Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow

Whoa.. I am usually pretty well informed when it comes to Xbox games, but this one snuck under my radar.

http://www.xbox.com/en-us/splinterce...andoratomorrow

It gives you Xbox Live Capability! You can play 4 Secret Agents against 4 "Terrorists" in CounterStrike type modes.

Not out until the end of this month, but I am waiting patiently for this!

Anyone else like the Splinter Cell Series?

Hell yeah! I have been practically counting down the days 'til Pandora Tomorrow comes out. Splinter Cell was one of the best games I've ever played; it's under-rated because of the difficulty. Those who can get past the initial difficulty will master it in a couple of days, then the fun really begins...

I'm tempted to boot it up and play through it again!

4 vs. 4 is gonna be crazy...imagine you sitting in a room, and all of a sudden the lights turn out and you get lit up like a Swedish Brothel

Too bad the network here doesn't support xbox live...

but yeah Splinter Cell is one of my favorite games and yes I'm going to buy Pandora Tomorrow as soon as it is released

Redjake, I hear you loud and clear! The Live games are gonna ROCK! Send one of your agents out to find the "terrorists" while the other 3 ambush them? Oh yeah... May just have to take a day off work when that bad boy gets released. Oh yeah, and the day Halo2 comes out as well.

I love the game. It's awesome once you get a hang of the controls you're able to do some interesting things that most games only dream about.

looking forward to the new one.

I haven't been able to find any definate info on whether the multiplayer extends to the PC Version. I know you'll be able to go online on the PS2 and X-box for sure but not the PC... this will be the deciding factor on whether I get this game for my X-box or PC... damn it, I'll probably buy it for both...

If you go to GameTrailers.com and download the bigger of the SC:PT clips you'll see Multiplayer in effect, fucking hell that's gotta be the coolest shit I have ever seen.

Oh yeah, I absolutely loved SC, a game that lived up to all it's hype then took it two steps further and delivered an even better game than what was expected. My pants grow moist in anticipation of SC:PT.

I _was_ looking forward to this.

Until I found out that they somehow managed to lower their standards enough to let Sony Ericsson sponser the game. Which means that ol' Sam now uses a Sony PDA for all his spy work. He's fucking using a mobile phone to talk with his boss.

I agree, this is stupid.
I REALLY hope that any mention of Sony/Ericsson is subtle, but I highly doubt it.
I wonder why such a sponsorship deal was made? They original sold really well, and this episode is expected to sell even better. Why need the extra cash? Is there no pride in their work anymore?

Edit: I will probably still get it though, depending on first-look reviews.

It's not so much a pride issue. Product placement in games is a trend that's really catching on these days - and you'll see a lot more of in the future. Heck, Alienware and DAOC just struck a deal that will put Alienware machines in the game. (Can't WAIT to see how they do that with any degree of subtlety!)

As games get more expensive to build, developers and publishers are looking for ways to spread the cost around while avoiding a price hike. I've got no problem seeing real world products in a game if it keeps prices low. Heck, it doesn't bother me in 24 or Alias on TV...

Oh god no! Sony Ericsson's cellphone is in the game?! My god! The story, the gameplay, the brilliant lighting effects, they all look like crap now!

If only they didn't put that cellphone in... life would be worth living again.
[/sarcasm]

Seriously, what's so bad about that? When you watch a Bond film do you cringe everytime Bond has a new car? Bad Boys II was loaded with Sony PP but it didn't effect the movie at all. PP bares no impact on the storyline and focus of a game, if the developers can get more money via sponsorship, great! Hopefully that money will be used to develop higher quality games.

Deflok, it's not that it affects the gameplay of the games. I'm just adversly opposed to game companies selling out. If it was in a minor way, like an NPC using it, sure, go ahead. But when it takes such a huge presence in the game is when it gets on my nerves. Especially when it's completely... and utterly... baffling in concept.

dude, who gives a shit no offense....but so what if he uses a sony phone? it's a videogame. it's not like they are gonna cram it down our throats. Sam isn't going to turn towards the screen and tell us to purchase a sony cell phone, then go back to slipping past enemies.

like the guy above said, did you cringe when james bond busted out his new BMW? did you cringe when he blatantly used his ultra cool cell phone? nope. because he's a spy guy, and they use brand name stuff every once in a while.

as for security reasons, how do you know he doesn't have encryption on the transmissions? for an agency that can afford to send spies across the world with ultra high tech gadgets, I think a little encryption on a cell phone will be no problem.

this isn't anywhere near a valid reason for not looking forward to the game

Yes I did.
It's good top bring up Bond, as that is the prime example of how I don't want PP in movies, games, soaps or wherever. I don't want to watch a movie or play a game that feels like a long commercial.

