Def Jam: Fight for New York

I missed out on the first Def Jam, but after reading up on the sequel, I'm really excited about it.

I've been watching all the movies I could, and it looks really good. They've added online play, more arenas, fighting styles, and more open career mode.

Is anyone else excited about this game? It comes out in September on all three of the consoles.

Anyone else excited about this?

Here is IGN's preview of the game:

Quote:
August 10, 2004 - Last year's Def Jam Vendetta brought the worlds of hip hop and wrestling together with fantastic results. However, yearly updates of the same wrestling ring formula would have quickly grown stale. That's why grappling masters Aki and the folks at EA Canada decided to go beyond the ring and take the artists of Def Jam into the realm of bare-knuckle brawling. Famed hip hop artists including Slick Rick, Ludacris, and Flava Flav duke it out with a mixture of punches, kicks, and devastating grapples. The environments play an important role, as does your ability to bitch-slap your gangsta opponent at a moment's notice. Is Def Jam: Fight for NY gonna be better than the original? It's certainly looking that way.

Whether you create your own player or use one of the 65 playable characters, you'll have access to a bevy of moves and five glorious fighting styles (street fighting, kickboxing, martial arts, submission, and wrestling). This healthy mix of styles creates different strategies depending on the character. A submission fighter will want to get a submission hold on his opponent and try and injure a specific body part, while a street fighter will probably just want to grab a hammer from the crowd and brain the opposition.
Controls feel like those of a classic wrestler and should be easy for most gamers to pick up right off the bat. You can punch, kick, run, and grapple with the face buttons, while the triggers offer the ability to block or modify your attacks for more power. The simplistic controls don't translate into basic and repetitive moves. Thanks to complete interaction with the environments, you'll see lots of thrilling moves in just about every match. Slam Flava's mug into a wall, toss Joe Budden in front of an oncoming train, or let the surrounding crowd grab hold of Carmen Electra so you can beat her like it's Prom night all over again.

The environments offer some great variety and will factor into your attack plan. When fighting inside a circle of onlookers, you'll have to be a little wary. Get pushed into the crowd and they may throw you back into the ring, offbalance, or worse, they may grab hold of you so your opponent can lay down a beating. Fight in a circle of flames and, well, you better make sure you don't get burned. The 20 different environments all seem quite unique so that you'll probably never think "boy, more of the same crap." Instead, you'll have different dimensions to your arena with each match, different places to "sticky points" on walls and other surfaces from which to launch devastating moves, and even different attack options altogether, because some arenas offer weapons to wield against your opponent.

When fighting around a crowd, they'll sometimes offer up hammers, crowbars, bottles, and other dangerous objects, which you can pick up and use to club the opposition. There's nothing quite like taking a tire iron to Xzibit. Pimp this ride biotch! Okay, maybe that's just my own thing.

Along with the kicks, punches, grapples, wall slams, and bludgeonings, each character has a unique Blazin' move. These moves are earned once you've provided a sufficient beating to another fighter and fill your Blazin' meter. Once on fire, you can grapple an opponent and perform your special attack, which is a visual feast.

Of course, what's most important is that Def Jam: Fight for NY is fun. After all, if it's got great presentation but is a horrible creature to control, what's the point? Fear not, Fight for NY is a lot tighter than the first and the varied environments and match-types make for a much more enjoyable experience. Granted, this is from someone who didn't think the first Def Jam was all that great. If you're in the same boat as me, you may wanna take a closer look at Fight for NY as it's converted me into a definite supporter. And hey, if you loved the Def Jam Vendetta you're in for the same type of gameplay, but fitted into a much deeper game.

Though there are some fixes that still need to happen before the game ships in early September -- mainly camera and some fight tuning -- what I've seen of Fight for NY leaves me wanting more. It's hard to explain the magic that tingles through your fingers after running straight up a wall, landing behind an opponent and then slamming him into the brick. You just gotta experience it to earn the true sensation. But trust me, it is a delight.

We'll have more on Def Jam: Fight for NY every single day leading up to its release. Crazy, huh?
Preview can be found HERE.

I am, being a fan of hiphop.
I'm excited to see the roster grow into a huge list of great rappers and celebs.

I skipped out on the first one because it didn't come out on xbox, and although I have all of the big three systems right now, I've been trying to build my Xbox gaming collection.

Going to pick this one up for sure!

The game will NOT have online play, due to time constraints.

IGN has released it's review (written and video) of this game.

