EVA: Yeah.
Snake: So how’d he get to be their commander? He can’t be any older than 18 or 19. I can’t believe he’s already a major…
EVA: I heard from the Colonel that he’s been given…special treatment.
Snake: Special treatment?
EVA: Yeah. He’s the son of some legendary hero or something.
Snake: No wonder he seems to have the right stuff… So who is this legendary hero, anyway?
EVA: Beats me.
Snake: …
EVA: The Colonel never told me. All I heard was that his mother was supposedly shot in the gut during battle and that he was born right there, with bullets whizzing past them.
Snake: A pregnant woman in the middle of a battle?
EVA: That’s what I heard. They say that when they stitched her up, the scar was shaped like a snake.
Snake: Well, that’s battlefield medicine for you. What about his father, this legendary hero?
EVA: He didn’t tell me. I don’t think Ocelot’s ever met his parents.
Snake: Are they dead?
EVA: Maybe, I don’t know. There were a lot of MIAs back then, during the last days of the war. Ocelot probably would have ended up the same way. But he was taken in and raised by GRU and Volgin.
Snake: Because he was special?
EVA: That’s my guess.

This conversation is after the fight with ocelot when you in the cave.

So Ocelot is the son of.... Spoiler: The boss and The sorrow?

correct. Spoiler: Boss had a snake-shaped scar on her chest at the end of the game. that pretty much confirms it.

Anyone else surprised at the ending?

Spoiler: I mean the whole game we thought she had defected, yet in the end she was with the american government all along and was sent on a mission to quite frankly just die. I think the only good thing that came out of it was that she was able to rest instead of fighting on. also prevented a nuclear war too

Now I understand The Boss's "I didn't... I'm loyal to the "end". To my purpose" line.

Imagine having that much faith and belief in your Country that you would do that.. and knowing that in the end, nobody would ever know of your sacrifice and you would be marked as a traitor.

Quite possibly the saddest ending I've seen in a game.

I can see why Big Boss would go off the deep end.

I got a friend that got Hideo Kojima and Yoji Shinkawa (MGS art director, I think I spelt it right) to sign his copy of MGS2, MGS3, and a MGS3 poster today at Glendale Galleria at Planet X in Glendale, California. He wants to know if anyone would be interested in buying them from him possibly.

Here are some pictures:

If he really has to sell it, try eBay. But man, that's a personal autograph; a gift. I've sold a lot of autographs on eBay, but all of those I payed for by buying packs of basketball cards. I would NEVER sell the autographs that Andre Miller and Amare Stoudemire signed for me. I consider those gifts, and an insult to them if I pawned them off.

same for me...I spent around 40 hours total to beat the game.
who was the hardest of the bosses in your opinion?
here, I'd say..
1. The Boss (she took me the most tries)
2. The End (old lunatic fuckhead ended up walking right behind me as I was lying on my belly with the sniper equipped...and before snake can do anything he gives him one shot in the back...and carries him to the research lab nearby)...really, I think I spent more than three hours of a very stressful game of predator and prey...in the end I got really lucky. I used the directional microphone and heard he was really close, found him with the thermal goggles and whabam! headshott.
3. The sorrow...asshole had me do the river 4 times before I thought about using the revival pill.
The rest are pretty simple.

I just beat it for the first time to. makes me think i have the balls to play the first two MGS's on extreme mode sans RADAR...but then i remember that i don't have my badass CQC anymore if i go back...bottom line the game ruled...all the way through the end...yeah the voice acting was weak (i'm sure the japanese version looks and sounds better actingwise)...but it reminded me alot of why i got into the series in the first place...bad ass stealth action...and being able to scuffle if i had to. MGS2 didn't do that for me.
I agree with THE END being the hardest. I want to see if i can't get his camo it sounds like some fun...I'm also looking forward to playing through it again and getting EVERYTHING including all those stupid little frogs...thats the other great thing about all MGSs the replay factor...it's huge...well worth 50 dollars...can't wait til 4 comes out

BTW...is anyone any closer to finding out who the patriots are and what that la le li lo lu thing is? MGS2 left us with these questions and Kojima just reposed the questions (in a 60s backdrop)

Incredible game though...it'll make hours pass like minutes.

