solo, but I suggest to join a guild fast.

For me, during CB, OB and ST and retail, the game has shown nowhere near the amount of addictiveness as EQ. I can actually stop playing the game. I don't feel like I'm at work or constantly "grinding" and that was a feeling that I hated about EQ. With EQ, I felt like every time I logged on, I was going to a full-time job. Because that was what it required to become successful in that game. Incredibly large amounts of hard work. In this game, you can actually have fun! Unlike EQ, WoW encourages going on quests to get hearty amounts of experience. I guess that's why there's 2000+ quests in the damn game. I never feel like I'm working in that game, and for me, that makes it incredibly fun.
Now, to answer your question properly. Is WoW addictive? In some ways yes, and in others, not entirely. I don't feel like I HAVE to play WoW all the time in order to get things done. But somehow I end up WANTING to play WoW all the time in order to just have fun. It's more fun, but less addictive than EQ.

I was involved in some areas of the beta, and I can agree with those who say that WoW is still a classic MMO addiction, but that it seems that I can come back to it as I want to and not feel like I have to grind it out all the time.
It's much more geared towards casual gaming than other MMOs, with various ways to make the grind pass easily, and different hooks into making soloing easier, whil still providing raid and party content for those who wish to dump a lot of time into it. It's more down to an issue of whether or not you think you're going to play it enough to make it worth $15 a month in extra funds. If you're going to, then you don't have to worry about anything. The fun and the community will take care of everything. |
