Left 4 Dead: Zombie apocalypse multiplayer co-op!
I know a few people are really looking forward to Left 4 Dead, the next major release from the legendary Valve (and Turtle Rock Studios--read: Counterstrike).
For those who haven't heard much yet, have a look at video below. Gameplay footage: If you preorder the game now (the release date is November 18), you get early access to the demo! I'm thinking of doing this because I'm dying to see how it is. I love multiplayer co-op games, and this one looks amazing! Has anyone played the demo yet? How is it? Is it good? Do you like it? OMG, what's it like?! :hyper: What do you guys think about this kind of gaming? I think it's going to be really engaging and rewarding. I hope to see more of this in the future. I like where Valve is going with this. |
Pre-ordered...
downloading... I trust Valve enough to buy a game before reviews. |
Yeah, thanks, man. I just gave into peer pressure.
I'm locked and (down)loading.... UPDATE: aberkok and I fired this up and gave it a go. Two thumbs up!:thumbsup: There's some amazing co-op gameplay here, and I highly recommend at least trying the demo when it gets a general release! It's the kind of gameplay that makes it impossible to survive unless you know how to work together. I think voice chat will be quite advantageous for this one. It's not all about firepower, it's about deciding when to use it. This isn't a game about shooting all willy-nilly until everything is dead. Doing that just might get you--and your fellow survivors--killed. I'm really excited about playing the demo more, and more for the release of the game. |
The demo is filled with awesomeness but it is two VERY short levels. Single player works well enough to be fun but multiplayer is definitely what it was made for.
I saw someone complain that is was just HL2 with zombies but I have played the first 2 levels about 30 times and I am still having fun. My biggest complaint would be that none of my friends on steam have preordered the game yet so I am stuck playing with a bunch of random kids. Then they run from the rooftop to the safehouse as fast as they can. I like taking my time and looking in every room of every building. |
OMG! I love games like this! I'm a huge Resident Evil fan and I can't wait for RE5! Do you know if this game will be available on Play Station 3 at anytime? My PC's are too out dated to play the new video games that are out today and I don't own an Xbox.
|
Sorry, SheDevil. I am pretty certain that Valve said they're not doing L4D on PS3.
|

Oh well, I have been planning on upgrading my PC's but it won't be anytime soon...maybe I'll get an alien ware like my friend has...??? I dunno... Thanks aberkok:) |
Am i going to be able to buy this at a store? i'm quite tempted to get this game, but i don't really feel like buying it over steam.

Do it, and make sure you're on the TFP Steam Friends group list. :) |
Quote:
I didn't know there was a TFP group... :orly: |
To everyone who reads this thread: If you want to fight off the zombie horde with fellow TFPers, be sure to join the group on Steam!
It's a public group. |
ok im game.. what is steam group and where do i sign up at? sorry all i know is wow. so im lacking on cool uber stuff that is way better than wow. heh
i played CoD most of the versions, DF: landwarrior and unreal tourney. played them all till i wore out 3 kbs and 5 mice heh oops welp i got the steam platform in.. getting the demo now.. just gotta figure out where you are all at on the steam platform now what voice program do you use? ive only used ventrilo most my time online in games. |
Okay, if you go into Steam, you should be able to search for groups. Just type in a search for "Tilted Forum Project." The alternative would be to post your Steam ID and one of us could invite you.
Voice is built-in. * * * * * Okay, after having played the (rather brief) demo a bit more, I'm really starting to like this game. Friendly fire is a huge issue. This is because of the nature of the zombie mobs which can come out of nowhere, and from any direction. Always check your fire! (It's actually quite funny to hear the voice sets in response to friendly fire. :)) It's all too easy to walk into someone's "firing solution," especially when in close quarters. Most of my friendly fire is now a result of one of my team moving around too much and getting in the way--as I'm already firing! Your positioning and thoughtful movements are key. This is going to take a while to get used to, but sometimes you just have to resort to melee or just standing there until you can get a clear shot. There is absolutely no way to turn off friendly fire, it's an integral part of the gameplay. I've taken to the habit of crouching when I'm in front so people can shoot over me. But this only works for so long, since the game is so dynamic. You never really know when or from where zombies will come at you. I've also taken to the habit of always looking behind us. This game will make you paranoid. :paranoid: |
Alright this game is awesome. I love how you have to play like a military unit in order to survive. Truly having covering fire, truly watching your shots, truly helping each other out in order to live. Plus it's so different every time you play. Unless it gets hosed for having a demo that is better than the actual game, I will be buying it.
|
I'd glad all that the video game industry saves all the good games until the middle of fall semester. Fuckers.
|
Anyone else have this pre-loaded and burning a hole in their hard drive? :hyper:
I keep trying imagine what the other maps will be like. I like what they've done with what we've seen in the city so far. They did a great job with the apocalyptic cityscape. Abandoned cars, torn-up apartments, collapsed stairwells in the subway system. Generally, the environment is set up well to allow for an anything-can-happen scenario where zombies can get at you from places you didn't know had gaping cracks or holes in them. They even come at you as they spill out from the rooftops. It's one of those games where it's hard to for your team to hunker-down defensively. There are no easy choke points and you always feel you should keep moving for fear of something nasty coming at you. There are no static spawn points, so you never know what will happen. I'm guessing the longer you take, the more worn down you'll get before you find the next safe room. But at the same time you can't move too quickly for fear of attracting too much attention too quickly. Why do I have this much to say when I've only played the demo? Plus it's a small demo at that. November 18th can't come too soon. |
Played the 360 demo last night and I had a blast. I don't think my PC can handle it otherwise I'd try it for PC too. Getting this from GameFly first to try it before I buy it.