Can a gamer freak (who spends hours playing and knows everything MGS3 )tell us how to get all the special camos?
I found the Kabuki facepaint...what does it do? And the Geisha facepaint with the lipstick is hilarious on Snake.
I'm having a rough time controlling CQC really well...I often press O too hard and Snake slices the mofo's throat....I'm like "noooooo".
And I heard if you save the game while fighting The End and advance you PS2 clock a week he will die of old age...and you can shoot him a bit upon arriving at the warehouse when he's in his wheelchair.
I was so nervous when fighting The End...it just felt so intense an real.. The old fool was so unpredictable...running around and trying to off him with the shotty just doesnt cut it, you have to be super patient and cautious.
I think I'm too scared to try and get his camo...I don't know why, he's the only video game character that's ever inspired me fear. (The Fear, spider freak was a joke...Thermal Goggles...whabam, there's Kalashnikov power for you)
It's also fun to play with grenades and such. hides behind crates and throw the nade over...the poor soldiers can't figure out where it came from..
But Kojima did a great job at showing the horrors of war...and the way the soldier is used as a tool, who should forget his humanity for his country. When you see Volgin run over his men with the Shagohod, and they're helpless, it shows how powerless and meaninglesss they are to the govt..even if its them who fight the wars..
And with the sorrow, Kojima shows the reality, all the people you kill in order to complete the mission...
I was like "I killed 2 scientists?? Damn.."
Well all that made the game feel real.
And we still wonder why Big Boss becomes the bad guy in Metal Gear. I wanna know all this stuff; Kojima is really good at keeping us on the edges of our seats.

the whole soldier = tool thing is in ALL the metal gears...i think Kojima is trying to tell us something...or maybe just needs a new plot twist...he he he...the story line is STILL awesome...i like the way it shows that that son makes the same mistakes as the father...even if the son is a clone.

Yeah, I know Kojima shows us the wrongs of war and the dehumanization of the soldier in all his games, but the storyline was especially well written in this game..
The Boss turns out to be a martyr..
This is seriously the only series of video games that has characters that become really human.
kinda scary.

I think you're supposed to load the game you beat, and not start a new game. In MGS3, you can't change difficulties even if you beat the game unlike the previous MGS games. I think this is because so people wouldn't be able to start with all the camos and items obtained from normal, in extreme mode. So in order to have items for each difficulty, you must obtain it in each difficulty.

I mean, its sort of like the best game of 2004 in the opinions of many PS2 gamers.
You can't possibly honestly say this game is shit. If you do, then you truly can't appreciate good games..

I can appreciate good games, it's just that ever since I bought the PS2 I've been so frustrated trying to find games that I like. For the past 5 years I've been gaming purely on the computer, not on consoles, so coming back to a platform that doesn't let me configure my controls really bothers me. I guess thats a hardware limitation or something, so I don't blame the game for that.

As for the game itself, I have a few issues that probably only bother me..

1. The controls, obviously. I don't like having to hit the crouch button twice to make him stand up.
2. The point of views from the camera. Seems like the people are always just out of frame and it's a pain in the ass to have to switch to first person all the time just to check. Why can't it have an over the shoulder third person view like Tomb Raider?
3. Since when is it considered fun to apply healing oils and bandages in a game? If they were shooting for realism, maybe they shouldn't let me stop time in the middle of battle to do this.
4. There's a certain level of cheesyness that I've come to expect from Japanese game makers, but watching Ocelot "meow" to bring out his troops made me laugh my ass off since they want me to take the plot so seriously. And if they don't want me to kill him and cause a "time paradox" why leave his unconcious body in front of me? That's just bad story arranging there, like rail-roading me.
5. This is more of a movie than a game.

Needless to say I didn't finish the game so I can't make a final judgement on it. But it seems like this is an "emperor has no clothes" thing to me.

I've had this game since before Christmas, but hadn't got around to playing it until last night (been too caught up in GTA:SA). I only played for about4-5 hours, but got past The Fear, saved and turned it off.

From reading some of this thread I can not wait to get farther, and see the ending. I didn't like MGS2 very much, but loved the first one. So far, I think this is the best game that I've played in the series.

