It's settled: I'm buying Operation Flashpoint! Use this thread to appreciate the game

Recently I've fallen in love with America's Army and the gameplay of having to be smart, fast, and lethal. Thing is, I sometimes want more from the game, I think of games like Tribes and BF1942 where you can battle in vast feilds and hills with vehicles and am interested, but I want the game to have realistic combat. I've played OFP demo (both of them) and was not very impressed. The graphics were terrible, but what made it worse was that I couldn't read any of the text. I thought that maybe this was done for the demos, because no matter what it wasnt working. I did like driving vehicles and using the ironsights to pick people off.

So, waht does everyone think of OFP? are there any great mods for it? any memorable stories about the game you wqould like to share?

I'll give the demos a try once my new power supply shows up. I did have some pretty damn cool battles though. Just for fun, I packed all my soldiers into this truck and rode them straight down the hill into the enemy and watched them get slaughtered. It was hilarious. But the most fun part was running to the gas station in the wide open field trying to find cover from tanks and soliders. I'm pretty jazzed reading the reviews...I don't mind the blocky graphics, but I just want o be able o read the text in the game.

My computer is a AMD Athlon 1800, 512 ram, geforce4 440 mx (still not replaced). do you think it will run well?

OFP is a good game in some respects, irritating in others. The enemy AI is generally quite good, but on the other hand you tend to be subject to one-shot kills. This means that you reload a lot.

The graphics are pretty mediocre, and the missions can be frustrating (particularly since in one that I can remember, I wasn't really sure what the objective was). The sneak missions are very fun, as are the vehicle missions. All told, worth a play if you can get it for the right price.

I play Ghost Recon, Rogue Spear, Raven Shield and many other combat games.

Operation Flashpoint is the most realistic combat simulation game out there. The Mod community is full of creative map makers and mission designers. Some of them suck, but the majority surpass the original game designers expectations. I have over 2 gigs of new missions and weapon mods. They have made whole new worlds, vehicles and armies. BF1942 was inspired by the game play of Flashpoint. The game comes with a mission editor that is quite easy to use and you can create your own stuff.

The ability for the player to alter his approach to the missions goals is astounding. In one mission the objective was to place satchel charges to disrupt a convoy. Instead, I sniped the driver of the lead truck, got in the truck parked it across the road and caused the convoy to take a different route. They took a path where I had set up an mine ambush.

The graphics are not of the Unreal engine quality. This is because the size of the game world is huge. You can drive/walk/fly from one end of a continent in real time. I was lucky and only played the demo once or twice before I got the game. Don't let the demo turn you off. The game I have has been patched several times with most of the known issues addressed. The one shot kill only happens if its a head shot.

Im really looking forward to OPflash 2 thats coming out!!

I'm so used to the graphics of America's Army and the gameplay, but the graphics in OFP are still cool. The control is what I really like, the aiming system, and how it seems more like you're seeing what the soldier would really see, rather than being in some separate box with a gun avatar. The huge battlefields ROCK ASS (they really do!). I downloaded both demos last night, beat all the missions except the second one in the Resistance demo where I have to command people (mostly the difficulty is adjusting to the commander role and the directions that come with it). I still havent played it with the super AI on, I wonder how that competes. I will probably buy both OFP and its expansion later today. The demos themselves are amazing.

I think the one shot kill is cool, I don't die often and the death scenes are extremely cool. Its great how it focuses on your soldiers dead body with everyone still running around shooting and dying, then zooming to the guy that nailed you and watch him fall to the ground with a bloody face.

And oh man, its so fucking cool to see bodies fly in the air after being blown to fuck by tank.

The thing that reminded me of this game was seeing Ghost Recon on TV and the desire to play something akin to AA but outdoors. Then I remembered someone suggested the game to me, I played the demos, concluded they sucked, and went on. But I was itching to give it a shot again, so once my power supply got here, OFP found a home on my hard drive.

The ambush level in the OFP demo was really cool. Especially when the UAV showed up and I stole it to cruise around the battle field (which I later learned is not a good idea). I don't remember exactly what happened, but my UAV got really fucked up and my guys legs were severely damaged and could not be fully used. The extraction chopper at the beach was 600m in the distance. My platoon had completely left me behind for the chopper. I had no ammo for my rifle and one rocket for my LAW. Enemy soldiers kept running about while two BMPs scanned the area. It was very tense to crawl from bush to bush infront of these BMPs and knowing that if a soldier found me I would be dead. The time compression key is very useful for things like that. I made it and took off in the chopper, fulfilled in every sense with the battles I had just fought.

Also, in the patched games, am I still limited to one save per mission? That could become terribly annoying.

Butthead sounds like you had a good experience with the game.I 've had similar scenarios as well and they are quite the rush.

You can down load a operflash saver that allows you any number of saves and also a launcher that allows you to skip the start up splash screens and intro movies.I used to use the keyboard command but I've forgotten it (search under cheats its there)

Sorry, my book marks are a little screwy, but they workAlso I'd like to suggest the paintball maps because they can be extremely fun for DM in multiplayers

Is there anyway to change the default soldiers used in SP, MP, and Campaign missions? I don't like the original models and would prefer better looking replacements.

yup, hundreds of models! dont think you can change the ones in the original campaign.

but there are even more missions and campaigns using other soldiers out there on the net!

OFP is an awesome game. A google search will turn up ways around the save limitations which can save a lot of time repeating hard parts of a mission.

Sure it sucks when you take a bullet in the head, but its great fun to setup your rifle on a hill and take out a patrol before they can see you, or take of running when all you have is an M16 and that tank turns your way.

For me it is the perfect tradeoff between the mayhem of quake and unreal type shooters, and the sneakers like splinter cell that is far too frustrating for me to enjoy.

Few things in the gaming industry have inspired me more than the tremendous work put forth by the mod community in general. One for me is Flashpoint, which I bought in Europe months before they came out here in the states, and Falcon 4.

Anyhoo, the scripting language in Flashpoint is little short of incredible. One of my favorite missions/mods is the Chain of Command mod, which simulates commands of multiple squads and armored units.

As for modifying the game's internal 3d models, many people have been working on the Flashpoint 1985 forums to modify the config.bin file which largely governs sound, but can also be repointed towards replacing the stock weapons 3d files. I know the INQ weapon pack has a config.bin mod which replaces all the weapons (and optionally sounds) with higher detail models. Different mod groups are collaborating on a project to create an easier means to modify the config.bin files so things in the game can be swapped out or replace the stock models.

All in all, this game will never get old, even after Flashpoint 2 comes out at the end of 2004.

As mentioned earlier, watch out for being victim of one-shot, one-killed.

I liked OFP until as a sniper I shot a guy snuck around to the other side of the base while 5 guys came out looking for me. I waited expecting them to not find me. Well.... The 5 AI walk right up to me in my new location and they all stand around me waiting for me to move because I am camoflaged. It really broke the moment for me. I would probably like it since there is probably more online play available now. Its just the constant one shot kills they get on me and the always know exactly where I am AI controls that were annoying. But with this mention of big mod community now maybe ill break it back open.
