Burnout series
Has anyone played a game in the Burnout series? I had played a couple of them at my friend's house, but never bothered to get a game myself. Well, this weekend, I picked up Burnout Dominator for the PS2 and I've been loving it. The series puts a great twist on racing games and makes it a blast to play.

I would personally say that the Burnout series are probably the only racing games I'll ever like. Hell, I'd go as so far as to say that they're racing games for people that hate racing games!

I'm a HUGE racing game fan. All types! I've played every Gran Turismo, 5 or 6 different Need For Speed games, wipeout, f-zero, ATV offroad fury games (all of them), etc. you get the point. Well guess what: Burnout 3: Takedown is my favorite of all time, seriously.
I've never had so much fun playing a racing game than Burnout 3 (for XBox). Gran Turismo and Need for Speed are great games, but the sheer fun factor of Burnout 3 is simply unrivalled. Let me get this straight: the game is 60 FPS, insane graphics, you are given boost for performing retardedly dangerous moves, the crazier you drive the faster you go, the power sliding is PERFECT, plus half the point of the entire game is to RAM your opponents off the road to win (which also makes you go faster), all while sliding in between oncoming traffic at 150 MPH? Sign me up. For the record, I signed up and played the game for hundreds of hours. Too bad Burnout 4: Revenge sucked dick by allowing you to ram traffic out of the way, basically ruining the best part of the entire series (the mind-numbingly fast, hand-shaking speed of zooming through traffic). |

Halx, you need to try Burnout 3 - it's the best racing game in the history of racing games, just like Lasereth said. So perfectly balanced. Such amazing graphics when it came out. Perfect gameplay. Absolutely perfect.......

I love Burnout for the major reason anyone loves burnout, you can take absoloutly any corner, in absoloutly any vehicle with the proper application of the handbrake.
U-bend, no probs, hit the handbrake, swing the back around then push go. Two-U bends, even better, powerslide it. However, because i am nintendo, i have only had the oppertunity to purchase 1&2 then the *censored* people at the developer decided not to use nintendo again, so i have only been able to play smatterings of burnout 3. Sucks. I will agree with Redjake though, number 3 does seem to be the best, plenty of racing with a liberal amount of FU! carnagerising.

Yes, Burnout 3:Takedown is the best! I still fire up the Xbox to play it from time to time when I have just a few minutes to play something fun.
I agree with Las, it's well balanced and my favorite by far of all the racing games I've played. I do have to admit GT:4 was lost to me. NFS is nice, but when I'm playing any other game I can't get those takedowns I get just as frustrated as walking down the street after going to the stripclub wondering why aren't the girls just taking their clothes off? damn, now i have to go home and play it...

I used to be all about need for speed, back when need for speed was about exotics.
but once nfs turned into a "how ghetto can we get" contest, i moved over to burnout 2. which was incredibly fun. then they added takedowns. i now play burnout: legends on my PSP and it's a blast. definitely the most fun racing game i've played since need for speed 2. |

HALX: the problem with the burnout serie is that it was good for 1 and then great for 2 and awesome for 3. 4 didn't bring much new to the party and then 5 or as they call it dominator actually took some features OUT!. so if you can find 3 or 4, then you should definitely give it a go! i haven't tried 5 because the fun part was the diversity of the styles of gameplay.
if you haven't tried the others, you're missing out on the crash mode. it was 50% of the game. Imagine playing pool with your car: you take off and try to hit cars or special items and cause the BIGGEST crash possible in terms of $. once you hit something, the crash starts and then you can't control the car except for the slowmotion mode where you can guide it just a bit. so the fun is really in finding how much dammage you can put for 1 intersection. Some of them are simple but others have 2 or 3 freeways and bridges over another so you have to crash, fall off and hit the next one, then use your nitro to explode again to fall on the other bridge. it's quite awesome. I hope I gave you enough info. 3 has bonus multipliers in the crash mode but in 4, they give you a different style so theres no bonus but i find it more fun. most people will say 3 is the best because they played it before 4, but if you want to try the crash modes, then go for 4. it will feel more fresh. enjoy!

3 isn't the best because I played it before 4, 3 is the best because 4 allowed you to ram oncoming traffic out of the way which literally ruined the entire game. Burnout 3 = incredible suspense, burnout 4 = plowing the road with a dumptruck.

I remember the first mission you get the formula one car in burnout 3 - I made it the whole race without crashing once. One big adrenalin rush from go to woah, I was shaking by the end of it!

I don't know about the other versions, but B3:Takedown also had what I called "The Insurance Adjuster's Nightmare" mode, where you have to crash through an intersection and cause as much damage as possible initially. The oncoming traffic continues and creates yet more carnage. You get rated by dollars of how much total damage you get, along with bonus multipliers from your collision and sliding into bonus targets.
totally addicting and mind numbing.

I only played Burnout: Revenge and it was tons of fun. That mode you're talking about Cynthetiq is definitely fun, haha.
Edit: They're making another Burnout for PS3/360 that's due out pretty soon, looks great.

I agree with Lasereth. I liked part 3 better because you were on the edge of wrecking 100% of the time. In Part 4, being able to just ram a car going to same direction as you really took out a lot of that "on the edge" feeling. The game felt really easy after having already mastered driving in the previous game.

Wow! I thought everyone was gonna be like "get a real racing game."
Burnout is so much fun. Me and my cousin used to stay up entire nights completing the games. B3 is awesome, IMO. I don't care how unrealistic these games are, playing split screen with a buddy is amazing. The games also have online play, from number 3 onwards I think.

'twas in Takedown mode, and I am RUTHLESS You gotta find a track that doesn't end until you die; in other words, a "lap" track, where you continually do laps until you are dead - rather than a circuit track, where there is a start and finish It's still not easy, though! I am proud of my high score. This game and SSX Tricky I consider myself a living god at.
