Fight Night 2004
Anyone played this? I checked out the demo and it was by far the best boxing game to date. When is the PC release?

It's an EA Sports game, and it kicks major boootay!
I started a lightweight fighter with the "Create-a-Boxer" mode, and he looks just like me. You can change the size/color of any facial feature and choose different body types and adjust their sizes. I'm ranked 12th after battling up from around 50th(?), but now I'm getting my ass kicked by my next contender. I started playing by bobbing and weaving then counter-punching, and now it's come around to bite me in the ass. I need to learn how to block better, but I just can't get used to using the other analog (the right side one) to block. Highly recommend it to anyone interested.

I bought it for PS2 and created Manny Pacquiao (featherweight).
I am ranked around 12, and the fighters are starting to pose a real challenge. One recommendation I will strongly encourage is to try Control Scheme #3. It re-assigns punching to the face buttons and gives much more control over the punches you throw. I found the TotalControl punching to be clunky and hard to throw hooks (particulary low hooks) on a consistent basis. Control Scheme #3 fixed all that. The high ranked (poor) fighters can be mildly annoying as they tend to run around the ring a lot, but they are easy, and once you start raising in rank, the competetion level gets tougher appropriately. Also, you are able to create 10 created fighters.. And they are temporarily stored for Career play. So you can create 9 real fighters (Tyson, Foreman, Pacquiao, etc.) and then start your career. They will then be assigned random records and an appropriate rank, and you will be able to fight them instead of randomly created "scrubs." It's a nice feature, if you are willing to take time to create a few other real boxers prior to jumping into career mode. A user at another forum took the time to post a comprenhensive list of Created Fighters, than can be accessed HERE. In order to access the list, you just need to join the group (don't subscribe to email, no need), and "View Messages." The Created Fighters and their attributes will be listed there. Take care.

although the game is stacked with boxers, i kinda wished it had more recognizable names like grondar was talking about like pacquiao (manny and his brother alberto), butterbean, tyson, and the golden boy himself, oscar dela hoya!

What? An EA game not to be released for the PC? That will be a first.

The game just retired me.... Damn age limits.... My charater was pretty much maxed out (create-a-boxer) heavyweight who finished 3rd. Man, those title fits are hard as hell!
Great game, best boxing game to-date. (now, I need to get back to panadora tomorrow)

How's the online play for the PS2? Does it suffer from lag like other EA games? Is there finally an option to allow broadband users to only connect to other broadband users?
Online play is the only reason to get this on the PS2 instead of the Xbox for me.

yep, control scheme 3 is the one I use. I think the game is great.... I think next years game it will be much improved. They could have done great things with the AI. Like mold them to their real life fighting styles. Rather than 2, charge or run away.

It's a fun game. I like the way the tiredness plays into it... was playing with a friend, watched his blue level plummet and then I just went in swinging, knowing that any of his punches couldn't hurt.
Another good boxing game is Rocky. It's not as "realistic" as FN2K4, but the tournament feature is real nice if you're playing with a group. Did that once with about 6 other people.. that was hilarious fun. |

Wow, I finally picked up this game Saturday and it is the best realistic boxing game ever in my opinion. The graphics are just phenominal, the game plays greats, and the amount of control is insane. Just watching a replay where you duck one punch, lean away from another, and then deliver an uppercut that knocks your opponent up off his feet is incredible. Now imagine doing this in under 3 seconds.
I've never played a boxing game where actually strategy had to be used. In this game I actually need to use the footwork, protect the body, look for openings and ration my punches. And best of all, it's all done excellently. Hell, even against the worst guys, if you forget your strategy and just start swinging like crazy, you can find yourself getting knocked out. I can't imagine how they can improve in 2005, but I still can't wait.

This is my 2nd time through, I have been the champ now for several fights. There is really lots of techniques to use in this game. Lots of different aspects to master.
My only grip is that making money is a waste. They could of done so much more with this. I mean, ok lets spend 8million dollars on stupid intro music. Come on EA!

Isn't it a great feeling when you pull off a great rope-a-dope against a guy who should completely dominate you when he's ranked 5 spots higher and is rated higher than you across the board? Just waiting until halfway through that sixth round when he was at half stamina and our healths were about even. I was far behind on the scorecards, but I had full stamina. I just leaned away from one punch and it was like the flood gates opened. Uppercut, hook, hook, straight, I just kept on coming, it must have been a 9 or 10 punch combo and I was still hitting him as he was going down.
My one gripe is sometimes the computer can be a little cheap and parry shots it has no business parrying. Oh well, it just forces me to go over the top and just flatten the left side of their face with my right hook.

This game is amazing, I never knew you can change the controls to something normal. Now im kind of afraid of changing it, im just so used to having it the other way. Anyone ever get more than 57,000 on the combo dummy in training? I can't seem to get better than that.
By the way, at what level do you retire? I would like to know when its going to happen, my guy is ranked 24 now and he is 29. Last edited by Xiangsu; 06-11-2004 at 08:49 AM.. |

I've gotten to at least 70,000 once during the combo dummy training. I got lucky in having a nice run of combos like three jabs, two to the body, three jabs type of deal.
You retire when you reach 40. Kinda lame, but at least it's predictable. I have a heavyweight who has been the champ for like 6 years and is undefeated, the game has compensated by making every single contender maxed out in all stats and be very aggressive. So basically it's like fighting the same guy over and over. Except when one is 6'7", that's just a BITCH.
