LAN Session Planning Problems
My friends and I are currently planning a LAN session, and we have discovered that our plans may have a problem. Many of the games that we used to rely on for our prior sessions have a player max of 16 set on them (AKA UT - Half Life / Team Fortress), however many of the newer games that we are looking at playing have huge boards and require many people (AKA Castle Wolfensein - Allied Assault).
The number of people currently interested seams to be around the number of 20, and possibly more. The delema currently is, do we put in a cap of the number of players we permit to participate so that the games with 16 player limits are still option to everyone or do we eliminate those games and use the larger games as our staple games for our session? Any oppinions / options would be greatly appriciated and if anyone has any experience with planning any such event and has some stories to tell, I'm all ears. Thanks in advance. Another thing, please do not critique the choice of games or make suggestions for other games that may or may not be better options. The games are not the problem here, the platform is. |

I'd say go ahead and do a combination of the two. I mean, not everyone's gonna wanna play all the time (it is a *social* event), and spectating can be fun too. Plus, you can set up some tournaments, maybe with teams of just a few people. So then you've got 6 or 8 people on the spot who put on a game for others to watch.

DUDE, sorry, it has been a long time since I've actually been up-to-date with cs/tfc, I don't know what steam is. I do know that we have (very long time ago) played tfc at one of our lan sessions and did not have any problems. Some more incite would be very nice....

A few weeks ago, a client called "Steam" was released. Its basically a program thats used to launch Half Life, and a few of the more popular mods, and will encompass all future valve games. Its a internet application, you MUST have a connection to play it. You can still play CS1.5 over the lan (you will always be able to do that) and im not sure about versions of tfc etc. But if you want to play 1.6, youll all need to be hooked up to the internet. I would also recommed Wolfenstein Enemy Territory for 20 ppl, its a kickass game at 10v10, especially at lans, cause everyone is yelling "Need ammo!" at each other, and its quite fun. |

Pick two games at the most. Lets face it: setting up games for people who dont have it installed is dull dull dull. You wanna play, not wait for a game to install. Pick the game that will allow more people. Or, get a demo version of something new like UT2003 or something. At least there are three or four maps and no other restrictions.