That said, most PP is subtle. A can of Coke here or a Pepsi machine there. Bond drives a BMW. But when Brand names get thrown across the screen like the recent Bond movies it becomes stupid.

I have NO OPPOSITION to subtle PP, and if that is the case wich Splinter Cell, I congratulate Ubi for getting another source of income, and I will buy the game.
I just hope that when Sam is looking at a security screen it's not (always) a Sony, or that he suddenly needs to use a copier that just happens to be a Xerox, and that the security camera he can shoot a cross the hall is not always portrayed as a Philips, and he doesn't use a Yamaha bike for transport, Pepsi can's as distraction, a mag lite (with Energizer batteries), and the new O'neill dark outfit. Because then it would be just like Bond.

There _is_ a difference between "PP" and "using real-world gadgets".

I am still looking forward to this game and I believe it will be great.

News flash: Just because you are in a videogame doesn't mean that advertisements and labels do not exist. You're gonna see a Pepsi machine, you're gonna see Energizer batteries, and you're gonna see Sony Cellphones. It's called real-life. And Sam Fisher plays a character in it.

Oh, give me a break! So now videogame characters can't use real-life equipment? Bar the gates, Sam Fisher is in town using a Walther PPK! What a fucking sell out! He should use a gun that doesn't exist instead!

Isn't using real life equipment more realistic? Unless Sam Fisher is like "use this Sony phone or I refuse to complete the mission" then I don't see the problem.

Besides, if it hurts you so much, why don't you just create a fucking mod "I Hate PP 1.0".

I doubt Sam is going to say "My new Sony Ericsson cellphone seems to be ringing, lucky it has a vibrate feature so that my enemies can't hear me lurking in the shadows. The phone is equiped with video conferencing and audio capture functions and with the caller display I can see that Lambert is calling me with a mission. The line is secured by Sony Ericsson new Triple 2048bit encryption so a spy like me can feel safe answering his phone."

In fact I bet the phone will only be used once or twice. Did any of you people throw up when Red Bull had billboards in Wipeout?

From Gamespot
Ubisoft announces that in addition to weapons, Sam Fisher's Pandora Tomorrow arsenal will include two Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

Ubisoft has today announced a product promotion deal with Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications that will see Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow players taking on terrorists not only with guns but with a P900 smart phone and a T637 camera phone. The latest Sony Ericsson models will be used by central character Sam Fisher not only to communicate with his superiors but also to switch weapons and photograph suspects. Presumably, given the nature of Fisher's occupation, the phones will also have an option to switch the ringtone to silent.

"The innovative technology featured in the P900 and the T637 made these the perfect devices to add to the intense realism in Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow," said Dewey Walsh, product marketing director for Sony Ericsson North America. "The Sony Ericsson P900 smart phone is the ultimate complement to help Sam Fisher complete his missions. With its combination of PDA, phone, and camera features, it combines the latest and greatest in mobile technology, outfitting our hero with everything needs to combat evil."

"The Tom Clancy Splinter Cell franchise has a strong history of product promotions that have really paid off--with the original game selling more than 5.2 million copies to date," said Jill Steinberg, Ubisoft's director of media and promotions. "More and more brands are beginning to realize that TV viewership is down and that reaching the male 18-to-34 demographic from all fronts can be achieved by teaming up with a video game publisher. We are pleased to have Sony Ericsson join our group of A-list partners for this unique opportunity."
Picture this:

Fisher parachutes into the enemy complex usign a top-secretly designed parachute to prevent radar detection. He lands, and it retracts automatically into his backpack. Using a laser cutting tool, he opens a vent and engages a sound dampener to prevent being heard. He spots his objective room, and shoots in two of his leet whistling gas bullets to disable the guards. Slipping into the room, he finds the file he's looking for.

He then takes a photo of it with a freaking camera phone.

My point is that it's not just an idle prop used in the game. It is being integrated as the essential tool for the game - on a much higher level than any James Bond PP has been, and AFAIK more than any other mainstream game.

Did you really read my post as a statement that the game may not use realistic equipment?
I'm sorry but I meant to say that phones are not only made by Sony, TV's are not JVC's invention and that Energizer has a few competitors on the market.