This game...rocks....so...HARD!
I feel like I've had more fun with a videogame than I have in years! I will buy this for sure. |
Welcome to the fight for survival, my friend! Tomorrow is the day! :hyper:
* * * * * I've noticed they've just added a feature for making games based on Steam group, which means it will be easy for Steam TFP members to set things up. So for those of you getting this game, please be sure to join the Steam group "Tilted Forum Project." As much as it pains me to say this, I might not be on tomorrow night for the release because I have a book launch to go to. If I don't get home too late, I might jump on, so we'll see. Definitely Wednesday night after 9 or 10 some time. |
Glad to see I'm not the only one detonating the gas tanks when my friends walk by them in the final room of the demo!
|
I had to break my "no video games 'till the end of the semester" vow last night to play the demo.
|
Quote:
this game is actually somewhat difficult on expert. But aside from that setting, the game is too easy in my opinion. |
Ahh what fun. The game unlocked at midnight and I played until 4AM and had to get up at 7AM. I haven't done that for a while.
If you want to try something difficult and FUN, try the versus mode. Basically two teams (8 people) take turns playing each stage of a campaign... but you have 4 as survivors and 4 as the zombie bosses. Much fun to be had with this game. Oh and I LOVE the tank. |
I'm so jealous!
It pains me that I have an event tonight and can't play. I don't know if I'll get home at a reasonable hour to play it enough to satisfy me. If I stay up too late, I usually catch a cold, especially at this time of year. I heard about that versus mode, and I liked what I read. Is it true they make the zombie team cycle through the Tank to allow for even play? (It's the ultimate uber class, I'm sure.) Personally, I'm most looking forward to seeing the other maps. I'm also interested in how the reputation tracking is. (Yes, your fellow players will know about your bad friendly-fire habits....) |
Just to let you guys know, Circuit City has this for $39.99. I will be getting this today if anyone else wants to join me.
|
$39.99 for 360 or PC?
|
Well, I don't know about the 360, but I just got it for the PC for that price.
|
I played the demo over the weekend, and it is now disabled. I will be picking this up later in the week as it is a lot of fun. Seriously, a LOT of fun.

