Combat Arms: Free Online FPS

I did a search to see if anyone had posted this and didnt find one. CA is an online FPS with very impressive maps, weapons, and it's with other players online. The matches are set up into two teams with game sets of capture the flag, elimination, and others. This isn't an in depth approach like America's Army (which I couldnt get into). While it does have a ranking system in which you gain experience by playing, the set up is impressively quick. The best aspect about it is it's free. It would be cool to get a TFP clan going.

I tried it. It's pretty good for a free FPS. So far I've found the ak-47 is the best all round, scopes are well worth it. Extended clip is personal preference. Silencers I'm not sure about yet. I'm guessing it'll depend on play style. Anyone have any thoughts on it?

Ill have to try that next. I have used the extreme at both ends: M60 and an UZI. The M60 is to heavy to carry with to much of a kick causing a terrible level of inaccuracy. The UZI has a high rate of fire, but the level of damage is minimal. Both degrees you have to spit out alot of rounds which is hard against someone with an accurate weapon or just good with the mouse. Im also going to try the sniper approach. The weapons stats put those at the highest accuracy, but low rate of fire.

One of the biggest challenges for me is knowing who is who. If the the match leader designed the match with friendly fire off, it is a little easier. With it turned on however, by the time I have figured out what color arm band they are wearing Im shot in the head or blown up. Its either that or kill alot of my own team mates. Maybe it is a little too real in this regard.

I played for a little bit last night. It was not bad, but not great either. It played very much like CounterStrike did (and does), with the same relative movement speed, weapon types and "tactics." I've always been good at CS, so I picked up CA pretty quickly but I was very unimpressed with the lag compensation code. I've got high speed internet and my ping was very good, but things went to hell in a handbasket if anyone in the game started lagging. Laggers get an advantage in that their avatar jumps all over the place and the hitbox seems to follow them.

Netcode is the most important part of an online FPS for me, and I think that CA needs some major work. For one, avatars should never stutter when lag occurs. It should always be a smooth animation; see Halo3, Counter-Strike or even TF2 for an example of what I mean.

I'll keep playing and see if it grows on me.

I must say the graphics were phenomenal for a free game, and far more than I was expecting.

Yeah I agree. While I have played many FPS's I never played them online. For me playing against other humans is much more entertaining than AI. Mainly because I havent experienced it before (aside from Americas Army which I didnt like)

So a person could have the best video card, highest pc gear, high speed connection, but other players will still slow the whole match down?

I tried this game after seeing your post. So far, I suck at it, which is compounded by lag. If I can get better I wouldn't mind joining a clan.

Well for a couple of days I was wondering why I kept sucking at this game. My first thought is there are alot of good players the just excel at FPS. I like the game itself especially the maps, however I found out there are alot of people using CA Hacks that are punkbuster proof. Why some people get off playing like that I dont understand.

As someone who is accused of hacking nearly every time I play a FPS, I have to say thats a risky assertion. How did you "find out" about these CA Hacks that are PB proof? How do you know that the people you're playing against are actually using them?

I hate hackers as much as the next guy, but I have to admit that every time someone accuses me of hacking it's out of frustration or jealousy, since I'm not.

I'm still not terribly impressed with CA's netcode, and I prefer console FPS these days, since no one will accuse of me of hacking..

I didnt even know they exsisted and then I saw one person chatting about it in the lobby. So I googled it. The is a site called FPSCheats. CA happens to be one of the games their coders worked some hacks out in. Some of the hacks seem more of enhancements that perhaps the game should have anyway. An example is having the enemies name in red all the time instead of just when you point your gun. Most of the time if you dont have blazing fast reflexes its a matter of taking a chance to execute friendly fire or be shot. That is one of the weaknesses of the game. So having just that alone would give some the upper advantage, because you also see the name from any point on the map as well. This lets you continue to hunt down the same person if you choose. (You get bonuses if you kill the same person multiple times in a row).

The next one could be considered a hack or possibly an enhancement that you could buy through experience in the game, but it lights everyone up so you can see through walls.

It lifts the fog of war- cheat.

Gives you invisible armor that practically makes you indestructable- cheat.

Gives you money- cheat.

The worst feature of all that definatley is the king of cheats- an aimbot.

When I stood in front of more than one person and shot them point blank with a shotgun and it did no damage I thought something was not right. Thats happend on more than one occasion. These guys state their code is undetectable. If they cant get a handle on it then this game will eventually die out Im sure. Which would be a shame, for being free I think its great.
