I agree that the VF characters have no personality, and little style, but I see the game as kind of like the Gran Turismo of fighting games. It's substance over flash.
Although all the accessories go a long way to making up for the initial lack of style in the characters, and add a lot of pokemon-esque replay value as you hunt down earrings and shit