Man this looks like fun. Unfortunately I don't think my wife would let me play it :( I gave up video games a few years back and she is keeping me to it....
|
Ok, someone needs to let me know when everyone's getting together to play. I'm tired of playing with random scrubs. I've not gotten past part 3 or part 5 of No Mercy (expert), and I refuse to move on until I do.
|
Finally beat the Helipad on expert, jesus christ.
|
We played chapter 3, 4, and 5 of No Mercy on Advanced last night. We didn't beat part 5 (first time we even played 4 and 5). This game is freaking awesome and we haven't even moved on to the other 3 movies yet. We usually play on Expert but it's very difficult to beat with 2-3 people.
|
Lasereth, I had a similar first experience with No Mercy, on advanced. I left after we failed on the final battle, as it was getting late.
Last night I tried Death Toll. It was on expert but no one realized. We were getting slaughtered within 100 yards of the beginning. We switched it to normal but could barely get to the third map. What this tells me is you have to change your strategies with each map. The dynamics are so different that you can't rely on a small set of tactics. This basically means this game is freaking awesome. I'll think more about how we can get us all to play regularly. For now, I'd simply recommend always having your Steam logged-in when you're at your computer so we know you're online and at least there to respond to an invitation to play. Scheduling a date also works. |
My steam is logged on at all times. I am DOOMTRAIN.
|
They're just a bunch of zombies...what could go wrong?
Oh noes!
(Thanks to aberkok for the find.) *EDIT* This might be short notice, but aberkok and I will be playing L4D today at around 2:00 or 2:30 EST. |
That video is absolutely hilarious.
|
oh wow thank you for that rofl
|
Ha ha ha ha ha that video is hilarious.
|
Damn it took me almost a week to finish No Mercy's finale. We survived with 3 people left. The 4th only died because of friendly fire at point blank range. The 2 tanks were dominated in less than 5 seconds (expert).
|

|
4 automatic shotguns at point blank range. We were actually pretty lucky this time because he went stupid twice and didn't make it under the ramp where we were holding out. We shot him from below the ramp.
|
This game is brutal on Expert. I still haven't finished No Mercy because the last part is hell. So far I've finished No Mercy and Death Toll on Advanced. There's a nice trick to beating Death Toll's last part, and I wonder if it would work the same on Expert.

Woot, beat Dead Air last night on Advanced finally. We only had 3 people too. The AI doesn't really count because it really does some stupid shit sometimes, omg. All that's left is Blood Harvest and then on to Expert.
This game is too fun. |
Quote:
|
Beat Blood Harvest on Advanced but only 1 person made it out alive. I didn't get the achievement so I'm going to have to do it again. I really hope Valve keeps this game updated on both 360 and PC. I don't care if I have to pay for extra scenarios for the 360 as long as the price is fair.
|
Damn I wanted to try this out but it looks like the demo was only available for a few days. That is odd. I wanted to see if my laptop could handle the graphics.
Ohh well... |
Eso, supposedly there will be plenty of Valve created maps to come for both DLC and PC patches. The only difference between the two platforms, other than the obvious controller/keyboard/mouse thing, is that the PC allows for user made maps as well.
|

|
It was my understanding that they're free, as it's community-based mapping. You can download the SDK yourself and start building.
Left 4 Dead Map Database: Maps Dawn of the Dead, anyone? |
I'm pretty sure the Valve maps will be free for PC like they were with Team Fortress 2.
|
This game is just chuck full of potential. I can't wait for the player created maps to pop up.
When does everyone play? I joined the steam group, but I rarely see anyone playing. |
Lately I've been pretty busy. I usually only have barely 30 minutes to play. On top of that, my wireless router is a piece of shit sometimes, so I've been lagging really badly. I'm not really sure what the deal is with that yet, but after my finals, I'll probably be playing a lot.

Re: not playing lately.
I've been brain-dead because of work and some recent personal initiatives. But I imagine I will be returning to the game shortly; I've been thinking about it lately. |
I wonder if they will be adding more types of zombies and weapons. From watching videos it seems a bit limited on enemies. There are currently only 6 zombies: Boomer, Smoker, Hunter, Tank, Witch, and Zombie. They really need about 14 more types to make things really interesting.
|
One of my favorite things about this game is that, regardless of the number of types of zombies, everytime I play is a different experience. I think the idea of the zombie director was fantastic.
|
Did I mention Expert is fucking brutal? Was playing No Mercy last night and my group couldn't get past the sewers. We'd all be low on health or near dead and cue the Tank music. I eventually just had to call it a night because it was getting late. Regardless of how many times we died I still had a blast and can't wait to try it again.

Yeah, expert sewers is the hardest thing by far. I think I've only done it like twice. I can't imagine it on vs. It's just so long. By the time you actually get into the sewers, you're mostly dead. Then you have to deal with going through it with the constant waves of zombies and the inevitable witch. And, even though it's a really short distance from the exit to the hospital, it's still nearly impossible to get to the fucking hospital.
|
The toughest is one two of your players are crippled and slow and there are no health kits. NO! NOT THE GOD DAMN CAR ALARM...AAAAAHHH
|
It's amazing how I never get tired playing No Mercy over and over again on versus. The biggest thing this game is lacking for longevity is a traditional server browser window that is easy to get to. Too many times I have to return to the lobby because people left the survivors after getting owned, and the survivor AI is absolutely a death sentence in versus mode. Plus you can't choose things like server location. You get stuck with the dilema of having a 200 ping or leaving the current game.
|
Man, I'm tired of dealing with all the people using exploits in Versus. They'll take ways they aren't supposed to, and make the game less fun.
|
Anyone else already looking forward to new content?