They gave it a 8.7 / 10.

As stated above, it isn't online.

I was really excited about this one, but with it being released the same week as Tiger Woods, I'm a little unsure about whether I am going to pick it up or not.

The written review can be read HERE, and the video review (for Insiders), can be viewed HERE.

If anyone picks this up, and has comments, a review, or feedback, please post it here!

Take care.

EDIT: A few notes.. In the video review, the reviewer says this game has a better story than Fable... Problems include the framerate dropping below 30 FPS to the point where it can be distracting... Camera angles are bad in some arenas, and there is no camera manipulation allowed... Those are the two big negatives, but overall the reviewer says it's a good game, with a great story, and has a nice feel and presentation.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but thought it would be worthwhile

Just started playing this and am well impressed. Wasnt really expecting much in the way of story too.

Any more opinions on this one? Has to be one of the best I have played this year. Looking at IGN there's gonna be a next gen version.

Shit, jim.
I got really into this game before I finally picked up GTA:SA, and I totally abandoned this game. I really liked it, but some of the missions are really hard.

Is that San Andreas that you refer to as being hard?

No, Def Jam. So maybe I should've typed "fights".

Like, I remember the fight versus Danny Terio(or however it's spelled). Maaaaan, it was hard.

Hmmm, I found the whole game quite easy.

The only one to give me trouble was Fat Joe as Crack.

I did pretty well throughout most of the game, but I got my ass kicked by Fat Joe, and Busta in the two on two match. Damn did I feel good once I finally got those two.

That one was a bit tricky - took me two attempts.

One of the probs with free for all fights is that you ofter end up attacking thin air. The CPU automatically switches your target and often ends up wrong.

Hmm, pretty crap job at explaining that one!

Yeah, the CPU doesn't lock you automatically onto the closest opponent (as in Urban Reign, for example), so even though that haymaker should've connect on Fat Joe's fat face, it didn't since you locked on Busta Rhymes, or some such shit.

Anyway, I love that game! Too bad we can't do the story mode with any of the rappers, but the "create-a-fighter" system was very well thought out. My best style combination is 1) Martial arts (Fat Joe is ridiculously easy to beat with this style's fast moves), followed by 2) Wrestling (combining good gapples with kung fu flavor is awesome), then 3) Submissions. With this combo, I increase all my attributes (upper body strength, lower body strength, toughness, health and - most importantly - speed) pretty evenly and get some sweet grapple moves, which can end fights quickly without relying on the environment too much.

My toughest fight is always the last FFA against Pockets, Warren G (or Lil' Flip) and the tattoo guy (I forget his name), who kept countering all my freakin' strikes! The fight against Fat Joe and Busta is a tough one, too, since Method Man (Ticaaaaall!) is all busted up. The best way to win is to go after Fat Joe first, since Busta will only focus on submissions against MM, which doesn't affect the latter's health bar too much. If you go against BR, then Fat Joe will smear MM against the ground in 10 sec flat.

I played DJ:Vendetta and it was awesome. It reminded me of the N64 wrestling games like WCW vs. NWO and Wrestlemania 2000, the ones with the THQ license. The grappling system was really awesome.

Ahh, I rented both Def Jams. NY is more of a fighting game than a wrestling game. It's a great mix of the genres. They're so many ways to KO someone. Wack'um with a bottle, slam'um into an SUV, double-team, or a simple haymaker to the jaw. My guy was Martial Arts, Kick Boxing, Submissions. Get them in a clinch, knee them 'til their health drops to the Danger zone, and go for a Blazin' move or break a leg. My little sister used Street Fighting and Kick Boxing. Don't tell her I said this, I think that combo works better than mine. It's hard to beat a clinch that leads to a haymaker, ending the match (and I taught her that!).

A little tip to unlock more fighters sooner, play free-for-alls and you'll get cash for defeating all 3 opponents. Cha-ching!

Another quick question:

I have completed story mode and now can only take part in the FFA fights. Is this worth it? Are there more fighters to unlock from here even with story mode at 100% complete?

The final FFA fights give you shitloads of development points you can use to max out your stats and, if you finish the game in hard mode, max out your blazin' moves, which gives you more awards and creates an almost unbeatable character to school your friends with. At this point (before the FFA matches), you should've unlocked all fighters and venues.

With the story mode completed, that's all that's left to do. That and buy some more bling and hats and tats and stuff. Or you can start over with a new character with different fighting styles. Have fun, kick ass, take names.