Well, yellowgowild (your avatar rocks btw)...The MGS series attracts its particular crowd (a rather large one nonetheless) who do enjoy taking the time to meticulously sneak past enemies...If it involves changing views so you can get a better sight of the area, and taking the time to switch from standing to crawl and standing positions and back so they can better blend in with the environment, it just makes the experience more believable..
Even if they can't make everything realistic...(such as the on-field healing), it still is to make it ressemble a survival game. I personally think it's cool you have to hunt for animals and cure yourself from diseases or wounds.
As for the characters... Ocelot in particular. He is the coolest.. Granted, the "Meaaow" isn't his best feature but that special Russian Roulette was badass. period.
And about those "time-paradoxes". what can I say? obviously ocelot doesn't die, so they can't put his dead body there. But they can't make him disappear either, him and his bunch of unconcious/dead soldiers aren't going to move themselves..
And since Ocelot appears later in the game story (MGS, MGS2), you can't kill him. Seems logical to me.
The story is so well done you can't even touch that. I learned more about the Cold War than I had before in History class. It carries such strong messages from master Hideo Kojima.. IMO..the best game of the MGS series, and best game of 2004.

Ugh, this game throws some cheap bullshit at you.. and I'm startin to not appreciate it.

For example, just fought Ocelot and this snake that has nothing to do with fuckin anything, bites me. I beat Ocelot, now I'm stuck in this cave fucking POISONED (w/ no Serum).

No stamina, which means I can't breathe underwater (well, I can get food from the snakes in the cave, but the stam still drops quickly). When my O2 runs out, the lil sliver of life I have left kills me instantly.

It should at least remove the shit if I die.. now I'm gonna have to either restart a new game or.. magically find a way out of here without dying.

Such BS. I hate when games pull this shit.

I remember FF8 had something that allowed you to save at a point where you could no longer go back into the actual game (Time Compression, I believe).. so once you were there, if you missed anything in the actual game.. had to start over. It sucked.. was stuck there w/ my guys totally not even built up or anything. As a result, couldn't beat it .. never started over after that.

I don't think this is as extreme, but still.. it shoulda cured me after that fight.

hehe, sorry to go off topic but when you wrote this about FF8 there is a way to build up your units once you are in this time area. There are three doors you can enter to explore small parts of the world BUT if you look hard enough you can find the air ship you were flying around in and go to just about anywhere in the world to level up hardcore and get all the magic you want.

Usually there is a way back but since my days of getting stuck playing Journeyman Project TURBO I always save in multiple slots.

I ended up gettin past the Cave.. had to fight The Pain without getting hit, which surprisingly wasn't all that hard since you just Grenade him to death.

Later found some Serum along the cave walls, hah.

Grrr... well, I'm glad I found it after a while, but still... was quite an annoying situation.

I usually save multiple slots if I can detect something like that coming up, but I was in a pickle even w/ the Ocelot fight where I had saved with a lack of ammo/health - took me a little while to beat him (again, couldn't really get hit due to small life I had left). Once it was over.. I thought, "FINALLY.." but then I saw I was poisoned, haha.. so that had me fuming.. and when I came up to The Pain, I thought, "...you GOTTA BE KIDDING ME. When does it end?!"

Ah well. Thankfully I didn't have to restart

I hope the story in this one is as twisted as MGS2. It took me a while to get into MGS2, but when the story started going into the whole bit about The Patriots, that's when it started to shine.

This is actually a pretty decent game. Thankfully I haven't hit any more of those "stuck with no resolution" scenarios

I'm at the part right now where you have to fight The End - kinda confused as to what exactly I need ta do to find him, but.. I'll get it eventually.

I like how the story is coming along too, finally talkin about the Metal Gear and whatnot

I've played the game about 3 times so far. I think it's the best in the series. One thing I don't like is how I have to create seperate saves for each seperate difficulty rather than just load an already beaten save and change the difficulty.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned and you've probably already beaten The End by now but for future reference. If you can manage to sneak up on him without sniping, after you shoot him he will run. Then you can just turn on the thermal goggles and follow his footprints and repeat for a relatively easy win. The directional mic also comes in handy.

But yeah, great game. I actually managed to beat the game in 3 hours with no kills and no alerts which earned me some infinite ammo face paint.

Ya, I ended up using the directional mic - but DAMN it took me forever. After a while, he'll just sneak up behind you and shoot you... then carry you off to that damn lab where you have to walk ALL THE WAY BACK. Grr. That happened about 3 times.

Another thing you can do to beat The End - save the game. Reboot your PS2 and turn the clock ahead a few years. Load up your game and he'll be dead of old age.

If you're quick enough, you can also pick him off pretty early in the game when they first wheel him out so you don't have to fight him later.

Pretty interesting!

Yeah, I heard about being able to beat him that way. I had my tv on G4 and they showed what happens if you clock it ahead. That has to be the least honorable victory ever, lol.