I bought the game when Steam had their boxing day sale. :)
Started playing after new years, and damn it all am I addicted. I quickly beat the campaigns on normal, and am now trying to get all of the achievements. I'm having such a hard time killing the witch with one headshot. Yes I use the shotgun, yes I get really close to her, but I only manage to startle her, it sucks. If anyone wants to work on the achievements with me, send me a message, I'm "Teh Settie" and should be apart of the TFP group now. I usually work on the achievements in easy or normal. After I get them, I'll try advanced :) |
A dude in my group on 360 headshotted the Witch twice on Advanced. I still need to get that achievement. -_-

Oh, and I did.
I got some good vomits in on biznatch's team. :) |
so has anyone beat all the campaigns on expert yet?
I've beaten them all on advance, but fail every time on expert. This is most likely due to the fact that i only play with one other human. The bots are too stupid to be much help in expert mode :( |
I've beaten the first 3 on expert. I haven't attempted Blood Harvest yet. I've been waiting for my friend to join me, but he's been too busy to play.

I usually try to save the bots and it gets me killed which ruins everything. I guess i should try to be more of a jerk and see if we can get through it. |
I think that if you are going to do it with two people and two bots, you're biggest problem will come from the finales. I think they are doable, but nearly impossible with the tanks being the main problem. You're best bet would probably be to do the closet defense and run away when the tank comes. When I say run away, I mean set him on fire, turn around, and run as fast as you can. During the finales, you probably won't want to try and save the bots unless it's right at the finish of a wave of zombies just before the tank comes.
|
I am happy to say that tonight I beat Dead Air with my friends on Expert. We got to the finale of No Mercy on Expert, but two of them gave after a few attempts, damn Tank would destroy us. SO CLOSE! I hate No Mercy -_-
I'm definitely going to try the other two campaigns on expert, No Mercy is the hardest. I'm a little ticked because we beat it on expert, and when you beat your first campaign on expert, it is an achievement, and a portion of another achievement. The game didn't acknowledge those achievements. |
You don't just have to beat it you have to SURVIVE it. If you're dead at the end it doesn't count toward the achievements.
|
I wasn't dead at the end :( I did die once during the campaign, but I wasn't dead at the very end
|
This game is hilarious. Search for "DippyDan" on Steam and let's start playing!
|
Successfully completed Blood Harvest on expert tonight. :)
I'm so tired of these game glitches though. -server lobby's settings changed upon game load (ie - set up a versus game, end up playing campaign on hard? or vice versa) We set up an easy game today, it was on normal instead. -big achievement glitches: today I ran through death toll with three friends, looking to get the no barfing on by boomers achievement. one of them got barfed on halfway through, left, and came back a second later. we beat it, and THEY were the one to get the achievement! -Hunter pouncing glitch: only noticed this since the last update: if you're meleeing, you shouldn't get pounced on, but you can now. its beyond frustrating on expert. And makes no sense. |
Left 4 Dead on Steam $25 this weekend!
Thanks for talking up this game. I've been looking into buying it after hearing all your comments. This weekend, the game is only $25. I have to see if my DELL laptop can handle it (2 gig Intel CPU, 3 gig RAM, I'm not sure about the graphics card). I'm working on being up for 12 hours and walking all over god's creation today, so I will most more later, but I wanted to make sure that you knew about the 50% discount. I just saved you $25 on the game, would you consider donating $5 to the TFP? |
Last week I got all of the achievements
That's right, 51 achievements. Booyah. I play this game way too much. |
Some of those achievements are TERRIBLE . . . Ha.
Did you get any special prize/fanfare when you completed them all? Or just the self-satisfaction of a job well done? And when the hell are we going to get some new content?!?! |
Oh, man. I totally have to get back into this game. I only have a handful of achievements.
Don't even ask me about my TF2 achievements.... ...I'm such an underachiever. |
do you guys play this on a PC or an Xbox 360?