I think your point is valid. The game tries to be a realistic simulation of a behind enemy lines secret operative. And if he used out-of-this-world gadgetry it would look really stupid. But I do not think that all gadgets need to have a real-world brand stamped on them in order to be believable.

I do not condemn Ubi Soft if there is a Pepsi machine somewhere in the game, or he happens to use a phone that resembles Sony/Ericsson's. But if the game portrayes the phone as obvious as it says in the quoted statement above (which I don't think it will) I think it is too much.

Funny. If Sam had said "I just love my .44 Magnum and Hydrashock bullet's" I wouldn't have been as miffed. Or how about "Wow, these Winchester .308's really blew his head apart". But "Gee, Let me check my Sony/Ericsson phone for a message" just sounds ghey.

and he used a PDA in the first one to do the same thing. no one complained then. so why now? I know why. you're looking for flaws in the game, and this is all you could dig up. WHO CARES. Jesus! I mean who gives a shit!

If I were Sam, and I had to take quick pictures of something, I would use one of those camera phones. Easy to use, and it doubles as a communicator as well as a camera. How is using a phone camera different from using a "spy camera?" I'd say a phone with a camera in it is more inconspicous than an outright camera itself.

And for God's sake, he's not going to say "GEE LET ME CHECK MY SONY PHONE FOR A MESSAGE!" To say that is just naive.

I take Splinter Cell very seriously and get quite offended when people scrape up bullshit to ridicule it.

You know, it'd be fantastic if all of this product placement was realistic. Like, if the enemy uses Windows, they're easier to hack than if they use Linux. And if you have to steal or sabotage a car you better know which model has a electronic speed governor or GPS tracking system.

The companies wouldn't like that though, parading their real life deficiencies, encouraging legions of little punk crackerz and social engineers who go and create new mods based on their dubious knowledge.

But by God would it be realistic...

Redjake, I didn't bring it up to bash SC mindlessly. I loved the first game. I was looking forward to this one more than my next paycheck. But then they went and muffed it. A game so hyped up about realism including something so... rediculously out of context. Why would you use a phone to take a picture when you could use a miniature digital camera? Part of the reason I play games like this is to use all the cool gadgets, and a phone that my friend owns right now isn't the quasi-futuristic style I was looking forward to.

And he's not going to have the phone from the start. My money is that, when he gets it, there'll be a complete rundown of the phone's features. Whenever you go into the menu there'll be SONY right there. Blaring in the face of the gamer. I'm not too fond of Sony. There is far too much ineffective, annoying advertising on TV for me to really accept ineffective, annoying advertising in game.

If Sony has such a huge impact on the game, why the heck is the PS2 version coming out several months after the MICROSOFT, GAMEBOY ADVANCE and PC Verisons?

Splinter Cell is by far one of the most intense realistic political espionage games I have ever played, I'd go so far to say that's it's more realistic and intense than any film of the genre I've seen. I'm still anticipating this game like no other right now but am still confused as to which version to buy... X-box or PC... I'd be able to play the XB version on a 43" screen but I'm not into Live but SERIOUSLY want to play online... I may have to buy both, PC for MP, XB for SP. My pants are moist.

Well don't bring your personal opinions on something else into effect when you are talking about something completely different! Just because you hate Sony doesn't mean anything Sony does in a game is going to suck....I think you are blowing this whole thing out of proportion. I'm sure Sam will have a mother boat load of gadgets to work with, sans-advertisements

I've played through it a few times already, loving it!!!

The Jungle grass effects are fantastic (and so simple!)! The train mission was brilliant, especially the end sequence with the two helicopters and the part where you crawl underneath the train. You seriously need a 5.1 setup for this bad boy.

The levels are small slightly rewritten portions of the final levels so don't worry about them being too short, also, there'll be a multiplayer demo hitting the net on Monday.

As for the PP, is was glaringly obvious at first, then as I started playing the game I didn't even notice it, you only see it in the options menu when you hit ESC and even then your eyes aren't focusing on it. It's a fucking great game.

IGN has given 6 games out of 500 a 9.5 or above on XBox.

IGN has given 15 games out of 750 a 9.5 or above on PS2.

IGN has given 6 games out of 450 a 9.5 or above on Gamecube.

IGN rarely gives out a rating of 9.5 or higher. If it does get a 9.5 or higher (or a 9, if ya ask me) then it's a must-buy.
