Uru: Ages of Myst
Has anyone got this?
If so, what do you think? I'm a BIG myst fan and just want to know some general background info on the game. Myst: Exile I finished in a few days of play so yeah, I'm just not willing to pay some money on a game that's goin to be as short as that. What are the puzzles like hard, easy or mediocre? Anyways just some feed back would be good Thanks

I loved Myst and Riven and when I heard Myst III was coming I was giddy like you wouldn't believe. Ultimately I was let down, the game was far too easy and didn't feel like a Myst title, not to mention the story being cliched and weak (note: Brad Douriff, the 'bad-guy' in Myst III plays Grima Wormtongue in 'Lord of the Rings').
I downloaded and played the demo for Uru and am so far very impressed, I'm not too keen on being able to see the character you play as but the game does allow you to go into 1st Person Mode to stay true to the original formula. I doubt I'll play online seeing as how you gotta pay but the single player component will keep me satisfied. One last thing, Uru is NOT Myst 4, it's a Spin-off or sorts, Myst 4 is currently in development by Cyan and the Miller brothers with no input nor support from Ubi-Soft. |

I loved the first Myst, but never played any of the follow-ons. Then I read the reviews for Uru, and decided to pick it up. My early impression is not good. The control scheme sucks; movement with the mouse is difficult at best, the keyboard is not much better. Load times are poor (and I'm running a fast pc with plenty of memory). I almost hate to click on the jumps between ages just because I can't stand staring at a blank screen with a long load bar at the bottom, ugh!
Then there's the game play mechanics. Nothing worse than a pixel hunting adventure game. In Uru, it's usually obvious what you need to click on, but unless you're standing close enough to the object, the cursor gives you no indication that the object is click-able. For example, if you see a lever, you have to move right in front of it, then put the mouse over just the right part (the tip of the handle), and then the cursor changes from a small circle to a small circle with a dot in the middle. And what the heck are Yeesha pages for? I found one, but the documentation makes no mention of what they do. Anyway, the story is interesting, but like Myst, Uru (single player) is a very lonely place. The only other NPC I've met was just a holographic video at the beginning. The puzzles are on par with the first. Locals are bizarre. You can never die, and the pace is SLOW. So far, it seems to be nothing more than a 2004 version of the original. As I said at the start, I loved Myst, so I'll try to push through Uru, but after just completing XIII and Call Of Duty, this is about as sedate as it gets! |

You're right wondash, it is as sedate as it gets.. that's what I like about them.. Myst: Exile had a couple of endings where you were donked on the head. No biggy. I haven't yet finished riven because at the time.. I didn't have the patience for the puzzles.
And in Uru I cheated some of the way through.. well on the puzzles that were most confounding. But when you saw the answer it was like.. why didn't I think of that.. argh! lol. I haven't experienced any problems with the game being slow, did you update it when you got it? I changed the controls around to be similar to that of a FPS. And with the Yeesha pages.. you have to collect around 5-6 of them before you see any noticable changes (the personalise your 'age') There's a tonne of linking books throughout the game relating to parts of the story which make it a whole lot more interesting. In Uru you get to learn the background of the D'ni race and then eventually what happened to them. But if you are looking for a game with lots of action.. you won't find it here. More of a thinking, enjoy the scenery type game. Either way I thought it was a good game.. too bad I don't have the money to play online, otherwise I would

I haven't played Uru is quite some time now, not because it bores me but because it's a game that demands a lot of time from you. It's a beautifully rich and inviting game though, I thought it'd be best to take a break after completing an Age start to finish in one sitting.
