Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution
Alright, I just recently purchased this game, and I'm enjoying it lot. It's probably the best 3D fighting game I've ever played, at least in my opinion. I've been a huge fan of the Virtua Fighter games though, ever since I got my Sega Saturn in 1995 that came with the original Virtua Fighter...
Has anybody else played this game? Who is your favorite fighter, and why are they your favorite? What's your favorite strategy to use while playing? My favorite character is definitely Lau... he's been my favorite since Virtua Fighter 2, when he actually started to become a unique character. In the original VF, he was kind of a "clone" character, he wasn't really any different than Pai. They were kind of like the Ryu and Ken of Virtua Fighter. But they started making their strengths and weaknesses more apparent, and he's definitely my favorite char. I've had to remaster him though, because he has a lot of new moves that weren't in the original VF4, and they've taken out a lot of moves that were in VF4. My favorite strategy with him is actually pretty easy to do... I do the forward-punch-punch double elbow attack, and when they're staggered, I rush in with forward-forward-punch+kick and he kind of does a double slapping attack, and it pushes them over to the side... then if I time it correctly, I can rush in and get a punch-punch-punch-kick (or down-kick for low attack) without them being able to recover... if I pull off the whole combo, it takes about 70% of their health I think, which makes it pretty devastating if you pull the whole thing off. Yeah, I love this game. |

I just got the game too, I like playing with the new character Brad Burns. My favourite strategy with him right now, is to use forward-forward-kick to kick the person up into the air, and then do a mini punch juggle for some easy damage.

i play as lei fei. i CANNOT play as anybody else. im kind of a 'controlled button masher'.. i dont go in with a strategy of any kind, i run on the fly. he has the easiest moves for my frantic strategy-switching to use. oh, and ya gotta love the krillin-esque bald head.

I got it last week via a free amazon gc. I think it's the one of the most overrated fighting games ever made. I don't understand why this game is so highly praised. Firstly the character designs are generic and uninspiring. They very little if no personality. The fighting is also uninspired and frankly not very exciting to excute or watch. It seems broken like there are delays between between moves and parries. There's not even dashing. WTF? This game is definitely going to some sucker on ebay.

I don't understand what you mean by no dashing. Tap forward forward, you dash forward. Tap back back, you dash back. I don't understand how this isn't dashing. If you tap forward forward and hold it down the second time, you run forward. It helps to try the training mode.
The character designs might seem generic to somebody jumping into the series at the fourth game, but to somebody who has played since the first game, most of the character designs are advanced versions of the first game, which is a huge improvement. The game is based off of realism, i.e. no huge flamboyant outfits or off the wall character designs. The character who practices karate, looks like somebody who would practice karate. The chinese martial artists are in chinese martial artists' uniforms. The fighting is also not "uninspired". The fighting is very inspired. It's inspired by *real martial arts*. There are no flaming fireballs of death, there are no random bursts of magical flame whenever you make contact with the enemy, the whole point of the game is realistic fighting. All of the fighting styles in the game are actual fighting styles. Saying that it is uninspired would be like like saying that Bruce Lee was uninspired when he created the concepts for Jeet Kune Do, or the shaolin monks were uninspired when they created shaolin kung fu. Realistic fighting isn't for everyone though. Soul Calibur 2's right around the corner. |

I meant running.
I played VF since VF2. So I'm not new to series. I actually enjoyed VF2 a lot back in the day. Anyway The characters have no personality or style. They're just the generic fighting characters. Simply boring. That's fine. I'll take fun unrealistic fighting games over boring simulation any day.

I agree that the VF characters have no personality, and little style, but I see the game as kind of like the Gran Turismo of fighting games. It's substance over flash.
Although all the accessories go a long way to making up for the initial lack of style in the characters, and add a lot of pokemon-esque replay value as you hunt down earrings and shit ![]() |
